    It’s a damn shame that there aren’t more TH-camrs (or just creators in general) who speak Chinese and English fluently and can share Chinese culture with the world. Instead all we see on socials is rampant misinformation and unbridled racism. Keep doing what you’re doing because it’s an invaluable service!

      @@xmeng137the govt needs to realize that whatever control they’re giving up by getting rid of the wall, they’re gaining back 100 fold in soft power and influence. Every time some random Chinese meme finds its way over to the English speaking world it’s always a massive hit. It’s like what happened to JP vs KR entertainment in the 2010s: one more advanced but highly insular, the other laser focused on international expansion. We see the results today. If you flood the market with cultural content, people will come.

      I play on PS5 for both games and Ghost of Tsushima has BY FAR greater graphics/textures/framerate, but that should be expected for a AAA PlayStation exclusive game made by one of the most accomplished video game developers and has been out for a while. For me when I play BMW the framerate lags or drops occasionally even in performance mode and the textures come in like a second late during cutscenes especially when the camera is focused on something or zooming in. That being said both games are just phenomenal and as someone of Korean descent I am jealous of the Chinese and Japanese haha.

      He built up a fake Leiyin temple and impersonated the Buddha to fool the OG gang and captured them. If there are any players who haven't been exposed to *Journey to the West* and are starting to play *Black Myth: Wukong*, I'd like to offer you some insights.
    *Journey to the West* wasn't just written suddenly; it’s a story that has evolved over hundreds, even thousands of years, blending real historical events, folklore, and religious elements from China. Throughout its long history, the story and its characters have taken on many forms (for instance, the earliest versions of the Great Sage the Equal of Heaven and Sun Wukong were not the same character, and the Yuan Dynasty's version of the story included a lot of NSFW contents). Even after the most famous novel version, *Journey to the West*, was written, people continued to reinterpret, rewrite, and draw inspiration from it.
    The story in *Black Myth: Wukong* is yet another reinterpretation, with a distinct personal style. Some elements may not align with the original spirit of *Journey to the West*. While I don’t oppose such adaptations and creations, it’s important to understand the differences between each work.
    I hope more people come to love *Black Myth: Wukong*, and I also hope that some will take this opportunity to appreciate the charm of the original *Journey to the West*. In the foreseeable future, this story is sure to continue inspiring more great works.

    Thank you for the video, great to finally see a Chinese person explain the story with Chinese context. Just a few things to add, as a fellow Chinese person who wants to show love to the other characters who got less attention:
    1) Sha Seng (Sandy) was not just a labourer, although that was his role most of the time. He does participate in some fights. When the party came across huge armies, Sandy would help fight off the demon minions. Because Sun Wukong was bad at fighting underwater, Sandy and Pigsy were in charge of the aquatic battles, although their role was usually the lure the demon above ground where Wukong would finish off the demon.
    2) Bai Long Ma whilst remaining a steed for the most part, actually does fight in 1 occasion when Tang Seng banished Wukong from the party. He was also the one who had the foresight to tell Pigsy to go to Huaguo Mountain to fetch Wukong back to rescue their master (so he actually does speak).

    the horse is the saddest character, the entire time, he was ridden by the monk and eat grass lol. He did occasionally help them out when they are trouble. But those are very rare events. He is a dragon prince that did his horse business very very well.

    In chapter 3 in the game, you would encounter 4 yaoguai chiefs named Non-Void, Non-Able, Non-Pure, and Non-White. They are disciples of Yellowbrow's and their names were given by Yellowbrow because he was trying to create a scripture-fetching team of his own. What's interesting is their names are basically like the counter version of the original's.
    悟空Wukong --> 不空Bukong (Non-Void)
    悟能Wuneng --> 不能Buneng (Non-Able)
    悟净Wujing --> 不净Bujing (Non-Pure)
    白龙马White Dragon Horse --> 不白Bubai (Non-White)

    Fantastic video. Thank you so, SO much for this.
    I've been a lifelong Dragon Ball fan so naturally I'd also done some surface level research into Sun Wukong. So I wasn't completely blank when Black Myth was announced and now released: I knew who Wukong is and what he's capable of.
    But as much as I wanted to read the actual novel to get the whole story, I never got round to it. Finally ordered a copy of Anthony Yu's volumes a few days ago, and now to find THIS video...perfect timing.🗿

    Great translation! I love it! When the master was choosing his name, he removed the "animal" side of the character according to the 1592 edition, that symbiotically means what he want to teach him is to be human. As for the two characters, why Sun was chosen was well explained. Thank you for making this video.

    I think the best word to translate the “Wu” (悟) is Epiphany. At least that’s the first word that sprung into my mind.

    • @enightc

    For those who don’t feel like reading the novel due to how insanely long it is, you can also watch 2 popular adaptations on YT: 1986 version of JTTW (there’s also a side sequel of the same cast in 2000 which is also pretty good in filling in holes for other trials Wukong faced) and the 1996 JTTW! I’d say 1996 definitely had better budget but imo the classic will always be 1986 since it’s also the most novel accurate version. Both are INSANELY popular in China so I highly recommend

    • @musical.unicorn
      @musical.unicorn 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      But the novel is great if you can understand the poetic intricacies in Chinese, though I’d say that English translations do leave some of it out which makes it harder to understand why this book is one of the 4 great classical novels of China

    Personally, I think the protagonist of JttW is Tang Sheng while the monkey, pig, horse (dragon) and the water demon are his characteristics in physical forms.
    All the demons and bad characters during the journey are the obstacles/troubles that Tang Sheng faced during the actual journey. Trouble with celestial beings can be inferred to trouble with Government officials, while trouble with Demons can be inferred to trouble with criminals.
