  • This is the second part of my detailed review about the 10317 Icons Classic Land Rover Defender 90. This episode is about the presentation and testing of all the features, the different build options, some measurements and tests, a comparison with other Creator Expert vehicles, some cool background information from the designer himself and my final verdict.

    A good review, balanced and fair, and I think that Lego(and the designer) have really captured the iconic look of a Landrover Defender within the constraints of the bricks/materials available to them. If I was to be picky, I would have preferred the original, Series 1 Landrover, but that apart, it is a set that I would like to own and build. The biggest sticking point is the price, and the current £210 UK price tag makes this unaffordable at the present time. That said, I bought the Technic Ford GT, which was reduced to £89.99 by one online retailer, and it us a fantastic set that has many build features and even at its original Lego Store price was, I feel, priced appropriately.😮

    My dad is a huge fan of the Defender, he even owns that particular model, but in real life size! He had him for 20 years now. His bday is coming up soon and I will pick it up for him, looks like an excellent present for his 55th bday gift. Price is a bit high for my taste, especially in polish currency. Euro to PLN ratio isn't 5.0, but Lego does it at 5.0, which makes it a bit more expensive for us, tho managable. I'm more of a technic guy, so I prefer to put my money into those builds, but that Defender looks fantastic.
    Awesome review, I absolutely love this channel and the approach to test every aspect of each LEGO set and all of angles are always covered. Thanks!

    The cool thing is that the lego models could easily be improved by its owners. You showed us so many hints and winks. E.g. zetros…. Keep up the good work. Maybe the defender could get more attention if the color is tan. Ok, a connection to a cigarette brand isn’t helpful. But the camel trophy was a cool event.

    Great overview and comparisons. Didn't expect it to scale much larger than the Classic pickup truck, but the height for it is impressively good. Also loved the many alterations that can be done. Didn't know the roll bar could be used without the top for a jungle explore look which IMO is really cool. Suspension also is a great inclusion though it looks somewhat messy/incomplete from the bottom. Definitely going to get this one at reduced price at some point. Going to get either the DeLorean or the Technic Ford GT before this one to rack up some VIP points.

    Honestly , I´m positively surprised by the level of sophistication of the suspension. I would have expected a live axle layout with the spring/shock absorber unit, but not the trailing arm part. As always your analysis is concise and fair. After I got the Technic New Defender for 125 Euros on discount the overall value of the "Icons" classic version isn´t that great. But there is stil the chance to observe the price development and if it starts growing on me over time.

  • @led0073

    I just purchased the Defender set yesterday, started it last night, and got to bag 5. I'm really pleased with it so far. I also have the Technic version. I do like how they have managed to combine some technic elements and system build on the new one to allow some suppension and steering for a more realistic model. They both have faults, and nothing is perfect, referring to the annoying blue connectors on the technic version when it's a green ish model. Surely it's time lego could colour match them. As for this set, yes, it's system, and you do have to not handle it so hard or bits fall off. But these days, sets of both technic and system aimed at adults mainly end up as display peices and sit on shelves anyway, so I don't see the issues.
    But if you're into the Lego cars of either system or technic, then this Classic Defender 90 is a must-have. It's going to look fantastic next to my technic version.
    Like you hidden sets find, especially the open version within the scaffolding. Might have to get a second set!!!

    Even as a Technic fan, I still like the LEGO Icons Classic Land Rover Defender 90. I really like all of the accessories and all the features of the LEGO car itself such as the steering wheel position option and the functional suspension. I think I made an another option, if I want something to be motorized, then I would simply motorize this LEGO Icons Land Rover Classic Defender 90 (which I'm planning to do that when I will get the set). In fact, due to its all of the accessories included in the set makes me feel that this LEGO Icons Land Rover Classic Defender 90 is ready for the off-road adventure. I know, the System pieces might get lost while off-roading but I would just drive carefully or do more modifications of the set.

    I like the defender, so I would want to get one.
    The technic defender is the more modern version which is not my cup of tea, and I'm a lego fan at heart that really want a display model first, something that has some play features second.
    Bought that set and to me the price is okay. My only frustration with this set being that it's probably the only Icons set that will have a working suspension, I would have loved to get one in something like the 911, even if it wouldn't have had much range in it.

    The price per piece metric isnt a water tight perspective for pricing.
    However I do believe its a way to keep them honest. Makes it very clear when they're spiking the pricing. And its only a step removed from Price per weight in plastic. Which I believe is somewhat close to how LEGO themselves look at it, As its pretty much just all plastic mass it costs them to print.

    Overall I think this is a good model. The playability of it is limited as it will fall apart, but for a LEGO collector looking for something nice to display, this is a great choice. As much as I like it, I'm still undecided if I want to spend $240 for it to sit on a shelf in my studio.

    This was possibly your best review ever. Good,fair, and clearly took a lot of thought, effort and editing work. Yeah, I am one of the notoriously critical viewers and I despise LAN, but this was very good indeed, I must say. I am only into Display, and I think this is a VERY rare adult-looking LEGO display set..it just looks great. It is ridiculously overpriced, should be maybe 100 USD realistically for what it is and what it cost LEGO to produce and they would still make a decent profit..But it is LEGO, we know what's up, and I will get 2 of them when they are on sale in a year, because I want to display one with all the bells and whistles and one as an open minimalistic Jeep type car. Again, this was a very good review, thanks.

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad you like the content. Yes, it was a lot of work to make these videos about the Defender. As for LAN, I think there's a lot of misunderstanding. LAN is a resource, a tool that allows us to create reviews for you as early as possible. I'm not a retailer, so I don't have sets in my inventory 2 months in advance like some other channels out there, and I don't have friends at LEGO stores like some other reviewers, so being recognized enables me to do early reviews. I don't think anyone should be judged by how they source their sets. For example, I wouldn't charge membership fees or Patreon support to make review videos, but I accept that exists as well. There are honest and hard-working reviewers among both LAN members and non-LAN members, and in both categories there are some who put less effort into their work.

    • @TheRealFeechLaManna
      @TheRealFeechLaManna ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RacingBrick Yes I can agree to all that, for sure, however it does not adress what I think is the 2 main reasons for most of us who do not support LAN. The first is that we simply can not, and for obvious reasons, trust reviews by LAN people, no matter how much each of you claim to express your own and true thoughts. You all have something to lose by being critical, and too many LAN members are very much uncritical or ignore obvious criticisms. Held Der Steine is the gold standard, if he can come up with several relevant criticisms of a set of which the LAN-reviewer mentions only one or none, they are either dishonest or just incompetent reviewers.
      The second main point is that you are essentially marketing representatives for LEGO. How can it be healthy for a fan and consumer community that most of the big reviewers are working for the greedy megacorp?This includes the problems with LAN-members doing 'unboxings' and flaunting sets worth hundreds upon hundreds of Euros, on one hand normalising such expenditure in a community full of kids, making them feel 'out of the loop' if they can't have everything, and on the other hand normalising the prices among the reviewers themselves, making them numb to the fact that they are flaunting one plastic toy after the other that costs the same as a decent student laptop!
      I do admit that some LAN-reviewers are taking some of this criticism and are improving ie becoming more critical, and I applaud this development, which is why I felt it my duty to post today to commend you for the excellent review, praise well deserved.

    • @joevictor53
      @joevictor53 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheRealFeechLaManna I have to agree with this. There are a few LAN members like RacingBrick that can be a bit more fair. But then you get others that will show a $500+ set that they didn't pay for and say it's totally worth the money and won't mention the price at all. They're not spending that money so they can't be fully fair about it no matter how hard they claim. Plus like you said, there are a lot of them that aren't critical and only focus on the good things because they claim their channel is a "positive" place. People should take into account how reviewers get their sets. Someone like Jangbricks is seeing that money go out of their bank account when they buy a set and review it so they're going to understand how normal consumers like us will feel when we buy a set. Someone like Bricksie is getting a set for free so their bank account isn't being affected by them getting that set and they might not mention the price or feel like they need to take that into account for the review. They can claim to be fair and impartial but when you see criticisms being made by several other reviewers and being overlooked by LAN members, it is noticeable.

    • @TheRealFeechLaManna
      @TheRealFeechLaManna ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joevictor53 man that is so well said, and thank you for it! I am totally on your page here. And I know no worse words than 'Bricksie' and 'Emmasaurus'. These are like straight out enemies of sanity, decency and a reasonable philosophy of life. But that is just me, I am sure. Second more than anything, I hate the 'LAN unboxing!' videos, showing off stuff they got for free long before anyone else could buy it. And yes, they become insensitive to the expense normal people must pay for all these 2-500 USD sets. And if you only knew how the LEGO heirs are spending the billions we made them..seriously! It burns my heart to think of it. Race horses and failed business ventures for the elite all the way. Not like old Kirk himself for sure..and I could go on. But yes, Racing Bricks and even Tiago have listened (I feel) and have become more balanced, despite the risc of the overlord's ire. Jang ofcourse is showing the path, he always did, and Holly has never been better than after her fall from LAN's grace. And so, while I watch all Racing Bricks videos without posting angry bla bla all the time, I felt it was now I should post to show my undivided support of a great review like this one. I hope the fellow will take it with the good intentions it was written in, because I really do feel this guy seems like 'decent folk', if you know what I mean.
      PS: Let us not mention the LAN reviewers who will promote expensive sets they know are a failure, like the Black Panther bust or Toy Story sets, while promoting buying the sets through their own referral links so they can make money from your purchase! That should be illegal, and likely is in civilised countries!

    • @Deatehefished
      @Deatehefished ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheRealFeechLaManna I generally agree, I've been watching LEGO channels for many years, but found RackingBricks only a few months ago, by a total accident! I did realize quite fast that he's a LAN reviewer, however, I must say, I like his reviews the best out of all. I like his calm tone, he explains usually almost all details, flaws and discuss price. I like how he never tells you whether the set is worth it or not, which I think is the best aspect of his LAN reviews compared to others. You get a showcase, some explanation, build, but ultimately based on everything You see here, he never persuades you to buy, always leaving that decision to us. A bit of reverse psychology there, but nontheless it's the correct way.
      I do enjoy reviewers who take longer time and spend their own cash, as their reviews are usually very in detail, but sometimes I just want a professional piece, ealier than launch to make up my mind and honestly, I pick this channel for it. For bigger purchases, something I've had my eye on for a while, I usually go to reviewers that test ins and outs of every segment of the build and pay attention to smallest details - but that's just my irk, I like to know if everything is fine down to the smallest details.

    On page 7 of the instructions, it tells you that the bonnet bulge was added for the (4 cylinder) Ford Puma diesel engines. On Page 240, it tells you the engine you have built is a 5 cylinder turbo diesel (which must be the Land Rover TD5). It then suggests on the following page it suggests you build the bonnet bulge version for the ‘turbo diesel’. The fact is, both the V8 engine and TD5 engines that Lego provide, wouldn’t be fitted to a Defender with a bonnet bulge. Building this version, would be incorrect to either fitted engines provided.

    I haven't looked at it in detail, but the amount of pieces for accessories and customisations seems to be growing... The price per piece is similar to the Ecto and Delorean, and better than the Camaro and the Porsche, but the total price is higher than all of them except the Ecto. The first few Creator Expert/ Icons cars were around €100, then there were a few around €170, and now we're going over €200. Will the next Icons car cost €250 and come with a ton of extras again? I hope not...
    I would have been happy for this car to have few accessories, one engine and no suspension to get a price tag below €200. Like you said, it's a display piece. Steering is nice for 'posing', but suspension does nothing for a static display. Anyway, it's just a thought...

      This right here. The T1 Camper Van was my "gateway" set into bigger Lego sets. It cost like £80 back then and that was a lot for me as a newcomer to adult Lego but I was okay with it. Then they went up to around £100 and then £150 and I thought it would stay at the price for a while before the next increase. I really wanted to display the regular version but I'm going to feel like I'm throwing money away by not having the accessories built with the car. I'd much rather it be a bit cheaper and they sold an accessory pack as a separate set. It was fine with the Ford Mustang and less so with the Porsche and Camaro but this has way too many optional things

      They don't do contemporary vehicles that are *only* used for military purposes, that's quite different. The Mercedes Zetros is also used by the military for example, but they still made a Technic set of it.

  • @drdel76
    @drdel76 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for this very balanced and fair review. As the UK owner of a 1998 Land Rover Defender 90 I am bitterly disappointed with this design. The camper van windscreen is a cop-out. It surely would have been easy to use a flat piece of plastic and to create a door frame. A sticker for the A-frame pillars?? Rubbish! The A-frame design of the actual Defender is an iconic element of the character of the vehicle. From the side this model just looks wrong.
    Your review of other options is good, but I would add the Tamiya RC Defender 90 to the list. It is very true to the design and is far better value for money. The Lego set will have to come down by 50% before I would consider it.
