I think the acting is great across the board but I think Will's actor wins the award for elevating the book's character the most. I love Will and Jin's storyline so much

Lol nice description. Actually really enjoy this episode, It's less high concept and more about the reactions of humanity and our specific humans to this crisis, and I always felt that was one of the most interesting parts of the book series

Indeed, I think for non-science oriented people, there's a lot of interesting stuff here that they can adapt and show and make it very entertaining. It's definitely more interesting than another parallel universe/dystopian future type of thing. Outside the box, for sure.

I'm only half through the first book but - and maybe it's due to translation - I find most human reactions and interactions to be completely bogus. The high concept stuff is brilliant, but things like Ye (father) defending himself with a 5 minute speech, Weng recounting his whole math-geek life without interruption, people entering other people's home and striking out conversations as if they were long time friends when they've never even met before, ... Then again, maybe he does sociologic better than he does social and the "humanity in crisis" bits will be more to my liking... (?)

@@Malfehzan The character work is by far the worst part of the books. The show is a notable improvement in that regard.

@@Malfehzan This exactly, the individual character-to-character moments aren't completely realistic, but the sociological implications and reactions are absolutely on point and where the books shine the best (along with the scifi concepts of course). You'll see a LOT more of this in books 2 and 3.

I understood Ye Wenjie's comment about "no fight at all" not to signal that she was going to sabotage earth's efforts, but rather that she was hinting at a possible peaceful solution. Where Humans and the San-Ti don't see each other as adversaries, but rather as co-equal partners.

The way Will's friends say about getting him to express his love for him and f--- Raj, they want Will and Jin together even if it's for a short time Will has left. But when Auggie says f--- Raj, she really shows her hatred for Raj.

The speed of the sophonts is limited by both their mass (so they cannot travel at lightspeed) and by the amount of power the sophont has available for acceleration and deceleration.

The title is anice tribute to a science fiction classic.

I agree about the g forces being an issue, and with the aliens stopping capsule, it's still an issue. Because of the sophons, they would have some idea of maximum g forces to keep the person alive.
NASA has had proposals to use nuclear explosions for propulsion. The proposals are available.
It seems right at the outset they would have been concerned about acceleration; 0.1 c is a red herring. We accelerate to as high a speed as possible, and then flip and burn. Since the fleet is moving fast, they need to reverse their burn sooner.

Four hundred years is a long time for modern humans. It's likely that in two hundred years people will decide the San Ti are just a myth, like the moon landing hoaxers.
"The Stars My Destination" (a book that should be on the shelf of any SF aficionado) is the title of a genre-pivotal 1956 science fiction novel by Alfred Bester, somewhat of a precursor to more modern cyberpunk novels. That title itself was likely taken from a quote by early rocketry pioneer Jack Parsons in the 40s (known as the "father of modern rocketry" as well as "the Che Guevera of occultism"): "Rocketry may not be my True Will, but it's one hell of a powerful drive. With Thelema as my goal and the stars my destination and my home, I have set my eyes on high."
I don't see the point of having a human in the ship. I'd be working on an AI to be prepared for the launch. I wouldn't think there would be anything the San Ti hasn't been told about human physicality that hadn't already been relayed to them.

Sending a person to the Trisolaran fleet is merely to create a possibility, because humanity knows very little about the Trisolaran civilization. Being light-years away, there's not much we can do. Sending someone could earn humanity some potential advantages, given that the Trisolarans are not adept at strategy. Perhaps an Earthling in their society could bring some changes to both worlds, whether it's bringing information about the Trisolaran civilization back to humanity or helping the Trisolarans understand humans better. Either way, there would be some benefits.

Auggie’s feelings on Thomas and Raj are not wrong. They may be sociopaths - they don’t possess even a shred of remorse or empathy. They might be acting in the name of “humanity,” but the lives of actual people, like those on the boat and elsewhere, clearly don’t really mean anything to them.

Very much agreed. Auggie's reaction is very believable. I too wouldn't be able to justify participating in that. She clearly didn't know children would be there, and I feel like that is what truly fucked with her. While the adults were clearly traitors to the human race (even if they were brainwashed), the children were still innocent. They could potentially have been redeemed.

Actually the speed of light is pathetically slow compared to the vastness of the galaxy. Compared to the universe it's not even a crawl. It would take a thousand lifetimes to reach the edge of the galaxy at 1C. Time dilation, lends a bit of viability to a traveler. Doesn't help the civilization sending the traveler.

Loving your reactions overall but just want to give some "defense" of Auggie. Shes clearly traumatized, but at the same time, shes not saying to just stop doing anything. She wants to do what she originally set out to do with her technology, to help impoverished communities.
The technology she developed was just used to commit a horrific attrocity in the name of war. Some people just arent cut out for war. I wouldnt be. But still, she wants to help the people in the present. Part of it is avoidance, but still, shes not like Saul, who clearly just doesnt give a fuck. I like Auggie personally. Hopefully, if theres a season 2, they can give her more scenes to make her more empathetic.

Voyager does travel at around 3.6 AU per year, unfortunately, this is not close to 1% light speed.
The distance of 4 light years between earth and Alpha Centauri (where the San Ti are from) is more than 250,000 AU.
The San Ti, at 1% light speed can travel 4 light years in 400 years.
The Voyager, at it’s current speed on the other hand, will take more than 75,000 years to cover the same distance. It’s crazy to think how far away the nearest system to our own really is.
