    They're harmless yes but they do register on a Geiger counter and it's a fairly good tool for identifying them in flea markets and antique stores. You can also find clocks, watches, compasses, and ceramics as well.

      I have heard that, but I've never had one to try it. I've had some people in our store that would find things that would glow that I never imagined... right under my nose. There's some experts out there sniffing that co stuff out. You're probably one of them!

      They told the girls who made those war watches to pick the paint brushes.... It wasn't safe. The fact they have put it in mass consumption products should tell you everything you need to know about the elite. They are laughing. And they are psychopaths.

    Years ago I helped a friend clean out his grandfather's home after he had past. The man was probably the most neat and organized hoarder I have ever seen. He had tons of this stuff, all matching sets, some on display, some boxed up in what looked like original packaging. We didn't know what it was, my friend had made the decision to just get rid of it, as he was tasked with this responsibility, being the only member of the family left. So we took it all and put into the dumpster that he had rented. It was still early in the cleanup, so the dumpster was relatively empty, and we walked it all in through the door on the end and stacked it all. We weren't necessarily gentle, but we definitely didn't just meet the boxes over the side. So in NW Ohio, there is a dump that has a ton of this stuff buried in it. If we only knew.....

    To be real with you guys, these are not totally harmless. They do release beta particles but the amount is so minute, the chances of it causing damage to you is, for all intents and purposes, negligible- a little worse that walking out on a sunny day. The risk is there. Bonus fact, the metal and element Bismuth is radioactive, however, it is so astronomically small to be effected and harmed from it. It releases like 3-8 beta particles a day for ~100 grams worth and has a half life several times longer that the estimated life of the universe. For perspective, a single atom of uranium decays into lead by releasing 6 beta particles a second.

      Great information. Thanks for sharing!

    • @ManonVarendaz
      @ManonVarendaz ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Indeed they are not entirely safe. Since 99% of the natural Uranium is mostly U-238 (a lot less radioactive than U-235 and U-234) and the amount is even higher in depleted Uranium (which are both used for Uranium glas) they are primarily emitting Alpha radiation, which is especially dangerous when it gets into the body by eating or drinking off of the glas. The decay products however do emit beta radiation which is more difficult to protect yourself from. There is not a lot of Uranium in the glas so generally speaking it is harmless but I certainly would not consume anything off of it.

    Informative upload. Great refresher for learning about Uranium Glass.
    I recently acquired a UG ashtray, about 4.5 in diameter that fits nicely in the round, open base of a very old cast-iron desk lamp I repaired. Does anyone know a source for a general dating of the UG ashtray, or maybe the lamp? (Oddly, the lamp has no detectable manufacturer engravings or markings on it, but has been tentatively identified as being from the "Art Nouveau" period.)

    • @BackPorchAntiques
      @BackPorchAntiques  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That sounds very cool! Unfortunately, the only way to date the glass is either through a marking/label or stylistically. The same would be for the base. I think, by the way you described it, you're probably correct in your assumption.

    I got a frosted bar set uranium there are flowers I think on it. They are not all there and the ones that are there are partially gone. Can I remove them and do you know how? Is it best to leave as is? I don’t collect just loved this piece.

    • @BackPorchAntiques
      @BackPorchAntiques  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You could probably remove them with oven cleaner if you really want them gone. Be careful, though. Start with an inconspicuous, small spot to make sure it doesn't damage the glass somehow. Also, be careful as not to breathe the fumes or get the fluid on your hand. Apparently it's dangerous for your health.

    I’ve been hunting uranium glass for about 12 years. Found some great pieces and sold some I regret selling because I’ll probably never find them again regardless of the price. There were Vaseline glass pieces made that have uranium in them even in the late 1800s. Getting harder and harder to find the really old and rare pieces, seems like people who are buying them are keeping them nowadays and not selling them. I have over 100 uranium glass pieces currently and I’m no longer selling any of mine either. When I first started hunting it was so much cheaper and easier to find them then it is now. I believe I missed my era for buying nice pieces for much cheaper then they are now. I no longer buy common pieces though and only hard to find pieces.

    • @shuruff904

      It would be extremely rare for that to happen, as most of it has around the same amount of radioactivity as a glow in the dark watch dial (radium paint) from before the 70s. I've never heard of Geiger counters showing barely any radioactivity on uranium, depression or custard glass, but I suppose accidents could happen. Maybe if a piece was glowing on its own or blinds you under a blacklight, I'd be concerned, but if you've heard of a case where the glass caused harm, I'd love to hear more.

      It said uranium glass responds at 395 nm, but manganese glass not so much.
      At 365 mm, uranium and manganese glass glows. But lead, cadmium and selenium glass also glow at 365. Thread didn't mention what the other glasses did at 395.

    I've recently gotten into uranium glass, and have already acquired a few pieces. But my question is this . . . is it possible to fake uranium glass? Like, is there a way to make regular glass glow like the uranium glass, to try to trick someone into buying it? I have a couple different portable black/UV lights that I use to locate them, which "in the wild," (items randomly for sale, but not indicated as uranium) is super useful. But if someone listed an item as specifically being uranium glass, is there something they could do to regular glass to make it seem like uranium glass?

      There may be a paint that could be applied. I think like something you could find at Spencer’s in the mall back in the day! However, there is no way to actually fake the glass that I know of. It has to be included in the manufacturing process.

      Very cool! Early glass makers were often using glass with uranium qualities without intention, so almost any early glass company made pieces that glow. The glass doesn't glow. It's UV fluorescent. Just like a white cotton t-shirt will become a brighter violet under a black light but won't continue to"glow" once the ultraviolet light is removed. What you're saying is a misnomer. Seems like it's true, however it's not.

    • @karhukivi
      @karhukivi 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      "Glow" is not a technical word, the cotton fluoresces due to a chemical (optical white) applied in the washing powder, but it can be washed off. The uranium oxide has entered the silicate molecules in the glass so the glass itself is fluorescing. It "glows" while under UV, but the glow does not persist for more than some milliseconds, unlike some other fluorescent materials. The afterglow is called "phosphorescence", (but nothing to do with phosphorous).

    This whole "Uranium Glass" thing is crazy to me. My dad was an antique dealer all his life, I grew up working his place, doing auctions, going to estate sales, holding estate sales, you name it. Nobody EVER called this stuff "Uranium Glass" until about 20 years ago. It was always "Vaseline Glass" or simply "Green Depression" before that. The Uranium was added to virtually all green glassware for over a hundred years simply to make it green - didn't have anything to do with wanting to make it glow. People in the Victorian era or the Depression didn't have UV lights - they didn't know the stuff glowed, it was just green glass. Now, it's gitchy to call it something it was never called before (until about two decades back), and try to make it seem scarce - it's not. MOST pre-WWII green glassware, no matter who made it, will glow to varying degrees under a UV light. Yes, it's cool, but, I wish people would wake up and realize this stuff isn't rare or scarce.

    • @BackPorchAntiques
      @BackPorchAntiques  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're half right; maybe 25%. Not all depression era green, glows. About half of it does. Also, there are a lot of rare patterns and pieces; those are the expensive ones. However, you're correct in the understanding that 20 years ago it was rebranded. I'm ok with that for a couple of reasons... 1. It reintroduced a popularity to a dying collectible. 2. It brought young people into the hobby. 3. It made me money. 🤣. Thanks for commenting! !

    • @karhukivi
      @karhukivi 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      It is scarce, and that's why collectors want those pieces, like old stamps, coins, photos, books, cars and motorbikes.
      The uranium does fluoresce in daylight which contains UV (sun tan) and gives it silky appearance that was much sought-after by Victorians who paid more for it even 150 years ago. Uranium glass is the more technical name, but as vaseline was first manufactured in 1870, that name stuck.

  • @JeffBishop_KB3QMT
    @JeffBishop_KB3QMT 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    I've been collecting Vaseline glass for over 40 years now. I've never heard it referenced as "uranium glass" before. The two pieces of the yellow-green color, the button pitcher and orange juicer, is "Vaseline" glass. The rest of what you have in front of you is simply Depression Glass. Yes, the green color comes from uranium, but green depression glass is different from Vaseline glass. The value differently as well, green depression glass is of like value to any other depression glass. What collectors want is the Vaseline glass, as it's much more valuable.

    • @BackPorchAntiques
      @BackPorchAntiques  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I think I mentioned those name differences in my video. If not, it was a previous one. However, collectors of this glass today call it Uranium Glass, and they buy it as soon as I get it in the store. Also, this market has changed significantly in 6 months, so nothing is as it was 40 years ago to these new collectors. Yellow or green doesn't matter. It's all about how bright it glows and what shape it is.

    • @CalvinGentry-u9h
      @CalvinGentry-u9h 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Although its sometimes used interchangeably with uranium glass, but true Vaseline Glass refers to a specific yellow-green color. Custard Glass can be mistaken for uranium glass because some custard glass contains uranium. True custard glass is opaque and usually a pale yellow. Canary Glass is another term sometimes used for yellow uranium glass, which can cause confusion as well

    • @jerichomoses9790
      @jerichomoses9790 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I agree with @BackPorchAntiques. It’s not like it used to be. Most people now refer to any green glass that glows as uranium glass and the value over the last year or more has significantly increased. Also getting harder and harder to find better uranium glass pieces for any kind of reasonable price. But I’m basing prices off of what they once were, so to me they seem crazy expensive compared to what they were 10 years ago.
