I've been researching planer fishing for the past 2 weeks in preparation for a vacation to Marathon. This is easily the best planer bridle video I've seen. Great timing, and thanks for sharing 👍
Stephen I have a planer video too I made two years ago. Go check it out. There's a part one and a part two. Good luck in marathon. Also if you don't know boat ramps in marathon as of April 1 will coast you 70.00 at public ramps
Hi Heath, More ingenuity from the pro. That looks like a great idea. You always come up with great tricks to make fishing easier and better. Hope you didn't have any hurricane damage. We're all good up here. The eye of the hurricane came buy about 20 miles west of us. We had some wind and rain but nothing to cause any problems. Say "Hi" to the crew for me. Take care and good luck, Mickey
Hi Mickey... no hurricane damage. I feel for the west coast though. Had to bring my daughter back to UCF in Orlando today, class resumes Tuesday. Other than thing are good, never a dull moment. Ready to get back out on the water. Hope Florida is treaattou well. Talk to you later.
Great video Heath. I've been wanting to set this up and you just gave me more knowledge to " get into the bite"! Hope all is well with you and your family.
Thanks Matt. Everything is good here, never a dull moment. Your rod might have guides that will accept the heavy swivels. True value has Everything you need, that's where I went. You have to ask for the double sided swivels, they have them already made. Take care.
Great to have you back! I think I heard that the planer is easier to remove if the bridle is long enough to remove the planer without tension on the mainline?
Hi Heath, good method and simple. I have been trying to find a source for those same double swivels, but no good on my end. Any idea who makes them so I can find online?
I found this link riteangler.com/products/cigar-snap-swivel-2-pack You'll have to cut one end. Only use the 300 lb... that'll withstand the pressure of the planer
Nice set up. I have been doing this for a while. You can also do the same with 200lb braid for your bridle. Goes well through guide and I like using this as it’s easier to tie on the fly. Nice video.
Thanks a million. Yes it's an oceanic white tip. Ran across it in 800 ft about 11 miles off Boca Raton FL. Here's the link to the video it came from: th-cam.com/video/cZUfEAHgCHM/w-d-xo.html The shark is at 12:04
Thanks for your help on this. Went out and set planner as described. Did not notice that I had a possible strick. Upon pulling in the line....the planner was gone. What did I do wrong.....?
Hi Heath Is it possible to bend the planer a bit to steer the planer out to the side away from the motor? I do this with downriver weights and thought it may work for planers too. I’m thinking in particular the method using the planer for constant depth and send double swivels down the planer line as releases. This would allow high speed planer fishing without the need for a bridle. Thanks for a great subscription.
Not sure if that would work... honestly never thought about, used to planers being towed straight out the back. The alternate method you're referring to does exist... tying the planer off on a cleat and sending your line down on a swivel attached by a breakaway rubber band. Good luck and be safe out there
@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing I fish in the gulf. Using that method I have heard a #6? Would get me down 40’ with 100’ of line sent out with the planer. Does that sound right? Do you use a #6 planer? Which do you prefer? Thank you
#6 is my favorite most used size planer. I've had the most success with it. It dives down 60' at 5 knots. I also use a #3... but i like the 6 better, gets more results
Bought a used Penn international 30 on a 7’ Fenwick custom rod yesterday spooled with 50 pound mono. I was wondering if you think 50 pound is too much and if I should get it spooled with 30 pound mono. I plan to troll Rapala XRaps and the sea witch skirts with Bonita strips you have shown. I wasn’t sure if the lures would have good action with the 50 pound. How would you set this reel up Heath for trolling Kings, possible grouper, Bonita etc? Good to go or change it up? I think the individual was seeking wahoo with existing setup. Thank you for all the advice.
@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing The sleeves I see are rectangular with a slot that has room enough for double the leader diameter. Are the momoi sleeves different? I’ve been crimping a sleeve that looks like a rectangle with a dimple groove in the center. I take you use momoi sleeves that start round? Oval? Oval seems like a much better stream lined crimp.
Not necessarily. I fish with a buddy sometimes who doesn't cut off the snaps... He clips the top one shut, because he's lost a few .. me personally, I pinch the swivel a little tighter closed
@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing Ok. I may leave one end shut. And BTW, thanks for all the great tips and tricks. I just moved to North Palm Beach and began fishing offshore out of the Lake Worth Inlet. I have caught Mutton Snapper, Yellow tail, Kingfish, Bonita and a huge sail fish using your rigs. And you're right about the 1/2 oz Spro White Jig. I've caught fish (Bonita and Spanish Makerel) casting it into bait balls and trolling. Thanks again!!

@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing I got the crimps and heavy duty leader mono. Is it better that the bridle be slightly longer than the planer rig, or that the planer be slightly longer than the bridle?
@@stevenpaulin448 you'll want the planer a little long... just make sure you try it out and when the bridle is extended that the planer is in the tripped position
Question for you. If you decide not to use your planers and just troll plug or feather, is it ok to keep the bridle in or is it just best to use this rod for planers only?

Awesome simple bridal for the planer! Thank you for making this video!
Thank you for the teaching .. I’m new trolling fisherman, you just solved a bit of a problem I had been having!! Cheers!!

Yes... it's not an exact science, but there is a threshold where it can either be too long or too short
Thank you sir. Very good info

Great job thanks
WIll the braid cut through the mono bridle (Big strike)?
Haven't experienced that. It's a solid setup for rods with smaller guides. I've used this setup for a while without failures
What is the biggest and smallest planer you use while fishing? Awesome video thanks for any advice and tips
Smallest is a 4-6 and the largest is an 8

Thanks I just bought a #3. This helps heaps. Why do you have 100ft of leader?
You need a long leader otherwise the planer will spook the fish from biting..
G day Heath, just made my first 👍 how ya reckon you go if you are on your own, disconnecting the planer when you have a fish on?
I do it all the time. Gotta place the rod in a rod holder, remove the planer and start winding.
@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing thankyou 👍

Hard to say what happened. Is it possible you put the planer on backwards?
Awesome
Genius!
thank you
Do the swivels ever fall out of the bridle since you’re not using the lock on them??
Never... they face opposite directions... the beauty of physics 😁... thanks for asking a great question
Heath, check cabala's Billfisher stainless steal ball bearing double snap swivel. bbdss5-3PK is a pack of 3 rated 200#.

Have you ever had an issue with the main line being it's braid cutting through your bridal I would be really scared of that.
Not yet
i see everything i need except how you are closing the swivel end that is cut off.
The swivel just clips closed with a little bend called a coast lock. It's one of the strongest types of swwivels you can find.
