After seeing some comments I shared my thoughts in a blog post about the set being inaccurate or not, take a look at it here - racingbrick.com/2021/07/lego-10279-volkswagen-t2-camper-van-detailed-building-review/
@@AB0BA_69 I wouldn't say it's a must have. A decent build with nice solutions here and there and some clever functions, but as I said in the review it lacks the wow factor for me that I felt with the Ecto-1 and the Porsche 911.
I'm not planning to purchase this set so being able to see all of the techniques incorporated in this build is highly appreciated. Keep up the great work!:)
Comments from my six-year-old, whose favourite things are cars and Lego: "You have definitely got to get me this." Said about twenty times, throughout the video, a few times followed up with, "It's so cool." And a number of times with, "It has so many moving parts," either before or after. And, as I was typing this, he said, "You have definitely got to get me that. It's so cool." When you asked for comments, he said, "I say YES. It's so cool." Well, that's Christmas sorted, then. I already have the previous version for him, saved up for Christmas. Since this one is so much more detailed, I guess I'll give him that first, then this for his birthday. Wouldn't want him to be disappointed with the other one. Thank you for this review! I really enjoyed your comments and explanations, and you've helped me plan my Christmas/birthday gifts for my kid, on top of that.
I have 2 of the T1 sets, one is “scrapped” for parts and the other is “Half scrapped” by means it’s entire cabin for the driver is missing. But the camper section is intact, a “clusterfock” of bricks makes a wall where the rear of the drivers seat was.
I'm watching this for the second time, a year on. Such a great review, as always. I love the creativity in this set. It's not something I would normally buy, but my tastes are changing and I can see this would look fantastic on display. Love it.
Unfortunately, it's already gone off the official Lego site. That's a strange paradox. The first one lasted for 9 years and the second one didn't last even 2 years. It's sad because it's a really nice set with cool little functions
Great review and lots of interesting details , but let’s just agree this one isn’t as good as the older version from an external design POV. Especially the nose and windshield
I think it's very much a personal preference. The previous one had more "iconic" details that are easy to associate even if they are not super accurate. The windshield's curvature is clearly a limitation of the material, LEGO needs to stick to their own designs as well. The front lights should definitely point straight and not outwards, but for me that's all about the front.
First purchase I am going to do in years. I really like those new crator cars but I never have any emotional tie with it, so it is just for buying and they just take up space. But I was gifted the T1 model a few years back and I still have it, so this will look neat besides it but I think the new building techniques will completely shame the first version. This one looks a lot better!! Great colors and it looks very sleek! Also, I like the surfboard and chairs although the Surfboard feels like its not really a part as It doesnt fit anywhere in the camper. Still would have liked more printed pieces, especially the ones you need. I would have understood if they didnt print the flowers as that is optional
That new green pin piece should be a nice addition to Technic sets. The green antistud-pin combined with the typical stud-pin should provide a half thickness gap, similar to the typical half liftarms, but provides only pin connection which should make it more versatile.
1:00 Yes, I know. One year in home office had some effect, but no reason to get personal! :p The model lacks a bit of rounding on the edges, but for the fact that it is built without many / large special parts, it is well made. I realy like the doors, the roof and the "front steering". Great set, great video, thanks for the review :)
Yeah the T1 is way more recognisable but this seems to fit in with the rest of the Creator Expert vehicles in terms of complexity, looks and size. Personally I'd rather they waited a bit more and just given us a remake of the T1
The curves of the front and the windshield are not authentic in my eyes. The pictures with the direct comparison make this clear. The model seems too angular to me and with too many straight surfaces, the original has very soft, round shapes.
I'm sad that I have no choice but to buy a lot of Lego vehicles that were previously released and discontinued because I just started Lego as a hobby. I bought Fiat 500 and Camper van T2 this month, and I want to buy Camper van T1 next month, but the price is too high. The T2 I ordered is scheduled to arrive tomorrow, so I'm really looking forward to it. Thank you for the review!
I didn't even know there was going to be a new camper van set, though I guess it's about time the older set got retired as new pieces and techniques have been introduced for the last decade.
Amazing detailed review! Love the design, though I still wish that the size will be same as the previous version. It's kind of weird when putting them side by side

The T1 is retired? It just came out LOL. Good video, the functions have me wanting it more than just the looks. It isn't immediately recognizable as a VW Van like the T1 is, the T1 nailed the iconic classic look
But this van seems a little familiar from back to the future but a little different and yes t2 is reconizable too as a hippie van too but not as much as the t1

I have the previous version and will pass on this set. I think some of these sets are just getting too big. I like more detail and denser builds, but I have limited space for display and the new version seems enormous. Honestly the ecto-1 could have been scaled down about 25% percent too. The T1 is also more recognizable and iconic.
pretty interesting, I still prefer the old generation but the new have some interesting inovation. Sliding door aren't that good (I would have to see irl), better opening back door and steering is cool.
Great review! I too, am disappointed with no roof rack for the surfboard. First thing I noticed. Looking forward to adding this to my LEGO car collection!
This was the review I was looking for. I see a big gap between the cloth and the roof. Looks disturbing, but you didnt mention it, so I might be ok when you have it on display. The building itself seems fun.
Thanks for review! I was underwhelmed at first but after seeing your review/build with the details and technical features I’ll be buying it! I also liked your style of filming/reviewing. I’m in process of trying to start my own review channel TrueLegoMom, and seeing your format is really helpful. I like that it’s not just a speedbuild but you really go thru the steps well without it feeling too long. I’d love to email you to ask you some questions about filming/editing...what you use to film, angle tips, do you add audio commentary afterwards, etc. great video, just subscribed to your channel!
Thanks! I can share things here as well... first I wouldn't suggest to include "LEGO" in your channel's name, as sooner or later TLG could ask you to change it. I suggest to check out the fair play brochure on lego.com, that has a lot of dos and don'ts about the trademark usage. My first reaction to this was what they made a successor to the t1 and what it actually sold for 9 whole years and been without my t1 for a little less years too so time for upgrade?
color, interior and front are far better in the original imo, but this new iteration looks phenomenal nonetheless. the new techniques for the roof, the overall build and that kitchen area are beautiful and the doors are magnificent. I'd love to buy it to compare it to the older one, but its a bit pricey and im not sure that I want it, having the original one
It’s a shame they couldn’t cut back on the details of the roof and just give us printed pieces, Oh well it is what it is we can’t change it, still gonna be a day one purchase for me. Thank you for a great review👍🏻👍🏻
Those new green pins are not from Forma as someone wrote... It's a brand new pin with anti-stud. The white 3L pins w/o friction ridges came out first in the Ninjago Hydro Bounty. They are white just to distinguish easily from the black ones. What I don't get is why LEGO now made yellow 2L pins w/o friction ridges. For me personally the rainbow of Technic axes and pins is a bigger complaint than the black instructions background, which should be banned from the boxes as well. This hippy van should have had the most colorful boxes of them all. I guess the black box warns that this is a display only model that will fall apart on the slightest touch and under no circumstances playable.
The pins are color coded for a reason. I tried to build alternative sets with fully black interior, fully black pins of 3-4 different kind, and it's a nightmare even for someone experienced. I also tested that with casual builders, they hated it and used incorrect parts all the time. Agree on the box design, it really needs to be more colorful. The model's stability is not that bad, the only sensitive section I noticed so far is the front bumper.
@@RacingBrick I agree it's a little tough, but it was possible a few years ago back when LEGO sets were still labeled for kids. Even length axles in black and uneven ones in lbg worked also fine. Maybe people nowadays are more unfocused and want things the easy way. You can see this by the increasing thickness of instructions which almost trippled compared to 10 years ago. Imagine how much paper could be saved...
@@R0Sch88 but pieces were still color coded back then with black and lbg, and pins were not all black either :) Nowadays we have more colors on the axles, but as I see the yellow/red ones are used when there's a differentiation needed and the axle itself is not really visible. I've seen designers focusing more on the visible parts and using a matching color if available (e.g. black 2L axles) and if the design really asks for it.
Too bad you didn't mention the most obvious flaws with this set: the front being very ugly and inaccurate + the blue stickers which don't match with the blue color of the van itself.
Great review as always! The Camper Van is looking pretty functional with nice aesthetics as well...we'll see how that stacks up to the upcoming TECHNIC sets. Can't wait for your reviews of those sets on July 16th. :)
I'm a bit worried about all those "snot build" assemblies..... and I'm old enough to remember the real T2 when it was on sale. Looks like an excellent "tribute" model
I am a massive Volkswagen fan and own a beetle and t6 camper van. I bought the previous Lego vw models but looking at this set it’s just sooo wrong. The front end doesn’t even resemble the t2 and the different size comparison to the t1? And also nearly double the price? Why is there no roof rack for the surfboard? Don’t get me wrong love the sliding door and the pop top , the colour combination is nice but will be passing on this one.sorry Lego but no thanks.
Loved the T1 the shape was good, features were good. The T2 however leaves me a little cold, others have mentioned the front detail and I agree. Having owned a T2, the side detail is a bit naff on the door and the overhang. It looks like more of a Commer Van from the late sixties, the lack of a roof rack is neither here nor there. The front roof is wrong, would have been better as a rack. My point of view is an opinion, will I purchase it, erring to the no side I am afraid!
My eyes are bleeding from those horrendous insides lol Looking forward to those tyres though. As for the van itself, not a fan of these sort of vehicles, much prefer CaDA's Japanese/ cars))) Maybe some JDM ones would be even better
@@Snuifduif198 "Japanese Domestic Market" - Cars that were only made for Japanese market. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_domestic_market Although a misconseption, people commonly use it for Japanese-made cars. For the sliding door, you may not have build it properly. Mine closes perfectyly. Despite this, good review, nice to see the details as itàs getting build.
Thanks for the comparison of the size of T1 and T2. That is really disappointing, they don‘t match side by side. That is not the best way to bring out new models.
@@RacingBrick that what i mean,i think it would look Funny, that thought remind me that cliche from classic kids show where Is big truck/camion And small driver
I was planning on getting this set for my bday but when I saw that the set is bigger than the T1, which I owned, I decided to not get it since it was bigger than the T1. Now I’m planning on getting The Colosseum.
I think it’s a great set, I would love it if it were a custom design but the front and roof looks extremely inaccurate and very chunky relative to the real thing
Why does Lego use different colors of stones? -I mean, for the basic? Because at the end, most of them will disappear.. But mostly they all have different colors like blue and yellow ect. Why does Lego not built up the base from black or grey stones? Ps: it don’t bother me, but I was just wonder :)
I prefer the original version (do need new white parts as I got mine used and the parts are seriously yellowed), as it was cheaper I find these cars should come in at between £65- £115
I think the designer had put a lot of efforts on the mechanism of the set, but literally forgotten about the details. Compared to the previous set, the inside is pretty boring (i was very underwhelmed seeing it in person). The roof is probably the only cool feature, but yet again the old set has a roof too. I would say I would prefer the old set much more than this. Unless this goes on sale, I don't think I would buy it

As a surfer with a VW van I can confirm that 100% of van driving surfers keep their surfboards inside the van.
Amazing video and set - I GUESS it was „tricky” for u to make it right :p
Loved the T1 the shape was good, features were good. The T2 however leaves me a little cold, others have mentioned the front detail and I agree. Having owned a T2, the side detail is a bit naff on the door and the overhang. It looks like more of a Commer Van from the late sixties, the lack of a roof rack is neither here nor there. The front roof is wrong, would have been better as a rack. My point of view is an opinion, will I purchase it, erring to the no side I am afraid!
Dig the GTI shirt!
Please let us know when you get the 10290 Pickup Truck. ;-)
My eyes are bleeding from those horrendous insides lol
Looking forward to those tyres though. As for the van itself, not a fan of these sort of vehicles, much prefer CaDA's Japanese/ cars))) Maybe some JDM ones would be even better
I've heard "JDM" so many times, but I don't know what it means. Could you explain it

Although a misconseption, people commonly use it for Japanese-made cars. Although some configurations of cars were only available in Japan as well, making them hard or impossible to find elsewhere. Kei cars are predominantly Japan-oriented for example.
@@syclone thank you
Why’d they make this T2 So much Larger than The T1 ? Now their going To be both off Scale , But The New Van Is Cool 👍🏼
I had the previous red camper van. One day while we had some contractors in the house while we were not home, someone knocked it off the shelf.
Mine too might have fallen off but next time I will not get it high and put something easily removable wheel stopper
Wait you already got the set?
Well it'd be quite a challenge to film the review without it :)
@@RacingBrick lol
For the sliding door, you may not have build it properly. Mine closes perfectyly. Despite this, good review, nice to see the details as itàs getting build.
Thanks for the comparison of the size of T1 and T2. That is really disappointing, they don‘t match side by side. That is not the best way to bring out new models.
Totally agree. What were they thinking?
Hi can I just say the type one is the beetle
The type two starts with the split screen and goes onto the bay.
The second generation of Type 2 is called T2
@@RacingBrick Lego refer to the split screen as as type 1 but it’s not.
@@qwerty100001 I did not see that reference
Az a vitrin mögötted nem az ikeás ugye? Honnan van az?
De, Ikeás. Billy könyvszekrény
I think it could look interesting if you put minifigure behind steering wheel
It would look totally out of scale
@@RacingBrick that what i mean,i think it would look Funny, that thought remind me that cliche from classic kids show where Is big truck/camion And small driver
Ooh, almost forgot that this one was coming. Nice review.
Yeah I know, too many exciting stuff scheduled for the weekend ;)
But hold on a sec..
Is it possible to convert the camper into a t2 pickup?
I was planning on getting this set for my bday but when I saw that the set is bigger than the T1, which I owned, I decided to not get it since it was bigger than the T1. Now I’m planning on getting The Colosseum.
Just FYI, the Colosseum is way bigger than the T1 :)
Ik, 9000 parts to be exact
And more expensive
I think it’s a great set, I would love it if it were a custom design but the front and roof looks extremely inaccurate and very chunky relative to the real thing
Looking forward to the Creator Expert pickup truck review.
Why does Lego use different colors of stones? -I mean, for the basic? Because at the end, most of them will disappear.. But mostly they all have different colors like blue and yellow ect. Why does Lego not built up the base from black or grey stones? Ps: it don’t bother me, but I was just wonder :)
If the interior had a single color it'd be way more difficult to follow the instructions and also to find the proper pieces
I know I’m in the minority but I love the 18+ packaging
It was very nice 😍❤❤😍😍❤
I prefer the original version (do need new white parts as I got mine used and the parts are seriously yellowed), as it was cheaper I find these cars should come in at between £65- £115
There's ways to clean yellowed parts that would certainly be cheaper than bying additional legos
@@kaisattelberg5548 I am aware of hydrogen peroxide but fore that didn't help restore the pieces
I did not see this coming!
Well, thanks for the review. Ver, very, very disappointed they didn’t make it the same scale as the T1. That kills it for me. No sale, LEGO.
looks a bit hard to build but it could give me interest
great video btw
I think the designer had put a lot of efforts on the mechanism of the set, but literally forgotten about the details. Compared to the previous set, the inside is pretty boring (i was very underwhelmed seeing it in person). The roof is probably the only cool feature, but yet again the old set has a roof too. I would say I would prefer the old set much more than this. Unless this goes on sale, I don't think I would buy it
i my rear door doesn’t fit it’s really torquing me
In Australia we call it a kombi
Cool! 👍 👍 👍
