    This is strange. I did my first ever reflow on a Nintendo switch and I don’t know if I was successful or not. Before when I put pressure on the CPU nothing happened. So now I attempted a reflow and it was still a blue screen of death but when I put pressure it works? Does it need another reflow because maybe all the solder balls didn’t melt. I did see the cpu move but I’m not sure what to do now because maybe another reflow will damage it?

  • @Daniel-dl6fp
    @Daniel-dl6fp 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really wish consoles had socketed and replaceable apu's because factory solder joints are very delicate and consoles like the switch can be dropped easily amd get damaged like the one in the video so basically i got a free ps4 from a repair shop with a blod i figured out it was the apu because it had a massive crack on the corner of the case so i knew the apu would be lifted from the board so i didnt bother working on it for a while because i have no hot air station or reflow experience so i ended up using the washer trick which puts extra pressure on the apu and its still working to this day which is about a year since i fixed it so it really should be socketed i know the socket could still get damaged but it would be much easier to replace the socket than to reball an apu also i dont think a socket wouldnt get damaged easily so therefore a better option

    • @TheCod3r
      @TheCod3r  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally I'd prefer sockets too, but that will never happen with consoles sadly 😥 in terms of the washer trick, the problem there is you'll end up never being able to fix that properly because it'll warp the board to a point where it won't be fixable because of the extra pressure 😞

    Correct me if I'm wrong or if you don't need it. You said you might have to take it apart again anyway, but it looks like you didn't put anymore thermal paste between the cpu and the plate

    • @TheCod3r
      @TheCod3r  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's a good point but personally I've not seen any difference in thermals (using a flir one thermal camera) when replacing that paste. It's a very thin plate so thermal performance is basically unaffected by it to be honest

    • @Cerus98
      @Cerus98 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheCod3r - Thickness is irrelevant. The metal surfaces are never 100% perfect. Thermal compound is designed to fill the microscopic gaps and transfer heat mire efficiently. Not replacing the paste is just lazy.

    Without taking my switch apart I applied pressure in the same area that he did (approx location of the cpu) and sure enough my switch turned on the second I stopped it glitched and I had to reset. Now I need to take it apart and do the repair.....no so easy

      I took mine apart. Today and just added Flux and used a heat gun. Turned on, fixed it. Thanks for this video, saved me $250.

    Hi nice video. I have two nintendo switch tablets that have a blue screen. What do you charge to fix them ? Would you be willing to fix them ?

    • @TheCod3r
      @TheCod3r  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends what the cause is really. Most BSOD repairs can be done with just a CPU reflow which I charge £50 for. If they did require a reball I would charge £65 as that's a longer process to complete :)

    I’ve tried reflowing my switch lite a few times and usually it will work afterwards, but then if I set it down or move it around it’ll freeze and then return to the blue screen. Any ideas/tips on what I could be doing wrong?

    • @reubenvanderkodde5789
      @reubenvanderkodde5789 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not an expert by any means, but that sounds like whatever solder ball came loose isn't making a very good connection when you reflow it. When it gets jostled, the weak connection breaks again and you're back to square 1

    Putting pressure on the cpu with a blue screen got the switch to boot, but after reflow it is just a black screen. I’m guessing I broke the whole thing?

    i have a first gen switch that is also bent, should i replace the casing or does that not affect the apu?

    • @TheCod3r
      @TheCod3r  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had a situation last week where the customer replaced the case because it was bent and it caused a blue screen of death. The best thing I could suggest if you don't want to end up having to get it repaired is to leave it now until it does end up with a blue screen, and then replace the case if you have to get it repaired

      Yes you will need to reinstall the system software by downloading it from Sony and copying it to a usb using the instructions on their website, and then installing a fresh firmware on the new drive
