A little backstory to Mick Gordon and the Doom OST. When they hired Mick for the soundtrack id Software specifically told him they didn't want electric guitars (basically metal music) on the OST, since according to them it would've been too obvious, too blasé, they wanted something different. So Mick Gordon did a Mick Gordon and sampled literally everything else! The sounds you hear in the OST are sampled from a chainsaw, hedge trimmers, lawn mower, meat grinder, wood chipper, a microwave (not even kidding), etc., and then he threw the whole thing through a metric fuckton of filters (as you can see in the video). The guitar is only used to drive this diabolical mess of powertools and mayhem, so _technically_ he complied with id's demands AND created the most brutal fucking video game OST ever made.
BS. The only sample used in 2016 is a chainsaw from Doom '93, and it is being blended over guitar with a plugin. Lawnmower (from neighbor!) etc. were added in Eternal.
Todd McFarlane said that those who say yes don’t change the system. It really resonates here when human beings constantly are challenged with new problems and it’s interesting to see how we tackle them. Mick Gordon is phenomenal.
Mick is an absolute legend. Them: "Here are your constraints." Mick: 🤔🤔🤔⚠️⚠️😅😅😅😈😈😈 I have to imagine during the entire conversation, Mick is like "mhm, yep, sure, buckle uppppppp😂"
"I have no idea how to make something like this" Mick gave a presentation at a game dev conference going over it. It's on TH-cam and absolutely worth a watch
"This song feels like it's raising my blood pressure"... Play the game and your f%&King head will explode when you correlate the gameplay with the music... Now you know why Mick is considered a GOD among doomslayers.
Mick is such a legend, great song for a hell of a game. Been too long for me to remember specifics but iirc Bethesda really treated him very poorly working on the modern doom games, BGS farming L's as usual lately.
Bethesda Game Studios had nothing to do with this as they didn't develop it. id Software did. I'm guessing you meant Bethesda Softworks? They published this game.
That is an 8 string guitar. Basically just a regular guitar but with a longer scale length (usually between 26.5 and 28 inches) and 2 extra strings (7th string tuned to B and 8th tuned to F# in standard tuning).
There is a video that he breaks down how he makes this song and Doom songs and how he actually constructed them. How he did Doom 2016 vs Eternal. And also how the music actually interacts with the game is crazy.
mick is great, and his music fits perfectly w dooms gameplay. shame about his falling out w bethesda and ID. also since you’re a sonic fan, and enjoyed this you should check out sonic frontiers’ ost. specifically the titan fights. ‘undefeatable’ ‘find your flame’ ‘break through it all’ and ‘i’m here-revisited’ all super heavy songs with great vocals
i once played doom with the music off to see if anything would happen and i heard a knock at my window and he was there he said turn on the dam music i have never played it with it off ever since

A GDC talk, very fascinating even if you're not a musician. Man definitely knows his stuff
I'm a simple man. I see "BFG Division" - I click "BFG Division"

All strings were set to kill
Mick uses the Schecter Damien 9 pretty regularly
he also likes to use chainsaws and lawnmowers

Actually is Mayones Regius guitar. He is an endorser od this Polish guitar brand.
Mick Gordon isn't just musician. He is a genius
BeyerDynamic?!?! not only did you get to hear for the first time but you also got to hear for the first time.
This song to me represents anger and momentum. The heartbeat of rage, rip and tear until it's done.
i once played doom with the music off to see if anything would happen and i heard a knock at my window and he was there he said turn on the dam music i have never played it with it off ever since
This instrument is called a BFG SH - Big Fû¢&ing Guitar of HATE strings

Man the next Doom is going to suck without Mick...
