Shug, i've gotta tell ya...I’ve been watching your channel for about 12 years now and I never miss one of your backpacking videos. I love them. But this series of videos brought me a whole new level of enjoyment to your videos. What a fun change of pace to see you kind of try something new (Canoeing the BWCA alone). I enjoyed every second of it!
I’ve got to admit, I was really hoping we got to see you catch a Northern or a Bass on that little rod. Oh how fun that would have been! And I also kept waiting for you to see a moose grazing in the rice, but thats the beauty of it, all of those things get to be saved for the next time!! Woooo buddy!! I do hope you continue canoeing the BWCA, Shug, this was fun and I could tell you enjoyed it too!! -Gavin

Thank you, Shug, for all your hard work in filming-carrying and putting down your load to change different camera angles, rowing away and coming back to pick up your camera, etc. Made your video more cinematic.😁

Your adventures are so enjoyable. From the subtle cultural references of Hogan’s Heroes (I know nothing) to Greek mythology (siren’s song) to the Shugery hijinks and spontaneous songs, nothing compares to the Great Shug. Awesome trip. I’m looking forward to the 10-day version. By the way, catching a video of lake turtles making a nest and laying eggs was epic. Great timing. See you next time. Ciao.

I’ve been watching your channel for years and I’ve always enjoyed your content. Your energy was always up, you were funny and shared your considerable talents with us. But these last two videos have struck me as different, and in a way that I’ve enjoyed to the max. Still funny, great content and information but the slow pace and contemplative nature of these last two videos has me all choked up. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Shug, turtle speak is very, very soft, and one must listen very carefully. They came out to thank you for caring so much about their beautiful home and to wish you farewell. They want you to come back soon to stay a little longer. Those gals knew they were safe and could leave their eggs at your camp. How precious was that moment! God bless and keep you, friend.

Hey Shug eating on a canoe trip is different for everyone - our favourite is planning a leisurely , late breakfast, and early dinner with snacks whenever you feel like throughout the day or around the fire. Group trip dynamics are different of course or if you are trying to go for miles, which I (we) rarely do. Lots of folks do their own dehydrating, some stick with freeze dried , oh man I'm enjoying and hope to continue enjoy watching you discover all the canoe-y goodness...!!!

Very impressive maiden voyage Shug! You’re prep time showed and sooo agree with your shout out to Bill Mason. He loved the woods, water and figured out what the Aboriginals did years ago that the canoe was the best option for woods travel in North America! Here’s to you staying fit and healthy for many more years of hiking and/or canoe tripping! Oh, and double carrying is more time consuming but so much safer and gives you time to stretch and enjoy the hike vs straining under a heavy load…

I used to do a lot of canoe camping and man oh man loved seeing someone else out there loving it just as much as I did/do. If you are looking for your next canoe camping trip you should check out platform camping out of NC. The Roanoke River Partners have a great platform system. Nothing like paddling to your platform that you can only get to with a small boat, surrounded by water, owls hooting all night long. Happy trails to ya and many great paddles in the future as well.

I’m so happy for you Shug. You got a good taste of the boundary waters on this trip. And turtles! How cool is that?! Now, as for the paddle. I used a bending branches expedition model for years. Then, my canoe buddies let me check out their Zaveral “Rec” paddle. It’s a bent shaft carbon fiber 12 oz. beauty. You can use your war club for your spare. The difference with strokes compounded during the day will let you paddle longer without fatigue. Making the paddle upgrade was my most impactful purchase and I’m a couple years younger than you. But then I bought my 32 lb. solo canoe.... Enjoy your journey. Love the report!

You sir are an entertainer and it shows. I think I said it once but I am shocked that you only have 100k subs. I am going to post on all your vids in a bid to assist the algorithm that might get you up there with the rest of the informative hiking, backpacking and canoeing folk.

Awesome, thanks Shug! I’m a hiker too (thru hiked the SHT), hiked parts of the Pow Wow a few times, but haven’t been canoeing the BWCA for decades. I do have a solo canoe that wants to go, so thanks for the inspiration. 🙂

@@shugemery It came back thiiicck with Jackpine everywhere. Folks did a good job of clearing this year, south side trail is now passable. Still looks kinda like a moonscape and Trail is dry.

Canoe is a great way to travel. You can really appreciate the design of the craft.
If you can find it I’d recommend reading “Canoeing with the Cree” by Eric Sevareid (the TV reporter). After high school in the thirties he and a buddy canoed from Minneapolis up the Mississippi to the Red River of the north and on to Hudson Bay. In Canada the canoe was still used by the natives. A great story,

Thoroughly enjoyed watching your trip. Looks like an amazing place to paddle, camp, fish & lolligag. I've been doing ++backpacking but this video makes me think about trying canoe tripping. I used to canoe all the time having grown up on a river...time to check out kijiji for a used canoe ;) Whooa buddy!
