Oops I made a boo boo, I got the actor wrong for Whistler, he was played by actor Kris Kristofferson, the article I was reading said Patrick McGoohan was another alternative actor to play the character and I got the information muddled up and it doesn’t help I am unfamiliar with both actors. Apologies, no harm or foul intended!

A major thing a lot of people don't realize is that the Blade of the comics was almost a completely different character from the one in the film. He wasn't a half-human, half-vampire hybrid. He was a human being who had immunity to vampirism owing to his prostitute mother being killed by Deacon Frost as she gave birth to him. He couldn't be turned into a vampire and he couldn't be hypnotized by their gaze, but he didn't have any special powers. He got by on skills, smarts, ruthlessness and to some extent, hatred. He also had a totally different personality--in the vein of many Marvel heroes, he spoke in very informal manner, referring to Dracula, for example, as "Big Daddy Fangs."

You gotta remember how much competition there was at the time, I realize it's nothing compared to the sheer amount of superhero moves that came out in the 2000's but still this was uncharted waters and there's was many other IP's that had come and gone with very little success. Video game movies were hit and miss. Super Mario Bros (93), Double Dragon and Street Fighter (94), Mortal Kombat (95). Mortal Kombat having been a big hit, unlike the other comic book movies you mentioned such as Spawn. Comic and video game movie really improved in quality right after Blade came out with X-Men, Resident Evil and even Tomb Raider. I doubt Underworld would exist without Blade, having been so successful several years prior, not to mention video games like BloodRayne and even the TV series Buffy which blew up just after Blade came out...

I just can't imagine many people being a fit for the Blade role. You need somebody who looks the part, can act at least a little, and looks competent in a melee fight. Snipes is perfect for the role. He has the look, he definitely can act and actually knows martial arts. At that time, the only other guy who might even come close to having all three was Michael Jai White and he had just done Spawn the year before, which wasn't exactly a blockbuster.

@Minty Comedic Arts: Wish you'd now do 'Blade II' ( also written 'Blade 2' ) - which co- starred brilliant actor Ron Perlman [ earlier of "Vincent" in the brilliant, but unfortunately short-lived, T.V. series version of "Beauty & the Beast" ( 1987 - 1990; ) and later of "Hellboy" in 'Hellboy' ( 2004 ) and 'Hellboy II: The Golden Army' ( 2008 ) fame. ] [ Also: ALL three movies - 'Blade II,' 'Hellboy,' and 'Hellboy II: The Golden Army' were directed by Guillermo del Toro ( BAFTA- winning - for 'Pan's Labyrinth' in 2006, Mexican- born screenwriter- director. ) ]

The perfect balance of corny, gruesome and badass. That “f**ck yeah” arm move blade does in the bloodbath intro is the perfect example. Very few movies can get away with this, let alone pull it off.

There were some awesome filming moments and scenes and overall visuals. I loved the color tone they used, everything felt like fluorescent lighting but grittier, the driving scenes with the sped up quick action moments and the attitude of the movie was perfect.
I can totally agree with the hollow feeling of the movie, it need more lore and history to explain some things. Drawing the viewer in and maybe grab the comic to find more backstory, not of Blade but the vampires/leaders/ect. Overall the Blade series sits in a well deserved spot within my broader hoard, Blade 1 & 3 being my favorites.
Fingers crossed they do something with this franchise WORTH doing.

You left out a couple things. Cameo by Traci Lord's who led actor Kenny Johnson (Curtis "Lemonhead" Lemansky from The Shield in an early role), into the blood rave. Maybe in a later video, Goyer wanted to keep it serious until Blade 3 when he made his version of Batman and Robin. He said wanted to include as many actors from Best in Show as possible. Also no follow up to the Night Stalkers in part 3 who were really interesting .

you also said that the vampires of Los Angles wanted Hlades blood. The movie is set in Detroit. But this is another great video.

Minty, do you think Blade influenced the style of fight scenes in The Matrix? Watching the flight clips from your video, I can't help but notice how much they remind me of The Matrix.

Before the whole Copid-19 virus thing happened a couple years back NYC dive bars ripped a page out of the Blade movie and had its own version Blood Rave. I would read about it in the Village Voice and thought it was dumb. Now come to think of it; it would interesting to go whenever this pandemic clears up.

Mr. Minty my man... superb commentary on this film I totally agree with your opinions.. blade 2 was awesome...trinity was ehh..but apparently they're gonna do a remake so well see how that goes.. I hope snipes makes a cameo ..or even plays a major character like the villian... speaking of remakes makes me think of hellboy..I gotta go check if you did a video on that

I didn't know Morbius was originally planned to appear. Guess that explains who was apparently crawling across the roof of a building in that one scene with the time lapse transition.
