    Everybody calling Black Panther "the first black superhero movie" seems to have selective amnesia when it comes to the Blade trilogy, Spawn, Steel, Catwoman, and if you want to include them, Meteor Man and Blankman. When Spawn came out, we were excited because it was a movie with SPAWN, not because he was a black character. That just didn't seem important to anyone in 1997.

      Behind the Scenes Photos Most people knew Black panther wasn't the first black super hero to appear on screen. He was indeed the first to appear in mainstream comics

    • @behindthescenesphotos5133
      @behindthescenesphotos5133 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      True, the claim is most likely only from people who are new to superhero movies, though they should have heard of some of the earlier ones (I forgot Hancock in my initial post) since the Blade movies were a big deal at the time and Catwoman and Steel have reputations that keep them from becoming too obscure. The marketing and articles making Black Panther's race such a big issue is where the confusion seems to come from; which made the movie sound more groundbreaking than it was, and leading some to assume it was the "first black superhero movie" when it was really just the first solo movie for a black hero in the MCU continuity.

      I think the point people were actually making is that Black Panther was the first massive budget and tent pole black super hero movie aimed at general audiences. Also the first with a largely black creative team and staff behind it. Basically the whole production team - Director, writer, etc. Important to remember is that Blade was made for older audiences Black Panther was made for a much wider audience that included kids/ so this was the first large, wide market and accessible black super hero movie

    • @Ma121Hunter
      @Ma121Hunter 6 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      I mean, yea, Snipes is a great actor, but I think you're giving him a bit too much credit, yea, he starred and even helped produce the movie, however, he wasn't there alone. There were 4 other producers along side of him. And he certainly didn't write the film, that was done by Goyer.
      Can't argue too much about the studio meddling though, that pretty much always ends badly.

      Blade is by no means a hero. At best he is anti-hero or a vigilante. He just wants to wipe out out vampires and could care less about who they kill. He is in many ways similar to the Punisher.

    • @senja572
      @senja572 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      And killing vampires is anti-heroic, but killing some aliens is heroic?

    • @impofstpete727
      @impofstpete727 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      An anti-hero is not about what they do but instead the why. Blade, Punisher, Ghost Rider, and Daredevil are excellent examples of anti-heroes. They are all about their own motives; be it vengeance, personal vendettas, or just a rampant urge to punish. A hero protects, saves, and looks to set the scales of justice to balance. Luke Cage, Black Panther, Captain America, and Spiderman are excellent hero examples. They grow and change too. Deadpool even starts as an anti-hero. It's not about doing good, it was for money or because he loves killing.

    I can’t believe people haven’t figured out David s Goyer was the problem. The more control he got over the franchise the worse it got, & everything Wesley complained about was what people hated about blade Trinity. David s Goyer wasn’t even a producer on the first movie, but jumped to being an executive producer for blade 2. I also think his role in the Dark Knight trilogy was PURPOSELY overstated, because compare his writing credits to Christopher Nolan pre Batman begins, & it looks strange. Christopher Nolan is credited as a producer of Man of Steel & batman vs Superman, but I don’t think he actually had anything to do with those movies. I think him being credited on those movies was just an apology for being forced to share writing credits with David s Goyer.

    • @kingvince7328
      @kingvince7328 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Blake Williams David may have been a problem but saying Wesley wasn't is just wrong. He wouldn't open his fucking eyes for Christ sake and didn't want to work alongside Ryan Reynolds. Talk about a douche bag.

    • @matohibiki
      @matohibiki 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Maverick Shaq
      You DO understand that the actors are directed by directors, yes? That (aside from Snipes not doing what he was asked to do) their performance is based on what they're told to do, and work from there. Of course, they do many, many takes of the same scenes, over and over again, and the editors /director decide which takes to use in the end.
      Basically, your beef isn't with Reynolds, it's with the director and editors.
      Now Jessica Biel, on the other hand, is a terrible actress.

    In Wesley’s defense, BLADE TRINITY was just a horrible film. Guillermo Del Toro directed an excellent BLADE 2... they should have brought him back. And I’m sorry, he has a point... the first 2 BLADE films had a more diverse and multiethnic cast. And the chemistry between the actors was more believable.

    • @fcon8507
      @fcon8507 6 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Yeah, plus as a fan of the source material, Trinity went completely off the deep end. Yeah, the first Blade took some liberties, but it was a great, well acted film so it totally earned a pass. Blade 2 had almost zero connection to the comics, but it was once again well directed, well acted, and chose to embrace the mythos the first film created (which actually worked). Theeeeen along comes Trinity. It bastardized the shit out of what the Nightstalkers really were, went with the cliched plot of "let's kill Dracula to stop all vampires," and the acting was way too campy. Reynolds works 110% as Deadpool - in this movie though he clashed with the atmosphere the previous films set up. If I were Snipes, I would've done everything I could to distance myself from that film. It literally ruined the legacy of the franchise.

    • @notmyrealname453
      @notmyrealname453 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      They did ask him to come back. He declined in order to make Hellboy. They also asked Blade's director Stephen Norrington to return. He declined as well due to retiring after The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

    • @thehelpfulpug5820
      @thehelpfulpug5820 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Trinity's cast was chosen based on talent, not external features like skin colour or ethnic background. Racists like you and Snipes have always ruined things by throwing tantrums because the colour of someone's skin isn't what they want, so you and him basically ruined the Blade series because of the skin colour of the cast....

    The Nightcrawlers base was the McBarge, a McDonalds restaurant barge that was a thing for the 1986 Canada fair. But after the fair they couldn’t use any more due to cost and left to decay in the middle of a lake. After it was used for Blade Trinity it was back where it was to rot some more. Then in 2016 it was finally saved, and in 2017 it’s been announced it will turn into a Deep Sea Museum.

      Problem is, unless Snipes' attitude has mellowed over the years, I don't think anyone really wants to try another run at him as Blade.
      On a side note, it's good he passed on Black Panther, because if he was upset at the amount of white actors/actresses in Trinity, could you imagine him having to work on Civil War+Infinity Wars 1 and 2? If the tales from Trinity are true, he'd jump ship so fast, Quick Silver would seem like Blob.

    Here is a bonus one. OK a lot of fans know this one, but their might be some that don't. Another endingg for the first Blade film had another set up for the sequel. A scene that was shot but didn't end up in the film had Blade end up on a rooftop with the main female character and they see another vampire in the distance in daylight. This was Morbius the character we recently saw on the big screen. But in the Blade film was played by the director. The director of the first film wanted Morbius to be the villain in Blade 2.

    • @shaqmaverick
      @shaqmaverick 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Logan isn't exactly a Trilogy ending. That was something of a byproduct spinoff from the Xmen. Don't forget hi last films we'ren't good. Captian America ... That's a pass. Thor... pass i guess. It felt like a spin off as well then a sequel but whatever.

    • @Busternutt69
      @Busternutt69 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you cant pick and chose what a trilogy is lmao Logan was a sequel to Wolverine which was a sequel to Origins. its a trilogy. Ragnarok and CW are the third story in their characters arcs. making it a trilogy. just cause theyre in a bigger series also doesnt mean they arent trilogies.
      but Dark Knight Rises was excellent, honestly kind of hard to follow heaths joker and overall impact of Dark Knight. but it was a strong end.

    Can we all please agree that both David S Goyer AND Wesley Snipes were at fault during Blade Trinity? The script was terrible and Goyer's direction was...
    Even so, the movie may have been a bit more bearable if Snipes had brought his A-Game. It's what actors do. Act to the best of their ability and they will be praised even if the movie's crap. Instead, he helps the movie crash and burn.

    • @angrykeeper
      @angrykeeper 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I don't really get why people take sides, Wesley is definitely just hardcore being a drama queen and Goyer was not good for the movie either. Honestly the main thing that saved it as a bearable movie was Ryan Reynolds comic relief. Jessica Biel did a good job but she didn't get a whole lot of lines, her fight scenes were good though.I would agree that they definitely could of hired more than just a bunch of white actors. The first 2 was very diverse and I think it helped the movie.

    One little thing: Blade was not Goyer's first comic/superhero film. The Crow City of Angels was two years earlier.. Miramax and Weinstein interfered and ruined his vision leading to him disowning it sadly but it is his first superhero film.

    No, Blade is from 1998, Spawn (August 1, 1997) is the first black superhero movie, followed by Steel (August 15, 1997) with the great Shaquille O'Neal.
    Later on Hancock with Will Smith was a superhero movie with a black protagonist.
    African american superheroes were a thing before Black Panther, but SJW weren't a thing, so nobody felt the need to make a fuss about it, they were just enjoying (or disliking) the movies :)

    Funny he didn’t mention the TV series. Granted, it didn’t have Wesley Snipes, but this was probably for the best. Sticky Fingaz did a decent job as Blade anyway, and the show did have a pretty charismatic villain - a suave British vampire in a nice suit, who is adored by the people of Detroit. Even Blade’s new assistant can kick some vampire ass, despite being Asian and nerdy.
