BWCA Backpacking...Old Pines & Kekekabic Trails

Couple of nights out up into the recently re-opened Boundary Waters Canoe Area out of Ely, Minnesota. Took the Snowbank Trail to Kekekabic Trail to Moiyaka Lake. Camped the night. Then did the Old Pines Trail back to Disappointment Trail. Camped. Then hiked out. Good couple of nights slumber in the SuperiorGear Starlite hammock. The ULA OHM toted my load wonderfully.

I’ve been watching for years. Learned about hammocks from you. A few years later, I was on a camping trip and met a woman struggling with her hammock. I taught her what I knew. Now, we’re married. Don’t think we’d have chatted had I not watched your channel!

I hear you! I have had a low-level bit of anger and anxiety due to the state of affairs of the planet. Taking this trip released some of those feelings.
Watching you "enjoy" the healthy pop-tart was very enjoyable to watch for me.

Thanks Shug. September is my favorite month for the bwca. The evening serenity of the lake that first night looked magical. Always sad to see an old majestic pine go down. What tales that stoic sentinal could tell. Glad that the fires have allowed the reopening. After hearing about the fires an old friend commented, " it's like an old friend is in trouble and needs help."

It was peaceful. Always forget how rocky that trail is. Not a lot of smooth walking. Volley ball size slippery rocks everywhere so it takes some focus.
The pop tart company needs to bring back the peanut butter pop tarts. I also use them for backpacking with my son's boy scout troop. Love the video Shug. Whoo hoo buddy.

You are spot on about the disappointment mountain comment, Shug. It certainly is no disappointment to us here in MN. Makes me think of when my grandpa use to visit from Washington state though. He’d always tease me if I mentioned some place like eagle mountain, mount Josephine, Carlton peak etc. Gramps would always say “so that’s way they named this place “Minny” Sota😂
Minnesota has a special beauty up there.

Nature is tough to predict. Looked good to me up there.
Good to see you out on the trail. Mosquitoes weren't really a problem all summer long -- including my Boundary Waters canoe trip which was cut short partly due to the closure. No skeets, one of the few benefits of a drought. Maybe the only benefit?
I do think so.....
We could smell wisps of the wildfires from Minnesota in the U.P. a month ago when the wind shifted from the NW. I saw on my weather app a new wildfire 17 miles north of my cabin so I hopped on my motorcycle to scope it out. I was happy to discover there was no trace of a wildfire that I could find. What beautiful weather and the trees are turning early (early!) here also.
I smelled no fires and the maples were so nice and red.

My sons and I were in the boundary waters and July, right before they closed and the colors were nowhere near as impressive as what you're seeing now. That being said, it was one of the best trips we've ever taken even if Kek, with high winds and waves, kicked our butts. I didn't bring my hammock and instantly regretted it the first night... Next time it goes with me. We paddled 56 miles and I was looking at the trails that paralleled our path. They're on bucket list now. I was watching one of your DutchWare reivews and saw this one. Thanks for sharing your adventure.

We had some nice rain here in SC recently. I commented to my wife how beautiful it was and how a good a hike in it would be. She dared me to go, I was out of the house in 5 minutes and hit Paris Mountain.

Shug we are the same age and have very similar interests and similar humor. Although I have talked of getting a Jeep I have not gotten one yet. I am glad you finally came over to the canoe side of the wilderness experience. I mostly do canoe camping on sandbars in Texas and love my hammock. All my kids are hammock campers as well. I really enjoy watching your videos and I get/understand your humor (early, breaking wind, etc) much to the amusement of my kids and wife that just don't seem to get it. They always ask what is so funny about his humor or that's strange and I just shrug my shoulders and say I cant explain it. Wishing you well, and many long and healthy years.

.thank you so much for the nice video. I have not walked those trails. I ave been on Snowbank, Parent, Disappointment, Kek, Spoon, Knife,Vera, Ensign and several other little one up that way about three times or so. I tend to drift over to the western area of the BWCA more these days.
Just got home from a week on the Moose River up to Lac La Croix and back. Good times, two Bears and good country.

Thanks for another great video, Shug. I really needed this one! I've been stuck doing minimal stuff the last month. Blood pressure got completely out of control, now on the second medication and finally starting to get some results.
Hoping to head up and do some of the ice age trail next month. Had to put bwca hiking off until next year.

Sympathizing. The fires here in California in the last few years have made the end of summer/early (EARLY!) fall a no go for outdoor pursuits. Only one hammock camping trip this summer for me. Hoping to get in some camping before snows-if it does snow. Love that you take us along!

I used to think you were crazy being a displaced Southerner and somehow loving backpacking in MN of all places until my Scout troop went to NT and did 6 days around Ely canoing. Now, I understand why you love it there. It's something that you can't really capture in video. But I still think you're crazy.
