I have 2021 RAV4 Hybrid with a Comma 2. The MPG thing is just because Openpilot guns it when going up hill. Toyota stock cruise does the same. I just take control when going up hill and I still get 37-38 average MPG. And if you use a popular fork, you can let the comma do all the steering even when cruise control isn't enabled.

Excellent video Gary! I thought the pacing of the video was great.
I’ve never used a comma device (car doesn’t support it, but working on getting my 2009 Yaris working with it) but have been following the project since the early days (2017ish)
Few bits of information from you - they have approx 15K customers, though many are on forks (sunny, frog etc) so they don’t have info from those device. But 15K is a good ballpark
Glad install was easy, they’ve spent a lot of time making that process better. FYI the OBD connection isn’t required any more and you should be able to remove it. Makes install easier too!
It’s wild that the automakers haven’t integrated this solution into their cars. It’s all open source and available to them, yet no progress.
Not braking for a stopped car is somewhat common issue. This should improve soonish with the new machine learning approach. I believe time to accelerate from stopped should be improved as well.
The forks are likely better in those areas too, so once you’re comfortable it’d be worth giving it a shot. It’s all software, you’re correct :)
Correct the 3X came out August last year. They’re not currently limited by the processing power of the 3X, so I’d be surprised if a new version comes out next year ( but who knows! After all they don’t make any money from software )
Like you said, the older devices can still work with community managed forks of the software. Lots of people are still using the Comma Two.
I’m really hoping they explode in popularity soon :) especially with the ease of install and value add for the price, seems like a no brainer.
Great video once again, keep it up

First of all wow thank you for all of your thoughts and taking time to watch the video I feel like as more people see this video they will be able to get some value from the comments section. I’m definitely open to looking into the other forks, I just really wanted to see what the out of the box experience was like. I’m going to include this in another video but I wanted say that I’m with you, I hope they explode in popularity as well and while I think they go above and beyond to give us all the super inside baseball type details when they do updates and such I think they would benefit greatly from having someone market for them in a more straightforward way that can display all the amazing things the device can do and not bog them down with every little detail. That said I know they’re a small crew and they’ve done an incredible job with what they have and I’ll do what I can to help spread the word! Thank you for your kind words about the video!!

@@GaryCantrell Yeah honestly super impressive what they've done with 10-20 people (might be 30ish now). Their blog has a bunch of good info too, and they do blog posts for new releases, so check that out when the next release is ready (within couple of months hopefully)

Ditto everything that Andy said. I transitioned to using SunnyPilot about 6 months ago and really like the additional features (like the option to maintain the steering control if you don't have CC active).

I've had a Comma 2/Comma 3 with our 2021 Prius Prime since May of 2021. Almost 60K miles with OpenPilot.
When I first got it my wife wasn't enthused about the money I spent. Now she won't drive a car without it.
We just leased a Hyundai Ioniq 5 and I installed a 3x as soon as they had their Black Friday sale. The install (software) wasn't nearly as smooth on the Hyundai as it was on the Toyota (I had to use a special fork), but I got it to work.
Bottom line: if your car is supported, IMO it's totally worth it! I've rented a couple of Tesla's and I think OpenPilot is better than AutoPilot.

I’m glad to hear you got your wife hooked on it! I’m hoping mine will warm up to it. 60k is a lot miles on it and I feel better in my purchase hearing that you’ve got a lot of longevity with it. Thank you so much for sharing and watching!!!

Did you run the cable down to the OBD port by going behind the SRS airbag? I just got a 3x and just hooked mine up quickly without running the wires nicely. Looking for advice! Thanks for the video!

    • @GregMeece

Mine does! Once she got used to it she decided she never wanted another vehicle that didn't have it. It was one of the deciding factors in our decision to lease an Ioniq 5 (although for some reason OpenPilot didn't recognize the car's fingerprint - I had to install a fork).
My wife is a forensic nurse (Google it - it's probably NOT what you think), and often has to do exams at all hours. She's very thankful to have it driving home at like 3:00 AM.
