    For anyone wondering, the zeebo is a brazilian indie console with a tiny library, with Resident Evil 4 as it's one big game.

    Man, I miss Viewtiful Joe. It's a shame Capcom shut down Clover Studios, thus relegating Joe to a roster slot in whichever Capcom crossover fighting game they roll out.
    Clover Studios was, of course, reborn as Platinum Games. But Platinum is wary about working with Capcom again, so Viewtiful Joe feels more like the child of a divorced couple and Capcom is the lousier parent to get full custody.

    The Gamecube had a fantastic game library on the whole... and honestly if any 2-3 decent exclusives would have stayed that way it'd probably have a really solid reputation. But eventually you lose your exclusive Tales of Symphonia and your Capcom games, nobody pays attention to Custom Robo for some reason, and you end up the 'ehhhh' of Nintendo to a lot of folks.

      Sure there were some advantages, but the way the industry was moving towards the cinematic made optical the natural choice. Nintendo sticking to cartridges is what lead to Final Fantasy 7 and Metal Gear Solid moving to Sony, which became the Playstation's biggest games. There were quite a few reasons the Gamecube failed commercially the biggest one being the atrocious manner in which it was released to Europe which to this day is Sony's biggest market demographic. The Gamecube came out 2 years after the PS2 in it's most dominant region with no backwards compatibility, an exclusive approach to 3rd party developers unlike the PS2's open approach and just a general lack of effort in all regions outside of America.
      That loss taught Nintendo a harsh lesson one that was learnt by the DS and Wii which remain Nintendo's best selling consoles of all time thanks to a HUGE array of developer support and fair cost for buyers.

      Joel Schembri If you play some of the Nintendo Eshop games, like Xeodrifter, Mutant Mudds, Witch and Hero, Bit Boy! Arcade, Cubit the Hardcore Platformer Robot, Box Boy, Pullblocks, and The Denpa Men, you'll find some real gems at the same price as steam games. They also have some really good ports like Cave Story, Binding of Isaac Rebirth, VVVVVV, Shovel Knight, and a port of most classic games from the NES and SNES.

  • @MrOmegatronic

    Fun fact, N64 cartridges actually _were_ a significantly better media than CD-ROMs. It's just that they were also a significantly more expensive, and significantly smaller, medium. And this was around the time where game devs were reveling in their newfound ability to make "big" games that could use a (then) ton of storage space to provide significantly better experiences, and there was a medium that provided exactly that at the cost of actually having load times (and basically no other cost, with how relatively-cheap CDs were). N64 games had practically no load time due to essentially being another memory bank, and could support better save systems than CD-ROMs (such as, y'know, _on-medium saves_ ), but just plain didn't have the storage capacity to capitalise on it anymore (and realistically, a lot of games had issues that introduced load times anyways, albeit still usually shorter than PC or PS1 games). At a time when storage capacity was the single most important factor for developers (with many of the advantages CDs brought just being different applications of the extra space), and unit cost was the single most important factor for their bosses. And even if they had the capacity, they were (again) too expensive to make for it to be worth their while, especially for new or troubled companies that couldn't afford a full cartridge production run.
    If the console had been released a few years later, this wouldn't have been (as much of) an issue; while the shell would still be relatively expensive, potential storage capacity would go up around the time SD cards started to catch on, which would've been the ideal medium by allowing for something close to (but still somewhat behind, IIRC) CD-ROM-level content with cartridge speed. But alas, the N64 came out in the awkward period when cartridges were losing viability to CD-ROMs, and couldn't be made small enough to offset production costs without sacrificing most of their capacity.
    At least, I remember this being the case; I may be a bit off about when Flash would be viable enough to have started fixing N64 cart issues.
    -I do distinctly remember GC discs being so small specifically as a heavy-handed anti-piracy measure, though, to make sure you couldn't just copy a game to CD-ROM and load it into the console, and to make it that much harder for companies to release unlicensed games. Nothing new there, really, just Nintendo being Nintendo. xD-

      I remember the ad campaign for FF7. The headline was: "Someone get the people who make cartridge games a cigarette and a blindfold." Bang! First shot fired at Nintendo by Square. Then they ended the ad saying, " If it were available on cartridge, it'd retail for around $1200." Boom! Second shot fired!

      @jwil4286 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrOmegatronic true, but my point was that the Game Gear and Nomad were basically portable versions of their home consoles (ie, they were too powerful for their own good). Sony then made the PS Vita, which was on par with the PS3, but development for those systems are too expensive.

I would love to see how Viewtiful Joe would respond to Master Hand and Crazy Hand.

    The N64 stuck with cartridges because they are solid-state media. It meant zero loading times (the biggest drawback of disks) and save data could be stored in the cartridge without proprietary save-cards up until the later end of the N64's life when it had to be given up for some games in order to meet the capacity quota. Cartridges were also much more robust. The downside was that manufacturing cartridges with the same storage capacity as disks was ludicrously expensive at the time, so the N64's cartridges were more limiting on how much game data they could contain and when games started getting more advanced, it strained the crap out of dev teams to fit more and more complex games. The game producer could spec cartridges with greater capacity, but it meant charging more for price of the game. After the GameCube, the argument for cartridges returned with the first DS.

    • @RoboBoddicker
      @RoboBoddicker 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hell yes. At least the Wii had the good sense to make most of its games compatible with the GC controller.

    • @MrOmegatronic
      @MrOmegatronic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm... yeah, that sounds about right.
      • Making the main button the largest face button on the controller instantly solves the biggest issue with controller schemes, by making it perfectly clear which button is meant to do what (and, with any reasonable dev, what button _will_ do what in the default control scheme): The big A button handles the most important game function(s) and menu accept, the secondary B button handles menu cancel and the second-most important game function(s), and other buttons are flexible secondary features.
      • Triggers are pressure-sensitive with palpable feedback, allowing them to provide more functionality than purely digital triggers.
      • The C stick handles camera controls much more smoothly than the N64's C buttons, and is responsive enough (and just as importantly, remappable enough) to handle whatever other task if camera control isn't important.
      • The overall button layout makes everything easy to access, and will be trivially memorised in an hour or two tops.
      Only real issues are that it didn't have stick buttons since they hadn't caught on yet, and that it kept the N64's knee Z instead of going with dual shoulder triggers.

      The GameCube controller was fantastic, but I honestly think the Wii Remote is underrated; it was certainly flawed (no second stick for camera controls), but IR-pointer aiming was fantastic. I loved using the bow in the Wii version of Twilight Princess because aiming was a breeze. I honestly kind-of miss it (though gyro aim on the Wii U and Switch is still good).

  • @BainesMkII

    Viewtiful Joe 1 sold so well in Japan that people were immediately requesting a reprint, as the game was selling out due to Capcom of Japan giving the title a low print run. Capcom of Japan had spent that weekend announcing that the game's sales were disappointing, and went on to say that they wouldn't reprint the GC version until they'd ported the game to the PS2.
    The Gamecube release of Killer 7 was delayed at least a year just so that Capcom could make a PS2 port of that game and release them together.
    The story at the time behind the whole Capcom/Nintendo partnership was that Capcom management didn't want an exclusives deal, but were forced into it by Shinji Mikami. Mikami at the time was upset with Sony, and had allegedly went off on the company in an interview, complaining that they intentionally designed their various hardware to fail. Capcom bristled at the deal. Capcom repeatedly knocked and undermined their Gamecube game sales, and actively supported PS2 ports to the detriment of Gamecube sales. There were a handful of claims that some at Capcom were actively out to sabotage Gamecube game sales. Heck, this is the periods where when Capcom realized that it was badly overestimating sales figures for Sony and Microsoft's system, but were meeting their sales figures for Nintendo systems, Capcom's response was to cut future support for Nintendo systems in half. As for Capcom announcing the PS2 port of RE4 a *year* in advance, they were only waiting for Mikami to finish RE4 first. Capcom went on to shut down Production Studio 5 and to allegedly move Mikami to a "we aren't going to officially fire you, but we really want you to quit" position. (Mikami would later quit.)

    Exclusive games may seem like a bad concept on paper, because questions like "why would you ever make your game exclusively for one console(unless it's a first party dev)? It's just limiting the people who can buy it" pop up. But in practice, they work really well. The developers only have to focus on making the game work on one version, so that would either A. give them more time to focus on making the game run as smooth as possible or B. Give them more time to work on the other stuff in the game.
    This is evidenced by the fact that quite a lot of really good games throughout the years has been exclusives. Mario, Pokemon, Sonic the Hedgehog (1-3, at least), Zelda, Crash Bandicoot, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, the list goes on and on.
