I agree with Duck that the native Japanese or those who have lived there a long time are a more interesting to get to see more about Japan below the surface level. I like to find the more niche topics rather than the same stuff over and over like "basic", living, shopping, etc.
Overall, I'd really like to get a better understanding of what life is actually like there. I would like to be able to go to Japan for an extended period of time to take advantage of some manga education or maybe language studies. (Idk if I'm too old for a student visa for anything like that though). Getting to see things can really help set more realistic expectations, though some of it you can't know until you get there.

Yeah, it seems that the gaijin Japan TH-camrs are the mainstream Japan contents on TH-cam now. Which is interesting because a lot of'em started their channels as J-Vloggers talking about their actual lives and experiences. Then, somewhere along the way, maybe they saw the surface level contents getting way more views and decided to changed their styles???🤔Don't get me wrong, I do watch and enjoy tourist-y channels too, and believe everyone should enjoy the surface level Japan to the fullest if that's what they're into. To be fair, it's not like the ground level or underground Japan's any better. It's actually pretty hardcore because it's real life😅
For a student visa, I don't think there's an age limit. BTW, going to school to learn Japanese and make Japanese friends is the best way to experience Japan for sure👍

As a Filipino American with 30% Belgium and 30% Chinese ancestry. I found it very similar like how Filipinos and other Asians do. Im not very good in speaking in Filipino, but i understand some, and also Spanish too. Anyway i found Mandarin Chinese and Japanese more interesting so i can learn more about their culture than just pop culture. For my interests in Japan is more to zen temples and motorcycles, and martial arts stuff.

Yeah, it seems like every 2nd generations had similar experience😆
And yeah, if you're into temples, motorcycles, and martial arts, Japan is THE place👍

When my dad started speaking to me in English, I stopped speaking Spanish. He'd always try to make us speak Spanish, but it was game over. My mom spoke both fluently, but she's very American culturally. I'm the oldest, each of my siblings spoke less Spanish than the previous. lol
    I'll pick it up again...

when we would speak to our grandparents in Mexico, my dad would be on the phone in the other room telling us what to say

Both of my parents spoke English, but they always spoke to me in Korean even though I only understood less than half of what they were saying. I don't think they were training or preparing me, but it sure did help a lot when I moved to Korea. Same deal with my Japanese friends. At one point, no one spoke to me in English, just straight Japanese, no chaser🍶🤣
