    🐒 If the monkey in the Catherine of Aragon portrait was native to the New World I wonder if it could also have been a subtle reminder of her birth family's influence and power, especially when compared to Anne's more modest one!

      Cats were not really kept as pets back then. They were more considered working animals used to keep house and stores free of mice.

      Yes... about that... it was standard procedure for executioners to keep the clothes of their victims (at least the outer layers) as payment (so in addition to the money they got from the person about to be executed). So... yeah... imagine that the executed queens were then undressed by the executioners and maybe, just left there for a while. They were also horrible at burying their victims. They put Anne Boleyn in an arrows' chest, Jane Grey was left for hours on the scaffold until permission was obtained to bury her. I get that in Anne Boleyn's case a pardon was expected, as everyone thought executing a queen was insane, but didn't they plan beyond that? And I know we're told not to judge the past by the standards of the present, but IDK... some things are just disgustingly barbaric and cruel. It wasn't enough they killed innocent people, they also had to humiliate their victims afterwards. They don't show you this stuff in films.

    I wouldn't be surprised if the 'bread' fed to the lap dogs was mixed with large amounts of meat drippings, sauces (gravy) or milk. I don't think they could have survived on bread alone.

    • @tessat338
      @tessat338 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Carriages weren't really so much of a big thing for royalty then. They weren't sprung like 18th and 19th century carriages and so were really jolting and uncomfortable to ride in, especially over a long distance. They were more like wagons. While traveling, most people in the court rode horses or rode in litters, a sort of chair slung on poles between two horses.

    • @Kaylee-Renee
      @Kaylee-Renee 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      As babies spider monkey's are cute and alot of fun but that doesn't last once they go through puberty.
      My friend lived with the owner of a wild life sanctuary and a wee spider monkey was rejected by it's mother and the other spider monkeys so they hand raised him.
      He was adorable and would ride on the dogs back between the sanctuary and their house up the hill.
      One he was old enough he would be reintroduce with other spider monkeys.
      I can see why people think they would be wonderful pets because at the start they are if you understand how to care for them but few people think about the future and how unpredictable a monkey can be.
      As much as I loved the times I spent with little tooku I'm glad the goal was always reunion and not domestication as a pet.

    I have always wanted to learn about Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard's pet dogs and I was reading The Other Boleyn Girl and The Boleyn Inheritance yesterday which reminded me of them. The books themselves don't make much mention of them, Purkoy's only appearance in The Other Boleyn Girl is a brief mention from one of the 1536 chapters where a character states that "they would have interrogated Purkou the dog if he was still alive!". Reading that really reignited my interest in this subject, so this video is perfectly timed!

    Would be stoked to see a follow up, with the 'working animals' & the Royal menagerie -- the Tudors & Stuarts were crazy-fond of hawking & hunting; I read that Elizabeth hunted every other day - also, that while aristocrats & royalty could hunt ahorse, the middling affluent merchant folks & 'new-money'-types, like Shakespeare (son of a prosperous glover) could only hunt on foot...

    Very cool video, Dr.Kat!! I am absolute huge animal lover. My family is American Midwestern Irish Catholic and my confirmation name when I was a practicing Catholic is Francis Lucille after Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Lucille respectively. Francis is the patron Saint of animals and those who care for them.
    I myself have adopted many dogs and cats throughout my lifetime. They're very special little beings whom I love very much and provided me with much joy, comfort, companionship and the deepest love. ❤
    Where I reside now in my beachy town in Florida, I am apart of an organization that helps to feed, provide medical care and hopefully a loving and happy home to many of our feral cat population. There are so many colonies of cats on the island. 🌴🐈‍⬛🐱🐈❤
    This was such a fascinating video on a topic near and dear to my heart. I would love hear another video on more animals in history.

    Other than outrage that any canine should be denied meat for its diet, I've found this to be a really interesting video on early modern pets. I also love that Queen Victoria had a little spaniel named Dash who died soon after she became Queen. She buried him herself at Adelaide Cottage, Windsor and his epitaph reads: Here lies DASH, the favourite spaniel of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, in his 10th year. His attachment was without selfishness, His playfulness without malice, His fidelity without deceit. READER, if you would live beloved and die regretted, profit by the example of DASH. We should all be so lucky to have a companion so beloved. My best beloved pet was a service dog named Jack who died in my arms in his 17th year. It is my belief, not shared by all, that pets and service animals, especially dogs, are essential to living a full life. They remind us to care for others as they care for us, that love is transitory and that being such must be held precious and without guile. So was Jack.🐶🐕

    Very interesting video. Although I have been an active fan of the Tudor period much of my life, I did not know very much about the situation with companion animals. Or animals at court, in general. I did understand that there were multiple roaming dogs kept in palaces to eat certain leftovers, and to keep the area clean of food that had been thrown on the ground.
