      BTW squirrel cage fans would use less power and spin faster if your filter gets clogged. It will move less air but the fan moves faster with less power usage.

    When I was a young airmen on the aircraft carrier, I'd perform ventilation maintenance and our filters were stainless steel. You could easily see through the filters, they weren't anything special, but the vent shops would run the filters through a dishwasher, spray oil on them once they were dry and issue them back to us to install. This comment may not add any value to the content you've posted, but I thought others might find this interesting.

    I ditched my MERV 13 filters in my two split HC systems and I'm following your advice. My 9-year-old daughter seems to sneeze year-round in the house. Will try anything now to help and stop buying Claritin & Zyrtec meds. Living in the Miami-FLL area, I was initially concerned with layering two MERV 8 filters together because I didn't want to overwork my air handlers. But, I spoke to an HVAC tech who said it is better to have a thicker, two inch MERV 8 filter than a one-inch MERV 13 filter. Thank you @MrKnowitAllGuru

      Wrong, remember thicker means harder work on your hvac. Common sense. Hvac want you to replace your system years before necessary. They sell your old carried off systems as used. Dont fall into their trap. And do not use canola oil on those filters, it's a food. And it draws pests. Don't do it. Winex air purifiers are great, I have two myself, that's whst he has up there on that table. You don't need a filter on top of your stainless steel reusable filter. Most your dust comes from your attic, between tbe open walls in your attic. Clean your attic, get between tbe open walls with a long vacuum hose, thrn seal up the openings but make tbe seal removable for future access. Seal up around your saufat in your attic too, any cracks and day light seen, and install a electrical outlet up in your attic and put a couple 1500 to 2000 square feet coverage air purifiers up in your attic, add a shut off switch on main level to easy shut off as needed. Next, spray a all natural chemical free dust mite killer in your attic including between the walls and around tbe saufat - if possible- to kill off any existing dust mites. And make sure your attic access hatch/door has a good seal gasket around the access opening to keep out any contributing dust, dirt, pests, dampness and pollen. The attic is where 98 percent of your dust and allergens are coming from when tbe hvac runs it creates a vacuum that pulls the dust into your home. If your attic is vented, add vent fans to pull out the dust and excess heat in summer months and cold air in tve winter months too, along with a outlet and another separate on/off switch on main level fir the attic vent fans. Lastly, make sure your plumbing vents and flu on your roof are in good shape and are properly sealed at the abutment of the vent and where the roof shingles or metal roof abut and connect, seal with waterproof sealant for roof. One final measure, is to hire a hvac duct cleaning company to vacuum out your hvac system and duct work, air return vent and to seal any gaps in your hvac, ductwork, blower, coils, and such. Many times there are visible gaps. These measures are important. Carpet and carpet padding is notorious for high level of dangerous chemicals in them so if your family has allergies, and are dust matts - get rid of your carpets and padding if snd when possible and settle for large area rugs over wood or tile floors if you like carpet. Best wishes.

      My only "but" is with your first statement. Thickness is different from density. A thin dense filter would stress your HVAC before a thick loose filter would. Think of a forest verses a fence. I could easily walk through a forest miles thick, but not through a plank fence less than an inch thick. ❤

    Great content! I've been in the HVACR industry going on 6yrs now. With most of my customer base being commercial hotel high rises, restaurants & storage facilities I've been using the blue filter media the last 4yrs. In the kitchens of restaurants, I find extreme conditions with additional grease and flower causing expensive repairs to the refrigeration equipment that are in close proximity to fryers and breading stations. I use the blue media as a disposable to protect the condenser coils and it most certainly helps when doing scheduled preventive maintenance, On the residential side whenever I install a new unit or have scheduled p.m. I use the cheapest fiberglass filters with a Merv rating below 4 and recommend customers change them whenever they pay the electric bill every month. I like the idea of implementing the orange media and the canola oil is a great idea when reusing. Should make the cleaning process easier. However, the commercial kitchens are so bad that I have no choice but to throw them away and replace them with new.

      Dusty house no matter what filter your using,check the compartment or return air to system and make sure it’s not pulling unfiltered air into system. From the attic is one of the major offenders and under the walls of the return air compartment. A high MERV filter will cause a system to pull air from any source other than the filter,path of least resistance.

      getting too high of a merv is gonna reduce airflow (maybe change head pressure if too much).
      Finding a 4 merv is getting impossible locally. Getting 7's is tough to even order.
      In the harsh conditions you had in kitchens? You saved their butts for sure. Average homeowner? I don't think i'd do this in an older home and not with animals for sure.
      Folks will forget and pressures are gonna go stupid.

    I have been investigating my dust problem for a while now and what I discovered is that a large percent of dust does not come from the HVAC intake. It comes from the Human body as well as fibers from things like our clothing and blankets and stuff. But I was surprised to discover how much dust is really skin cells and dandruff. And it really only came to light when I bought a mesh fabric office chair. I noticed that the mesh was allowing all the stuff flaking off my body to accumulate on the underside and backside of the chair. A thick coating of dust. I realized it was not from the air but my body.

    Great videos, thank you so much for all your knowledge and sharing.
    I spray a paper framed air filter with diluted Dawn (that I actually use when cleaning dishes which I have in a good quaiity Zep spray bottle from Lowes or Walmart). After allowing the water to dry, it leaves a thin tacky coating that will make the dust stick to it but still allow air to pass through. When the the filters get dirty, simply take them outside or your shower and after spraying it for 10-15 seconds, they are clean as good as new because of the Dawn coating you applied doesn't allow the dust to stick. In the shower, you can clearly see how much dirt had collected in it. Hang to dry on clothesline or hanger with binder ciips (in the shower overnight) and respray with diluted Dawn when ready. Allow water to completely evaporate before using.
    But, before using it, I treat the paper frame with a diluted waterproof wood glue with a cheap dollar store paint brush. I apply 2-3 coats (allowing each coat to dry in between). After completely dry, then I spray the filter pleats with diluted dawn solution to make it tacky for dust to stick when in use.
    Tip: Diluted Dawn also works great to flies and other bugs outdoors. Any bug with an exoskeleton diluted Dawn will kill it. Don't use it indoors as it can make floors slippery. This spray also works great when you have small areas of standing water to kill mosquito larvae as it disrupts surface tension which will drown them.

A vet once told me to make a soap ring around the dog's neck first because fleas will try to escape to a dryer part of the dog. Usually the dog's body is wet down first.
      Dawn also makes a good homemade non-scratching tub/shower cleaner when mixed with vinegar (1 part Dawn to 3 parts vinegar). Just have to rinse very well (after light scrubbing) or it will be slippery and dangerous.

    Good video for those that will do this and probably the best use of canola oil.
    When I did construction defect litigation, I often represented the HVAC contractor named in the suit. Homeowners would state low register airflow when HVAC was in operation. I'd go over to the return air for a look and observe the air filter almost black and being sucked into the duct. I'd ask the homeowner when they last changed the filter, and some didn't have a clue what I was talking about. I told them at this point they should have the system cleaned by a pro. What falls into the floor registers gets blown back out. There is filter material available for the registers.

    I layer mine with the lower merv on the outside to catch the bigger particles and the higher merv filters behind it to filter the smaller particles. I clean the outer lower merv filter more often because it tends to get dirtier faster where I live. Hope that makes sense. This keeps the higher merv filter last a bit longer.

      Filters on the ceiling don't get near as dirty as filters at floor level, and if you have a filter near a exterior door that is used frequently it will really draw in dust. I was a custom home builder and I would put a return air with a filter in it in each bedroom and on the ceilings where needed in the rest of the house. It might have 6 to 9 filters but because they were on the ceiling you would only have to change them once a year. And if you keep your bedroom doors shut it was easy to maintain good air return to the main unit.

    I enjoyed your video on how to improve air economically. My biggest concern is that a person may forget to change their tactified filter which would cause the furnace to cycle on auto reset main high limit. This would greatly shorten the heat exchanger life span. I've been using the 4.5 " deep by 20 by 16 MERV 8 filters. My returns are on the high sidewall I replace my filter every 12 to 18 months. I would recommend REME LED duct light which produces aerosol peroxide which have past lab tests to kill 99% of airborne viruses. Best Regards

      First off, your statement of a person forgetting to change their tactified filter... if they forget to do something that is this important they deserve all of the issues and ramifications that come from their lack of caring. I'm not trying to sound mean here, but my dad always taught me "I forgot" is the worst excuse a person can have. That is like telling the police officer when you get pulled over for going 90mph, that "I forgot" that the speed limit was 55mph. Thanks for watching John, have a great day. Guru Mike

    Very interesting video. The Winix 5500 is a decent air purifier for the price but it is definitely NOT the best air purifier on the market by a long shot. There are many other solutions on the market that perform better than the Winix 5500 for particle filtration and odors/VOCs. Plus, it only accommodates smaller-sized rooms. I think the alternative HVAC filtration ideas with the sprays is interesting - and I would be very interested to see a 3rd party lab do a test on it and its performance vs. other MERV-rated filters. I have found that electrostatic solutions in general, are not too great for filtering particles, but, I'm open-minded and perhaps with the addition of the media and spray - they work much better. Thanks for "thinking outside the box".👍

    Ya, so I've been using Filtrete filters for years now, merv 11, I believe.
    I went down to the basement days ago to replace the filter. While going through the stacks of spares, I pull out the AAP electrostatic filter I bought years ago. What if, I cut open one of the lower merv filter paper frames, then flatten out the accordion fabric and lay it across the metal frame of the first filter?....I says.
    Guess that's my next scheme. Find an appropriately rated filter to use with my electrostatic washable one. My thinking is something close to a merv 6 or 8. If in fact, the material is made of synthetic fibers, nothing stops me from washing that too.
    Any supplemental filtration will come from my Hepa air purifiers, anyways.

    My air handler in Florida is in a closet with the filter in the door. it has a frame where the disposable air filter goes. How do I add an additional inch of blue filter or the tack pink material on top of the regular disposable filter? The frame looks like it can only hold the 1 inch filter.

    Been using stainless a long time,clean monthly,never used the oil or mist,just wash,dry,febreeze,reinstall. I also run unit without filter and spray lysol every six months in returns to stop mold from ever growing in vent work. JM2C Im amazed at how many people never change a filter, or the ones that use high merv filters, the air restriction will make your air handler work much harder, and many times cause the coils to freeze up. You cant fix stupid but you can charge a lot of money for it

    Hi. Thanks for making this. I’m about to make this change in my HVAC but just a suggestion, with many people asking in the comments on how to do it in their HVAC (what frame, how to mount, what direction the material, etc) maybe it would be great to see it implemented on an HVAC so people can get ideas on the frame and how to actually fit it in. I bought the reusable filters from Home Depot and the orange media from Amazon. I have a 4” and a 1” spot on my hvac and thinking the 4” spot might work but not sure how to mount the media to the filter so it stays. Clips? Anything better?

    If I buy the reusable metal filter, I don’t think it will fit in the filter slot. The disposable filters seem to take up almost the entire slot . How do you get around the size issue of the permanent filter plus the home made added width?
    Regarding the comments about restricting air flow using this method, you explained it very clearly. Home made or store bought, dirty filters restrict flow, not how they are made, unless you use the wrong MERV rating.

    • @ChristopherSmith-ek1wr
      @ChristopherSmith-ek1wr ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @MrKnowItAllGuru
      @MrKnowItAllGuru  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Remember my friend, believe it or not, those filters are like a pool filter, the dirtier they are, the better the filtration you get. Now with that being said, most filters that you put in your furnace have to be replaced every 30 days, you can easily go 45 to 60 days before pulling these out and cleaning them saving you time and money. Now if you have a lot of dust and pet hair etc you may choose to clean them sooner than that. The aluminum filter goes in first followed by this material amzn.to/3Ff9XnO Thank you for watching, have a great day my friend. Guru Mike
