    Hey thanks for watching!
    A couple things:
I have a patreon where I share map backgrounds from videos as well as the actual scripts, you can find that here: www.patreon.com/johnnyharris
I had custom presets & luts that I use to color my videos and photos. I developed them over a year with a professional colorist. In incase that’s interesting to you, here they are: store.dftba.com/collections/johnny-harris/products/johnny-iz-luts-and-presets
Lastly, let me know if there is a video you’d like me to make, I’m always on the lookout for ideas and want to know what you’d like to see: www.johnnyharris.ch/submit-ideas

When did California stop being an island?
It took more exploration, but by 1747 King Ferdinand VI of Spain was convinced. He issued a decree stating that California was -- once and for all -- not an island. It took another century for cartographers to completely abandon the notion.

Good moment to remind you all that the original California is actually Baja California. American California was originally called Higher California for being the territory north of California, but since it became the popular one, the old California changed its name to Southern California. The California that all those legends and myths refer to and the one that was mistaken for an island for centuries, is actually Baja California.

I studied Californian history in college. I had one excellent class that was centered on the idea that California is, in fact, an island, in spite of being quite firmly attached to North America. Politically, historically, culturally, ecologically, geologically, it is separated from the rest of the continent. It was home to far and away the most cultural and linguistic diversity in pre-contact North America. It’s home to a dizzying array of endemic and unique species. It’s charted a separate political course since joining the Union. And it’s hard to get to. California is an island, even though it’s also not.

The map is not entirely a mistake since the today's California entire Central Valley was once one of the largest lakes on the continent. If explorers saw this lake (which was brackish in some parts) they could easily have thought that California was an island. Though this large lake is almost completely gone today, it's remnants & deposits are why California is the most agriculturally prolific land in the world today.

So, if you're a map guy, I know that you know that cartographers were notorious for cheating by copying other cartographer's maps. It only took one guy to accidently get it wrong,(or lie). Who can afford to go check? They eventually started placing islands that didn't exist so they could see who was copying their legit work. #sandyislanddoesntexist

    • @GeographyGeek
      @GeographyGeek ปีที่แล้ว +50

There were no copyright laws during the Island of California days. It's not that they cheated as much as professional cartographers were not typically explorers and so they relied on the accounts of others which included from other nations and maps. Sometimes they were not sure was correct but went with what seemed like the most credible theory. It wasn't brought up in the video but it's common to see the same cartographer have maps published in the same few years that actually contradict each other.

We know where we are so we can tell where something else is if we can see it. By plotting those sighting out we can create maps. Not only did those sail era sailors plot the land, they also charted the off shore soundings (depths) and seabed material (for anchoring). Bittersweet feelings from this video. As a Mexican with great memories when I lived in Ensenada, Baja California I really enjoyed understanding why the peninsula was drawn as an island for so long. I was first introduced to it in a historical museum in Ensenada and I couldn't understand how Baja California passed from an island to a peninsula to an island again. On the other hand, kinda sad that these feelings of the "magic" land of success are associated nowadays only with American California. Don't get me wrong. Baja California is a beautiful place. I felt in love with all it's ecosystems. However, passing the border from Tijuana to San Diego always left me with a kinda sad feeling. Baja California and California split exactly the developing countries of Latin America and the first world. You can feel the economical consequences of history right there.

“On such a winter’s day”. Is how the song goes. Yep. Dreaming about warmer weather was the point of the lyrics. If I lived in a colder climate I’d be fantasizing about warmer climes too. Calida Fornax. The Latin words that became California. It means hot furnace. And boy is it! I’m a native Californian. Witnessed all kinds of weirdness associated with a beachy state. The Sun bakes folks’s brains. We’re the shake n bake state. I’m old enough to remember Northern California wanting to secede from Southern California. 😅Two very different political and life views. CA will shift north over time. Long after the cities have ground o dust, what was once LA will be a suburb of Seattle. But yeah, for a long time people thought it would separate, but the faults are wrong for that. San Andreas is a transform fault, with right-lateral strike slip, ie, its shifting along north south axis, with the pacific plate shifting northerly along the slower moving NA plate. Unlike the movies, we wont become an island.
Caveat: there is some geological evidence that Baja may split off as there is a smaller fault with an east/west bearing around the salton sea spreading center. This could force baja to split away from CA itself

@@hoosierbaddy3052 I live in North Carolina now but all my family still live in CA. I will never hate on CA. It will always be home to me. I also like NC a lot but can do without the humidity and bugs everywhere. Thing is I’m not about to hate on NC though the way that people tend to hate on CA. I just chalk that kind of hate up to ignorance. Thanks for the reply!

I find interesting how American states have a sense of individuality or personality. In Mexican California we know we're Mexico and Mexico is us as well.

This is not just another TH-cam content. It's crazy how these contents are free and the fact that they're also well-presented makes these videos more entertaining. Great vid as always, Johnny! Cheers!

They're only free because of the ads through TH-cam and integrated ads. His videos, while entertainingly made, really aren't that good in the information department.

The music, the visuals, the maps and most importantly the superbly delivered information!! This is why I enjoy Johnny Harris videos especially as a Geography student.

It's been ages since I caught one of Harris' vids. Now I'm glad, because finally returning confirms that it is still as contrived and self absorbed as I foggily remember from back in '21 or '20. 🤦🏼‍♂️
