At time of filming I was running the winch at a PTO speed of 540 due to the translation issues with the owners manual. 540 is the max, running slower (as I do these days) is preferable in most cases.

Thank you! Overall the log was a little spaghetti-fied but think I can get good 8 or 10 foot sections. We may have to copy the Old Man's rod thru the loader arms technique when it comes time to get the butt log on the mill, the forks wouldn't lift it.
Thanks Dave! Sometimes I wish it had a slower speed option. Do you have a concrete pouring day scheduled? I was wondering how concrete prices are looking compared to a couple years ago.
@@southernadirondackoutdoors I know it's not a good idea but could you "ride the clutch" on the winch? Or if you used a snatch block on the log you could cut the speed in half; that would also double your pulling power. No idea about the concrete; timing OR pricing. GREAT video.
@@TheOldManAndTheSaw As you know, I am near Hud-son and when I took it in to get the cable replaced (they had to use angle grinders and torches to get the cable out) they checked the clutch and gave me the tisk tisk tisk for riding it. The snatch block is a good idea but I never remember to bring it with me.
Never knew that thing existed.. I guess you just drag them back to the sawmill from there? Do you use a log arch at all to keep them from dragging on the ground and getting the bark packed with dirt? I wonder about all that dirt dulling the saw blade once you get it on the mill.
We used to drag them all the way back to the sawmill, but recently converted a hay wagon to bring 5 or 6 back at a time. They usually sit for awhile before we get to milling so the rain gets most of the dirt off but occasionally we have to manually de-bark.
Yes, you are correct. The manual, which appears to be written by someone who speaks English as a third or fourth language, lists a number of degrees you can pull at an angle. I don't recall the number of degrees off the top of my head but I think it was around 20. In this video I am exceeding that by a wee bit😁. My snatch block was conveniently back in the tractor shed.
Sure can...I do my best to pick the best path for the log but sometimes it chooses its own path. My biggest oops (and most costly) was having the foot of the winch against a stump while winching in a log that got stuck behind another stump with cable under full tension, couldn't back the tractor up a bit to slowly release tension so I decide to give the release lever a solid kick which makes the cable spool go spinning getting the cable all twisted and kinked. Live and learn.
Only flaw in the video is sound editing. If you lower the sound of chainsaws and other machinery WAY DOWN, viewers won't have to chase volume control or mute button to hear your commentary but not be blasted out by loud engines.
I agree, using freebie windows video editor that only allows one volume setting per clip. I'll try more clip splitting between talking and sawing. On the other hand it does make the video more interactive🤣

Interesting, I've seen those log winches before, but I guess I've never seen one in action. Very cool!
It does come in handy especially if the log is in a position where you can't back the tractor up to.

You got that right! We took down a couple around the yard and chipped the branches...could smell it for days.

You should always winch in line with your tractor, never to the side. If the log is off to the side, you should use a redirect.

Be careful revving the RPMs up as you winch the log in. If you hit a stump or a root. Bad things can happen very quickly.

Thanks for watching...They sure were black flies but not too bad...chainsaw seems to keep them away but only when it's running!
Roll the log in front of the butt log out of the way before cutting! hard to watch!!
