i think it transcended the hobby aspect, when some of these cards are worth more than houses. Sports collecting, comics, pokemon, artworks, bitcoin are some fun alternatives to gold for the wealthy to hedge inflation.
@@mcap8396 to me there’s nothing special about a super tall lengthy guy (much taller than his peers) playing bball..if Wemby played with guys his height , he would be good still but nothing special
You have to be able to see greatness when it's starring you in the face. The test of a player's greatness (one you didn't expect) is if you're rooting for the other team and he knocks your team out of contention year after year. There are some key attributes champions share: starter, team captain, leader in some statistical category, always in the lineup and rarely gets injured, and helps his team win more than 62% of their games.
Understand the concept, of what cards will go up, but there’s a lot of Hall of Fame players worth buying & owning and keeping, not just the goats. I think the collectors appreciate the HOFs more so than investors , whom want goats. Especially fan favorites. Guys like Manu ginobili sell very well, and have pretty high demand, compared to a low supply.
I think part of your arguement for hof players from the 80s and 90s is its well known to be the junk wax era , outside of jordan novodys cards are worth anything because of it all base as well . Now theres serial numbersn, sp , ssp , case hits , 1 of 1s ao its impossibel to say vs tbose cards , they just maken different cards now vs then
So insightful, guys! I'd highly recommend this to anyone just getting their feet wet with collecting sports cards. It's more than just loving a player or loving a team... It's important to keep the big picture and an overall strategy in mind.

If you do players I’m interested in what you think of Messi & Ronaldo etc. And what you think of the soccer card markets future. Special mention American players.
I find this to be very easy. Geoff nor anyone else knows what will come from the future card market. The only pmes making money are people selling not collecting and those pumping out content with ads. Buy what you like, stay in budget and enjoy your cards and the journey collecting them. Geoff is the same guy who gave people horrible advice on "what to buy". No matter what it is in life, you should NEVER need to be told what to buy.
I’m curious about what happens to cards once a superstar player retires. For example Messi and Ronaldo will retire fairly soon. Does it make sense to wait because their cards drop in price once they retire or do the cards of superstars rise at retirement for whatever reason. Maybe the lower end cards drop and the premium cards climb. I’d also like to see an analysis of key sets and player card performances over time. 86 fleer etc. What are the comparable sets for the different sports.
I would say for Baseball Shohei Ohtani will be remembered and collected 100 years from now like Mickey Mantle. What I’m unsure of is what type of card will be the most collectible of and sought after in that time. Obviously his rookie cards, but which one and will it still be the refractors? If so which ones are the best to speculate on? What about the classic base without all the glitz and sparkle?
Here's a novel idea, how about talking about COLLECTING CARDS, i know it's difficult to not talk or think about the money aspect but lets hear more about what this hobby was built on and that's collecting whether it's your favorite player team or sport. I wanna hear more of that.

The 3pt shot has kind of broken the NBA. Plus the fact that less and less people have cable (aka the ability to watch the NBA) in the first place. Ultra modern NBA cards falling off a cliff in terms of popularity feels very organic, let alone the whole hype cycle/cliff that young players like Zion, Ant Man, Wemby all are subject to.

Lamar Jackson having 4 or 5 MVPs and Drew Brees having zero is insanity!
