So, all I have to do is predict the next second round draft pick that will win back to back MVP's, a championship and a finals MVP 6 years from now. What amazing, incredible, insightful strategy. You should open a shop.

Let’s not put the cart in front of the horse. Fanatics WANTS to grow the hobby 10x. Fanatics bought high during the hype and the hobby is already having 10 times the people like Geoff Wilson leaving the hobby after it isn’t the money train everyone was hoping it would be….including Fanatics.

Great video!! Let's not forget.... each year better patch auto will continue to produce. How many sick auto patch can you pick up? For modern cards, if it's not a rookie year.... buyers don't care which year of the card. They will only chase sick patch auto. Enjoy your collection and Control your buying..... Don't fall into the loop of expense.
What's going to be the best rookie card (product wise) to hold from this era? It sounds like if you're excluding NT and Flawless, that rarity isn't as much of a factor as you'd think.
A cards photo especially with topps say Vince Carter with his iconic dunk photo matter to me I'm a hawks fan like I said before and Josh Smith has a pic in I believe 09-10 topps chrome mines a ref /500 but he's dunking literally over Steve Nash! One of the coolest photos I've seen this was before Ja n his missed dunk but it is terrible for Nash fans lol!!
Right now this is just gonna be me, me being me. As a person who owns graded tickets, cards, toys, comics and magazines. One thing that really stuck out to me in cards was that 52 Mantle. When i tried to buy that 1st edition charizard pokemon, the guy explained it as the 52 Mantle of pokemon. So an investing strategy i've started using is go after the 52 Mantle of whatever it is you are into. My recent big buys was with that mentality. An afa 80 Optimus Prime transformers a afa 85 just sold for over 30k, a psa 8 Kobe 81 point game ticket, pop 9 only 1 psa 9 exist, 2 WWE immaculate Bloodline 7 auto booklets, it features the hottest faction in wrestling in 25 years, Roman Reigns is approaching close to 1000 days as champion, only now is WWE getting high end products that's common in the major sports and as the Rocks cousin is already expected to have a big hollywood career when he chooses to go that route and 2 days ago i purchased a cgc 5.5 Marilyn Monroe 1st copy playboy. A 9.2 just sold for over 120k. And anyone whose wondering what's the pwcc , goldin for those type of collectibles, there's already 2 that i know of that's around.
one thing about this video I really agree with is that cultural impact is a big part of why certain player's cards go for so much. Investible players are as memorable off the field as the are on the field.
Hey Geoff & T-Pot, this video is absolutely fascinating. The one player I would 10000% add to your narrowed down targeted list would be Jerry West. In my opinion, MJ because of his brand and sneakers, Jackie because he broke the color barrier and is celebrated every year with every player wearing #42 are guaranteed to be remembered for generations to come. I add Jerry West because of his legendary playing career and career as a GM. I don't think anyone will ever dominated both on the court and in the front office like Jerry did. Now throw in he is the NBA logo..... Thank me later :)
Your investment strategy is still based on reselling. I’d suggest value added reselling. Hard to explain in a text but it’s were money is made. Fantasy football impact - most kids play or participate in fantasy football over other sports and have more player knowledge than other sports. This is why it’s growing and has biggest dips and rises. I’m concerned this becomes a gateway to Gambling. 13:10 you mention rookies are overrated and i agree. You see why buying into the right breaks can be so profitable? Appreciate the insights. Enjoying my he evolution
Gambling and sports are like milk and cereal. Instead of trying to separate them, I think the most responsible approach is to try to get the most value from your gambling dollars as you can. Betting on a regular season game being on one end of the spectrum and playing in a fantasy keeper league on the other. Collecting cards would be somewhere in the middle. You're not going to get the same rush from watching any particular game while playing keeper fantasy as you would sitting in the sports book at Caesar's, but you're not going to get killed financially either. Collecting cards can be a gateway for some and a respite for others. For me, it's the latter.
@@u_s_a_cards I appreciate there are so many ways to enjoy the hobby I do think hobby is closer to gambling than investing. All are statical and have statical approaches. I love buying team breaks of specific rookie and products then maximize the hits with grading or knowing the best platform and or buyers. I add value and it’s the card buyer investor that’s my primary customer.
@@ZiggyNo The hobby has always been gambling in some respects. People who put up their 2006 matt leinart Vince Young Jay Cutler rookies in 2006 and their byron leftwich and carson palmer rookies from 2003 sure are dissapointed.
Credit where credit is due, this was a great episode. I always enjoy T-pot's takes on sports and the card market. While I don't believe that the majority of cards can ever be considered true investments per definition, it's very solid advice to warm people about the risks of putting big money into rookies. Buying players not talked about but with good potential, ones without 6 championships baked into their prices, is a great strategy.
This was really good, kinda felt like just 2 guys talking cards, ideas, next plays. Sometimes all the "schtick" and "flash" just isnt need when the discussions are this thought out. Great job...look forward to another like this!
Great analysis! A question I've wanted to ask T-Pot or Geoff is if there are any similarities in investing in cards and startups, from the standpoint of VC's always trying to find the "home run" or unicorn type potential deals to offset losses? It's something a lot of VC's often talk about and I was just curious if either ever uses a similar strategy in card investing. And if so, what might that look like?
Football isnt international.... It might be growing (if thats possible) in the states, but a lot of the recent growth in the card market is international collectors. Basketball, soccer, etc have higher ceilings, baseball/football have the higher floor
I really feel you missed one in the long term baseball world. Clemente. He is super relevant in the Hispanic community, and always will be. Also, one hell of a player! I’d add him to long term investment list 100%.
Wayne Gretzky should be on the goat list if you're collecting goats in multiple sports. I can't imagine a time where he is NOT recognized as the best hockey player of all time. Ovechkin may get the goal record but Gretzky's point record will probably never be eclipsed.
I agree with Geoff in regards to Mahomes. Mahomes is priced as if he's going to be Brady, Manning, Montana, etc. and 'tho has a great resume of proven performance, but feels priced on projection... "tomorrow's prices today" rates that sellers are asking due to the FOMO of regret selling too low. This same pricing disposition I have for spec investing on prospects is similar to going to Vegas and wagering on the futures of sports teams such as betting the Angels win the World Series, Browns win the Super Bowl, Ducks win the Super Bowl or Trail Blazers win the NBA... it might happen, but the high payout odds say otherwise. However with cards, you have a good 1-5 year window of development ('tho many give up after year one and some stay around through year three before giving up on a player realizing projected potential. We've all seen advanced billed studs become duds. We've all seen naysayers in the hobby proclaim "but this time it's different!" backing their touted generational talent they're wagering on. If you've been collecting since the 1980's there's decades of proven data on how players fall out of favor either they're good, maybe even making the Hall of Fame (like Frank Thomas for example) but collector's move onto the next big thing. Like how men drop their wives to seek out younger girls, there's a lure to something that's potentially better than the known quality in hand. There's so many names we remember and cards we have which once were the darlings of the hobby. It feels every decade in every sport there's maybe 3-5 players every 10 year time-frame who can be called "The GOAT of their playing era" and a lot of mediocrity and failures within that decade. Sports Card investing sometimes is more like MILK than it is WINE. Successful investors know when to sell, set win goals and loss limits and much like playing poker, it's not the number of hands you win or lose, but what you leave the table with. Milk has an expiration date and spoils. Wine ages gracefully in time with a longterm appreciation. What I do like, personally as a solid investment due to FMV's right now are buying the enshrined HOF'ers in Basketball, Baseball, Football and Soccer's AUTOGRAPH CARDS which are often priced under $10 and some big names like a Joe Montana, you can get a Leaf AUTO for $50. I feel these are players that are now cemented in the Hall fo Fame within the history of their respective sports. There's going to be a market for all of these players as collectors often gravitate towards recognized "best in the game" (HOFers) players. This is especially true for living but aged HOFers who when they end up deceased, can be sold on news for high multiples or held knowing that no more autograph cards are going to be made (unless sticker autos like what Topps does with Stan Musial). If you review the HOFers in the Naismith Basketball HOF you'll find so many are still alive and many are so low priced, it feels like steals of deals with low risk.
Mahomes already surpassed Peyton Manning. Next up on his list is surpassing Joe Montana in terms of Super Bowl wins and after that it will be trying to surpass Tom Brady. Never forget Brady did not win his 4th super bowl until 14 years in. Mahomes got his first 3 super bowls 7 ears in where as Brady did it 5 years in.
I know you mentioned for basketball Jordan & other Dream Team guys. Who do you like who is already good but still can rise to another level like all-star starter level? I’m thinking Anthony Edwards, Jalen Brunson, DaAron Fox.. or are they too hyped already? Who else do you like?
They're super cheap and Rui will eventually get a bigger role. Anything is possible but given the fact he is the best Japanese player in history and not even in his prime yet he is likely a good investment. Prices are so low at the least you should be able to get your money back if you decide to get out of his cards at some point
@@robglobal1 he's had four years to prove himself and hasn't done anything. He's already 25 which is old by NBA standards and he was in the same draft class as Ja so unless he starts going on a Steph Curry terror he's just going to bounce around the league. There's a reason his cards are so cheap and the Wizards couldn't wait to dump him off.
@@carolinatarheels7903 i have a sheet ton of Rui and you are correct. Rui was expected to be a project from day one (see the Heir to the thrown crown royale diecuts comparing him to Giannis). Rui is very strong, great wing span and big hands, but he doesn't have a great first step, weak lateral movement and very low motor. He's not fast enough to drive by players so he settles for turn around jumpers. He has the body to play defense, but he doesn't have a good defensive IQ and is very reactive to pump fakes. Also Rui doesn't have the media support to pump his cards. When he dunked on AD, nobody cared versus Ja Morant getting so much attention for attempted dunks. Rui is not a guy to invest in long term, he doesn't have the talent, or hype to be valuable in the future.
What I’ve learned is to follow my gut on anything other people are telling me from their gut. If it’s informational about print runs or trends I’ll listen but if I listened to a lot of these guys I’d be broke.
I’ve never met a single collector who doesn’t think manning is significantly undervalued. So what stops people from buying them which would naturally increase demand? Basically actions aren’t following the undervalued sentiment. Maybe a high grade contender auto sale would increase demand.
Only took me ten minutes to turn this off as Tpott the soccer expert has no clue that Haaland can’t play for any other country no matter how long he lives in England It’s one of the most basic international rules and shows that these two have ZERO business discussing soccer
Disclaimer: I have a few 50-$100 Trask cards. Kyle hasn't done anything to make his cards valuable and he doesn't seem to be well liked by the media or fans (people calling him Kyle "Trash", etc.). If he gets the starting role in Tampa Bay, I'd suggest selling enough of what you have to break even. If he doesn't get the starting role, pick 1-2 cards of his you really like and sell the rest. There is not enough hobby interest in Kyle Trask to keep his prices from tanking if he doesn't start and play well this season.
Lol the guy doesn’t even know the most basic soccer rules but sure I guess he’s smart to ppl drinking the geoff kool aid - guy knows nothing cherry picks falling knives hoping to god he got the bottom correct - he is BAD at cards
I would argue the point that you said you didn't put any steroid Era players on your list, Griffeys whole carrer was the steroid Era, not saying he ever took them, not saying he didn't, there's arguments for both sides, I don't think anyone wants to think he touched them, but he's definitely from the era.
I think so to, but it gets shilled so bad I stopped even looking at them. I was in a group that bought him and we just stopped because 100% of his eBay sales are shilled by a group in the Philippines and eBay as well as the sellers, just allow it. I watched a national treasure get shilled over 30 times consigning by probstein. I told them about it saying, “hey, you guys are letting the same person shill this card every auction. You’re not blocking him after he wins and doesn’t pay?! They said, go ahead and tell eBay.
All the commentary around sports cards is hyper focused to the moment in time. It’s extremely reactionary. 10 years from now, we will likely have experienced a ton of different Ebs and flows. We 100% will go back toward what is out today. Right now it’s, all about, buy the goats. People will be saying “avoid the goats” within 5 years. People will be saying, “vintage is slow money” within 5 years. But to think, “this is the way it is now forever, is just short sighted.
Football is fun but players get injured so often it's frustrating and u will lose ur ass in the short term but some guys if u believe in em like I did in McCafferey for instance then if u hold long term u could do alright but yea it's a risky sport compared to basketball n baseball but I'm a hooper thru n thru so I collect/invest in basketball! Got a ton of Lions and guys like Megatron or other retired players Barry, Isaac Bruce, j Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, Adrian Peterson etc...but I love my hoops although I played FB love it as well but I just know everything and everyone when it comes to the NBA!! My AI and Kobe collection, or since im a huge ATL hawks fan I got guys like J Terry, Josh Smith, Joe Johnson, Collins, Hunter, n of Trae of course!! I have a huge PC of him 300+ cards i think just sold a 20-21 kaboom (sad bout it) and I believed in him when everyone wrote him n the hawks off in the playoffs but he carried em all year beat the heat to win play-In and even pushed it to 6 games against a tough Boston team gotta give him credit I mean like u said where tf was luka yet Trae is 1/3 the price or 1/4 the price!! They really need to build around him he's shown he's made for the moment how r fans doubting this man it's insane!! ICE TRAE GANG!!! They need scoring down low and maybe a couple more knock down shooters cuz they can get streaky but hope he gets the money and stays in ATL plus he's so undervalued already!! Also I've been a huge Air Miles believer and next yr he will be a all-star if u forgot he was scoring 20 pts + and the highlights were every game!! One of if not the best dunker and finisher in the league!! Should of won Most improved player with a 10 pts a game increase and is so so underrated n u see how bad Charlotte was without him of course they were tanking maybe but he's a huge piece on that team he's their best all-around player for sure n love to see him on ATL it would be a lock in the playoffs!!! Either them or Detroit would be fine with me!!! Forget the drama he is a good kid deserves a 2nd chance we all f up!!!
This year market is flooded with so many products with same players. also they are flooding with same movie or cartoon or marvel etc year over year lololololollol hahagaha
I hope fanatics gets rid of pink parallels who likes em? Not many they just don't look good n there's no color match that I know of but yea rid the pink!! Also Griffey is to baseball what AI is to basketball in my opinion but I think AI is to cheap for how iconic and culture changing he was just a legend!!
Josh Allen and Joe Burrow prices already include SB wins.... I wouldn't buy any of them...at these prices. Trevor Lawrence as well... his prices are high high.
He just keeps hoping that 2021 will return so he can cash out and it’s never going to happen. People like this don’t grow the hobby, they just annoy people out of it.
Lebrons prices are far too high and as the delusional narratives die down and people realize the truths as more and more youtubers etc expose the lies prices will drop. Personally i would never invest in the most overrated athlete of all time. Invest in true goats like Wilt, Magic, Bird, Shaq, Jordan, Russell Kareem. I leave out Kobe caus hes still currently overvalued and Duncan because people will likely never come around to wanting his cards due to how boring his game was although i think hes criminally undervalued.
You are so wrong here, US should be ashamed of not enjoying soccer as we should be. Hopefully if one day US learns how to play soccer then people will start collecting.
@@luimarthroman1458 America only likes sports where the athletes are mutants. NBA and NFL require people in the 90% percentile of height AND athleticism.
My best advice is to NOT take investing advice from someone who is still "learning". What Geoff is saying, is the strategy he showed us is no longer useful.
Your strategy is to buy low numbered iconic cards. I’ll use your Drew Brees example. Only five iconic cards are available so only five people can own this card. So it’s not gonna happen for large majority of us. I realize people will pick other players but there are only so many of the iconic players and their cards. I hope I made this clear.
Payton rivals Brown as greatest running back of all time in most discussions and his cards are so much more affordable and attainable currently. Lots of upside still in his cards. In addition newer younger collectors are aware of his name as he still appears regularly in modern sets, so as the newer collectors gravitate towards vintage players he will be at the forefront of those collectors looking to get into retired Goats
I love that last idea that if an influencer has made an amazing piece of content centered around a specific card that an app out there could tie that video or clip to the card within the app. This would be awesome and could create a win win scenario for influencers and card collectors as a whole.
I can see the value of this podcast for new collectors, but this is collecting 101. Also, your mahomes take is 100% wrong! A third Super Bowl won’t help his value? Only 4 qb’s have 3 or more super bowls.
Vintage sports says I'm a real estate consultant.... please stop, cards are not investments... in simple, you are a wrong. Not trolling, real talk... just stop.
Cards might not be the best investment, but they are still an investment. Traditionally, it's a lot easier making money in the housing market, but plenty of people are profiting off sports cards.
@@jasonabernethy8424 I run a shop, I understand you can make money at this.... I sell only cards no wax and make money... if you consider high end cards as an investment, like art, then maybe... but let's ask Warren if cards are investments... don't be stupid tho...
@@vintagesportsshack Warren also says gold and bitcoin aren't investments either, Although high end vintage stuff is an alternative, but the stuff Geoff buys, high end numbered stuff of current players, people will just get burned in the long run
Geoff - you start out with this atomic bomb announcement that you don’t think it’s a good idea any longer to invest in active players for anything but short-term flips, and then you spend the next 30 minutes contradicting your own advice and describing all the active players and scenarios where it’s still worth investing
I said Mahomes specifically because he has already reached the mountaintop (2 Super Bowls) and I don’t think winning 1 more Super Bowl helps his card prices much, whereas if he doesn’t make the next couple of Super Bowls he has downside. So with him I just felt the best investment window has passed and you are better off fining the next guy. The only way Mahomes goes up a bunch further IMO is if he eventually challenges Brady for the record of the most Super Bowls.
Investments do not equal stagnation. Card investments are no different than traditional financial investments in which strategies are formulated and changed based on the market and/or external environment
This dude doesn't even know sports or the players but we're supposed to believe he understands investing in it? That's like giving real estate investment advice when you've never bought real estate before.
Leveraging STORIES helped Steve Jobs to change the music industry forever and increase Apple's share price by 5000% in 6 years, attaching a story to a card will get people attached to a moment, player or team.
I dont think soccer will ever be the next big thing.. it will continue to be low grade on sports cards collectors… I’m going bold here and could be CONTROVERSIAL but soccer is not an American thing… south american people in the USA are not rich for the most part… so they love soccer but cant buy sports cards… the big money americans will buy big baseball, football, basketball.. and I think HOCKEY.. especially vintage in al these areas… dont believe soccer will be the place long term...
The Mahomes take is so dumb. No other good young QB has even one Super Bowl Ring and only MVP is Lamar who one once and fell off. Every young QB besides Mahomes is overpriced because they have accomplished nothing and Mahomes has plenty of time to accomplish more.

Race doesn't really matter in male sports cards, if you can play you can play. Now WNBA, NWSL, etc is a whole different story. Why is Breanna Stewart's PSA 10 going for 3k and Aj'a Wilson's rookie PSA going for $700 when they are both 4x Allstars and MVPs? Yes Breanna Stewart has 1 more ring and 2 more Finals MVPs, but A'ja is a year younger and has one more MVP than Stewart. These are the type of questions that helped my understanding of the hobby more than anything else.
Without confusing the Hobby. Simply chase the sport that EVERYONE watches. Football gets significantly more views than almost all the others put together in America. FOOTBALL is obviously and easily your best bet, specially Brady Rookies etc :) Jordan is the Goat in his sport and his highly populated Rookie is worth a very pretty penny. Brady has more Rookies but most all except a few are Printed to 2,000 or less so it’s safe to say most are low pop when you look at graded cards
Also, not to be a negative commenter but……. Soccer has tried so hard to blow up and it’s really gone no where. Soccer prob isn’t a good bet except maybe Messi and Ronaldo as far as current goes

Don't worry....bring the kids to Geoff and he will pack battle them
@@ZiggyNo The hobby has always been gambling in some respects.
Doing great bruhs. We all love you guys. ❤
Great question, maybe that should be its own episode!

Great discussion overall around the strategy, I do agree on the larger cultural impact that transcends beyond sport.

Football isnt international.... It might be growing (if thats possible) in the states, but a lot of the recent growth in the card market is international collectors. Basketball, soccer, etc have higher ceilings, baseball/football have the higher floor
Aside from basketball, international buyers are small..most hobby folks are in the USA…football is king in the US
I really feel you missed one in the long term baseball world. Clemente. He is super relevant in the Hispanic community, and always will be. Also, one hell of a player! I’d add him to long term investment list 100%.
Sensational video fellas.

Teapot, do you think Rui Hachimura Cards are undervalued or plateau??
Dude sucks and is way overrated. Geoff only hypes cards he has a ton of so he can dump them on unsuspecting 13 year olds at card shows.
They're super cheap and Rui will eventually get a bigger role. Anything is possible but given the fact he is the best Japanese player in history and not even in his prime yet he is likely a good investment. Prices are so low at the least you should be able to get your money back if you decide to get out of his cards at some point
@@robglobal1 👏 👏 👏
@@robglobal1 he's had four years to prove himself and hasn't done anything.

I know you guys are talking about individual cards, but how about complete sets.
I’ve never met a single collector who doesn’t think manning is significantly undervalued. So what stops people from buying them which would naturally increase demand? Basically actions aren’t following the undervalued sentiment. Maybe a high grade contender auto sale would increase demand.
Only took me ten minutes to turn this off as Tpott the soccer expert has no clue that Haaland can’t play for any other country no matter how long he lives in England
It’s one of the most basic international rules and shows that these two have ZERO business discussing soccer
What are your thoughts on Trask? Seen you bought the 1/1 couple months back, are you still investing in him?
Disclaimer: I have a few 50-$100 Trask cards.
Kyle hasn't done anything to make his cards valuable and he doesn't seem to be well liked by the media or fans (people calling him Kyle "Trash", etc.). If he gets the starting role in Tampa Bay, I'd suggest selling enough of what you have to break even. If he doesn't get the starting role, pick 1-2 cards of his you really like and sell the rest. There is not enough hobby interest in Kyle Trask to keep his prices from tanking if he doesn't start and play well this season.

Jaren Jackson Jr I think has some upside
I think so to, but it gets shilled so bad I stopped even looking at them. I was in a group that bought him and we just stopped because 100% of his eBay sales are shilled by a group in the Philippines and eBay as well as the sellers, just allow it.
I watched a national treasure get shilled over 30 times consigning by probstein. I told them about it saying, “hey, you guys are letting the same person shill this card every auction. You’re not blocking him after he wins and doesn’t pay?! They said, go ahead and tell eBay.
Fun to collect, but you know cards aren’t actually investments, right?
All the commentary around sports cards is hyper focused to the moment in time. It’s extremely reactionary.
10 years from now, we will likely have experienced a ton of different Ebs and flows.
We 100% will go back toward what is out today.
Right now it’s, all about, buy the goats.
People will be saying “avoid the goats” within 5 years.
People will be saying, “vintage is slow money” within 5 years.

ICE TRAE GANG!!! funny how basketball and football players get crushed for playoff performances but nobody cares Trout and Ohtani can't even sniff the playoffs.
Because people know that trout and ohtani are beasts. They still put up ridiculous numbers far and above peers.

Josh Allen and Joe Burrow prices already include SB wins.... I wouldn't buy any of them...at these prices. Trevor Lawrence as well... his prices are high high.
This Mahomes take of his is making him lose credibility in my eyes. There literally isn’t a safer athlete to invest in that’s active

Soccer is like the metric system -- it will never catch on in the US.
You are so wrong here, US should be ashamed of not enjoying soccer as we should be. Hopefully if one day US learns how to play soccer then people will start collecting.

I have no interest mostly in prospects.. thats just a gamble….. except for some QBs in football… like burrow, herbert, and allen
Zion? .....BUST! he's ogen 3.0!
Shoot Geoff, so you're saying that the Larry Bird Patch Auto from 22 Select I got from you I probably should have just vaulted....whoops. 🤦

New strategy? So you finally realized sports cards aren’t investments?
Investments do not equal stagnation. Card investments are no different than traditional financial investments in which strategies are formulated and changed based on the market and/or external environment
No way soccer becomes widely popular. The simple reason is that Americans don't have the patience for a slow game that doesn't play well on T.V.
