Personally I love it when there's a complex technic system seamlessly integrated into a build. I find engineering fascinating and really enjoy seeing the seemingly random blob of technic pieces slowly reveal it's true purpose during the build. I also just don't like how Technic sets look so I'm always happy with how well LEGO hide the mechanisms in these kinds of sets.
It depends on the set! For the typewriter I didn't actually mind it as I was mentally prepared for a heavy Technical mechanism inside. For this one not so much, and I've seen previous Expert Cars doing steering without this heavy amount of Technic.
I was 12 when the first Technics sets came out. They were a dream for me and have always had a special place. I love seeing them used in a set like this -- but I respect that it isn't for everyone.

This genuinely seems like the perfect build for me. It's my dream car in the colour I would have it in. The details inside the car and easy accessibility to see them is incredible. The functioning sliding doors and turnable wheels are so cool. The different build styles with original Lego and technic combined in one is something I personally really enjoy. The size seems just right to fit on my shelf, not too small to the point where there's no detail and not too big to the point where it looks too out of place. I definitely think I'm going to buy this when I get the chance.
I ended up using a small strip of doublesided tape to hold the curtains in place. I wish they used clear stickers instead, they really stand out like a sore thumb in it's current state.
Yeah, I think Lego lazied and just threw a ready to use glass part instead of an authentic windshield and didn't bother to round corners... The interior is amazing though.
I have never wanted a random Lego set more. This Lego set is beautiful, and just… amazing. I am quite literally at a loss for words just attempting to describe my love for this set.
As a part of a VW family I feel obligated to save and pick this one up, I love the look and design and i think it will go great in my collection of creator expert cars (of wich I have none)
Watching your video sparked an old childhood memory of me watching the designer video for the old Camper Van presented by the LEGO designer John-Henry. I know you're not the designer of the new Camper Van, but the feeling is almost similar since you were a LEGO designer, and now making a review of the Camper Van. Wow, I still can't believe it's been a decade. As for the new model, it looks and functions great, and I love the techniques used.
Personally, I'm a fan of technique builds. I've only recently gotten back into Lego, since I now have space to display finished sets. While working on the NES, I loved the moments when mechanical parts just clicked together, like getting the pop up tray to work, or the tv screen to spin. Even little things like getting knobs to make clicking noises are nice. Currently, I need space to display more sets, along with the budget to justify it, but this looks like something I'd enjoy building.
Just finished mine. It looks so awesome on my model shelves. I got this as my Christmas gift and finally decided to start it. It took me a couple days to put it together. Mildly challenging but fun to build. 8.5/10 definitely love it.
Great review, building the set now! I am having some frustration with opening the rear door to access the engine though, it's a little tough to open and close!
The price is about right in UK at 7p per brick. the new door functions to hide hinges are great. There should be less stickers. the windscreen looks like that from Ecto-1 10274
Oh my goodness! I absolutely love the old VW camper van models and was hoping that Lego would make a new version of the 2011 set! I am definitely interested in buying this! Great video, by the way!
I have that original Volkswagen Van! My cousin-in-law had a friend who worked at Lego who had one with a broken box that they couldn’t sell, so they gave it to me for free. Loved that set. This updated set looks smooth!
Quite frankly: if it wasn’t printed on the box I would not really have recognized this as VW Campervan (or "Bully" as it's called here in Germany). I think the designers dropped the ball on this one. They didn't manage to capture the most pronounced design features and this looks to me more like a generic van than anything else. Also, there seem to be some issues with stability (I saw another review today where the reviewer struggled to open the rear hatch without pieces falling off). Add the issues with the stickers whose color don't match the bricks, and this doesn't seem to be up to the usual standard of the Creator Expert cars. The color choice looks kind of plain to me, so I think this really needs those extra stickers to pop. The T1 was the more iconic version of the real car, and so was the T1 LEGO model.
@@SkaterStimm I wasn't talking about the window. I know that the T2 doesn't have the split window. But the whole shaping of the front and especially the roof looks off to me. When I look at a picture of the real T2 and the LEGO model side by side, I can't really tell that this is supposed to be the same car. If you look at how they nailed the Mustang and the Porsche, this one really can't compare.

I'm currently rebuilding my T1 camper! Unfortunately a few years ago it fell into 'The Bin'. I love the set and I have found almost every piece for it so far. I can't wait to get it all rebuilt.
Prefer the red one, but the point is it is very easy to create detail in such large scale. The real skill is to make a model minifig scale that is instantly recognisable as a VW camper. Personally, I used the 31079 'generic' yellow camper and modded the frontage to give it the iconic VW look. I also shrank it from 8 studs to 6 wide, which is the optimum vehicle size for minifigs (episode 1 on my channel).
Great video! I might’ve overlooked it, but I’d be very interested in a video that goes into your complex relationship with Technic. From my end, the merging of the two makes this even more compelling! :)
Lego needs to step up their printing colour matching game. Their stickers don't match and their instruction colors are always off. I think they need to hire someone who specializes in cmyk printing to match the actual brick colors to the printed pieces as well as their stickers.
3:35 I honestly still don't understand why LEGO keep making the Stickers have background. It's already meant to go on a colored piece - why not make the Sticker be transparent...?

@@TiagoCatarino since it is upgrade, no gaps, bigger, based on next gen, more technical features like ecs. actual steering and smoother looking overall because lego in ten years has been less boxy, new car designs with even more sloping, more pieces on sets because they put more smaller pieces and they introduced new colors and use already existing ones more. It’s a cool model, but since we already have a T1 and a Surfer-VW-Beetle it seems too repetitive!
The T1 was retired last year after being on shelves for 9 years! I'm assuming LEGO is hoping this one is as successful as the previous model was, time will tell!
I kinda want to see it succeed
Have both. Now I just need to find the Beatle for my set
Your channel is so good!! I love how efficient the videos are. 😃
Appreciate that!
now i don't regret completely taking the body of the original one (when its gone its just wheels some technic pins and 2 loooooong technic bricks
I'm a big fan of this set, but the dark grey floor feels so much colder and less cozy than the original and it's black & white checkerboard floor
Easy fix, but I agree!
What a great build for vw t2. Much better then 2011 version
I can't wait for this 🤯
Like, the van is cool,
But that new clip piece!!! That's awesome!
