@@trumpetdudekjk glad you can see the funny side of things. A lot of owners are getting pissed about this never getting released after paying so much money.
I really like the Openpilot treatment of human steering input. Would like to see Tesla implement this when they're more confident of FSD Beta. It's just more comfortable to be able to smoothly correct it rather than alarm going and full disengagement. I'd guess it's going to provide more fine tuned human feedback for training purposes too.
This a a huge advantage of openpilot. Another big advantage is that you can give gas input too (on most openpilot forks) in the same way without disengaging. AND you do not have to touch the steering wheel the whole time on openpilot.
Thank you for this information. Google searches have been useless when wondering how to get adaptive cruise control on Teslas. I might keep my eyes open on older used or salvage Teslas now.
LOVE this video. Thank you Logan for comparing your car to Tesla's. This video has cemented my opinion that FSD is *not* a quality of life improvement. Quite the opposite, it's much more work than just driving the car manually. You're babysitting a toddler operating a car and waiting to catch it before it plows into a trailer, on top of the fact you can't assist it in any capacity. It's either engaged or disengaged. Meanwhile, Openpilot was shown in multiple situations that as a long time user I'd *never* use it in, like on city streets with cars along the sides and weird intersections. When it comes to highway driving, and more specifically 100-1000 mile road trips, Openpilot wins out without question.
They are doing completely different things. Tesla is trying to make a self driving car that can work in any situation. Openpilot and the drivers assistance features that are in cars by default these days just make highway driving more chill, which is cool, but completely not the point of FSD.
This is far from the truth if ur used to fsd beta. I let it drive me 99% of the time and let it take complicated intersections stress free. You know its limitations and how it will react. For example, the nudging is very easy to do but since the driver didn’t know how it seemed like baby sitting.
@@robpruzan7292 Sorry but no, FSD is stressful as hell. My inlaws have FSD and they are literally scared to use it because of the mistakes it has made. I don't mind FSD but i'm young and work in tech. I have a rav4 hybrid with openpilot and everyone in the family that has used both prefers openpilot. Sure fsd attempts to do more things but openpilot actually makes driving more relaxing. Openpilot lets you track your engagement time, in the past 1000 miles it has been engaged for 97% of them with both myself and my significant other using it. IMO the biggest problem with FSD is it doesn't work with you when you want to assist it. Openpilot integration is seemless in this regard. Also FSD,as you stated, has a learning curve.
I have gotten so used to OpenPilot that I can no longer do long drives without it. Stock systems tend to lose lane lines very easily in the rain and other bad visibility conditions where OP can handle those no problem. I once drove 85 mph in the worst rain possible using OP and had more trust then if I was driving because it could see the lanes better than me. I am now very very sad that I got a new Pilot 2023 and there is no cable for the new car. I have to wait until the new wire comes out so I can use it.
Isn't that a legal issue? I think here in the EU at least, self driving (or things like adaptive cruise control or lane keeping) have to disengage after a major intervention.
Then you bump up against the steering controller's limit. And modifying that hard limit requires reprogramming that Comma does not endorse. (It can be very dangerous to screw up your steering in such a way as to where it might overpower a human's ability to override it.)
Just wanted to make corrections. 12:27 it cut the torque. That is due it poorly lateral tune. Toyota tss2 can achieve way higher torque. 12:27 looks like Honda torque. It hit the max limit because of the bad pi values
Love the side by side/back to back comparisons. Great job Andy! But to go as far as saying OpenPilot is "not that far behind" is a bitttt of a stretch. They're clearly *very* far behind if they're not even stopping at stop signs & lights, auto lane change on highway, or taking exits on their own...
I mean in the grand scheme of things. Logan knows more about what’s coming, but I believe comma is already testing stop sign and stop light recognition. I think Openpilot has more momentum than other manufacturers stock ADAS (other than Tesla)
@@aslye On the release2 branch for the past few ver., OpenPilot 'recognizes' stop lights+signs in the sense that its path doesn't draw past where it thinks you'll stop. Certainly doesn't do anything else yet, but I just wanted to clarify :)
Don't forget Tesla has 8 cameras surrounding the car plus sensors, while the Comma has wide angle forward only. That a huge limit for auto lane change and navigation.
@@DerrickDJ But this is Tesla FSD $10-12K, teslas don't come with FSD, they come with basic openpilot which has less features then $28K Hyundais in some instances(no lane change) Openpilot competes with teslas basic autopilot, not teslas nutty $10k option, which does way less(teslas standard autopilot) and is mostly just lane centering on highways and certain roads.. it can't even change lanes
Competition will drive these prices down to nearly nothing. 10000 for something that doesn’t work yet are you kidding me. Tesla is still at level 2 , level 5 with government approval is a decade away. All these cars will be ready for the scrap yard by then.
Now the speed limit can be automatically adjusted using dragonpilot fork and smart DSU in my Prius 2016, based on online map in the background. (That's how I'm using it with comma 2.) You just have to set some maximum limit, then the openpilot adjust it according your location like resident area 20 km/h, coutry roads 90 km/h, cities or towns 50 km/h
But this is Tesla FSD $10-12K Openpilot competes with teslas basic autopilot, not teslas nutty $10k option, which does way less(teslas standard autopilot) and is mostly just lane centering on highways and certain roads.. it can't even change lanes.
George has said Comma is consistently two years behind Tesla. This video is two years old. What does everybody think? Does today's Comma compare to two years ago's Tesla?
At 3:28 he says he's using a custom software I have a 21 RAV4 hybrid I would love to get a link to that specific software! or a video showing how to find it!
Definitely a young man's game cause as an older driver, I see no benefits to overseeing a system that's still in the learning stages. Just too much stress imo. I'd be giving up my biggest benefit of being a Tesla owner, the stress free driving. Long highway trips remain the primary usage for either system. Still, I enjoyed the video and learned quite a bit.
Frankly, I don't see FSD getting government approval until our road system markings are more software friendly. The variables right now are rediculous as we can't even have our emergency vehicles give off a signal to indicate their presence. All it takes is a tiny electronic module attached to the roof.....dah. Software can do a lot but basic crap like that is a no brainer. I haven't heard one whisper of any government plans to do anything to promote an FSD system, any system. When Elon doesn't even get an invite to the president's meeting on EV's, it makes two things obvious, they hate Musk and their dumb as shit. I'm pretty sure they were afraid he'd dominate the meeting which, I'm afraid, is probably true as Musk doesn't play well with dummies. "10K no way" is my mantra in regard to FSD. Nice idea folks and all very futuristic but it ain't gonna happen.

It is possible to use openpilot on a non-electronically steerable car. Basically, you just need to start hacking together mechanical parts. There are efforts to do this. BUT - you will end up spending much more of your time (assuming you value your time) than just buying even a cheap honda/toyota with the right hardware.
As a professional driver myself for the past 20 years I am not a fan of FSD. That said I do enjoy it on long distance road trips. Driving on Ontario highways is my job, as you may or may not know highway 401 is the busiest highway in North America and there is a crash on it on average 1 every few hours from simple bumper taps to fatalities. One thing I find with autopilot is after you get comfortable using it you tend to not be as alert as you should be. I think FSD is a great idea for many drivers as I see many many bad drivers on the road every single day. It will eventually make things better and safer on the road but that I think is still at least 10 or more years away. I love my Tesla but I have one without autopilot a 2014 Tesla model S 90 and it's a great car but I'm glad I have to drive it. Its very enjoyable to drive. The retro fit autopilot for other cars is a great idea and a good price for what it is. Thank you for the video it was nice to see how others are advancing with this technology.
Yeah autopilot is just lane centering and adaptive cruise control, which is on most higher end cars today and even $29k Hyundais(highway drive assist) Openpilot adds more then teslas autopilot, is the BEST on highway(better then autopilot, consumer reports has shown this, it's not meant for city streets). And only costs $2K
I’m surprised by this test. My wife’s 2022 rouge drives clearly marked roads just as good as these two. I thought Tesla was way better than this test shows.
People overestimate how much torque autopilot requires. Its really a tiny bit of force u need for the nag to go away, but only do it in one direction, not a move back and forth
So OpenPilot is just a cruise control? If all it does is keep you in the lane and maintain speed Not sure what the comparison here is since fsd is much more than that
Loooool, cringe… it’s basically enhancing crappy OE “lane keeping” (paint-bouncing/dancing-in-lane) that manufactures have in all cars now. The point is you can make a crappy ‘lane keep assist’ system into a decent self driving cruise control. FSD isn’t even ‘fsd’ compared to openpilot when compared to how much you have to touch the wheel
Not sure why you would buy a cringe Tesla and get this cringe tech package when you can get literally any vehicle made within the last 5-7 years and get this unit for a fraction of the cost
@@FukU2222 I think you managed to watch the video wrong. Openpilot is the one you have to fully control except for straight roads, FSD drives itself everywhere, takes turns by itself, vertakes cars etc etc. Holding the wheel is a safety feature so you don't play games on your phone(because on FSD you can, unlike on openpilots laneassist thingy)
.@@LoganLeGrand I was hoping you were going to activate the new longitudinal model (on shanes fork) and show him it can slow down on curves and at stop at stop signs
I am pretty underwhelmed with Tesla's progress in 10 years of FSD software development. I'm NOT saying it's easy by any means but I wish someone else like Waymo would have entered the consumer FSD market using their unique approach with LIDAR. It's far smarter from all the videos I've seen. The tesla is so unsure of itself and easily confused. Not confidence building.
I am sorry, but I thought you were going to really do a comparison. When you compare you should use the best driver for both. You could of have a section for new users experience. The fact the guy said you will see more disenagements due to the fact we are both new at driving the others cars and software. Need a redo!!!

You can not buy FSD for $10k. You can pay for a Beta / Alpha of a hopefully eventually working FSD. That lie needs to stop being said. That money is an investment in the future with no real end date.
After 9 minutes and 13 seconds, I have concluded the Open Source is a pain in the ass at this point in its development. Call me when they have something substantial.
Watch the whole video before making conclusions. Open source is fantastic in a long road/highway setting. It’s trash in city. FSD is fantastic in long road/highway setting and very meh in city driving. If your main purpose for auto assistance driving is for long highway commutes then both are fantastic systems. If looking for something more holistic then yes FSD is better
Driving would be safer if everyone had a Tesla. Especially on autopilot. The cars would all hesitate, and be cautious. There'd still be accidents, but not as many and not many would be as deadly.
It'd be slow as hell, and they would freak out in many scenarios(especially construction zones) goofy. Openpilot is also safer, it reduces accidents. You don't understand teslas. Most teslas don't have FSD, FSD beta is an insane $12K option. Teslas have "autopilot" which doesn't do anything compared to this, autopilot is like Hyundais highway drive assist offered on $29k cars. Autopilot is just a lane centering and adaptive cruise control system, that's offered on almost every car today silly(like Hyundais). It's also old and nothing new, FSD is but is completely different and $12K, no comparison

AND you do not have to touch the steering wheel the whole time on openpilot.
this is how it work on all autopilot cars outthere aka Kona for example :) only Tesla is "special" and does not allow this.
Then you realize that someone made a fork of OpenPilot that supports Teslas...
Good. We shouldn't let Elon's servers crash us into things.
Outstanding move.
Tesla is the new apple, that's for sure.
Thank you for this information. Google searches have been useless when wondering how to get adaptive cruise control on Teslas. I might keep my eyes open on older used or salvage Teslas now.
Really?
That will be cheaper than their 15,000 FSD cost.
AND FSD COSTS 12K
AND HAVE TO BE APPROVED BY TESLA
I have gotten so used to OpenPilot that I can no longer do long drives without it. Stock systems tend to lose lane lines very easily in the rain and other bad visibility conditions where OP can handle those no problem. I once drove 85 mph in the worst rain possible using OP and had more trust then if I was driving because it could see the lanes better than me. I am now very very sad that I got a new Pilot 2023 and there is no cable for the new car. I have to wait until the new wire comes out so I can use it.
I wouldn’t mind having the option of Autopilot automatically re-engaging once you’re back centered in the lane after a steering intervention.
Isn't that a legal issue? I think here in the EU at least, self driving (or things like adaptive cruise control or lane keeping) have to disengage after a major intervention.
@@kaasmeester5903 I would think openpilot would run into that same legal issue though wouldn't they?
I am sold. Saving for this device starts today!
there are forks for comma that disable the torque limit on steering
Then you bump up against the steering controller's limit. And modifying that hard limit requires reprogramming that Comma does not endorse. (It can be very dangerous to screw up your steering in such a way as to where it might overpower a human's ability to override it.)
Amazing how technology changes almost daily
What’s the point of getting the 1TB over the lower storage open pilot device? Is the storage for storing video recordings or something?
Yes
Technology has grown quite a lot
No shit
@@n.g3627 what?
Thank you for doing this video. I learned quite a bit. I'm looking to adding Comma OpenPilot to my car.
It's better then teslas autopilot on the highway!
Just wanted to make corrections. 12:27 it cut the torque. That is due it poorly lateral tune. Toyota tss2 can achieve way higher torque. 12:27 looks like Honda torque. It hit the max limit because of the bad pi values
would you know if any of the forks permit the necessary torque? or is this against the fw mods
Thanks for the comparison!! Very much appreciated
That is very honest and direct. FSD is a definitely WAAAAAY ahead of OpenPilot and to be fair, FSD has a head start and more resources behind it.
Don't forget Tesla has 8 cameras surrounding the car plus sensors, while the Comma has wide angle forward only. That a huge limit for auto lane change and navigation.

Yeah autopilot is just lane centering and adaptive cruise control, which is on most higher end cars today and even $29k Hyundais(highway drive assist)
Openpilot adds more then teslas autopilot, is the BEST on highway(better then autopilot, consumer reports has shown this, it's not meant for city streets). And only costs $2K
How is the Comma OpenPilot working out for you these days?

I’m surprised by this test. My wife’s 2022 rouge drives clearly marked roads just as good as these two. I thought Tesla was way better than this test shows.
People overestimate how much torque autopilot requires. Its really a tiny bit of force u need for the nag to go away, but only do it in one direction, not a move back and forth
Andy, I haven't observed following distance adjustment having any influence when using FSD beta. Do you observe differences base on the setting?
But your comma ai is portable to any car practically
So OpenPilot is just a cruise control? If all it does is keep you in the lane and maintain speed
Not sure what the comparison here is since fsd is much more than that
Loooool, cringe… it’s basically enhancing crappy OE “lane keeping” (paint-bouncing/dancing-in-lane) that manufactures have in all cars now.
