Not the least bit surprised by Amy's Vo2Max.. She just hopped on a bike a couple years ago and is effortlessly putting in absurd miles regularly. You just knew she had some crazy efficient engine in there. Some people just have that genetics (Evelyn Stevens, Emma Pooley). Wish I was that lucky.

@@bobbrian6526 Highest seems to be 76 but I think small differences are significant and when you get to the point Amy is at improving from 70.3 to 73 is extraordinarily difficult. It’s down played a bit here but a lot of it is genetic, Amy was born with a gift. You can train to improve but you can’t train to go from 60 to 70 if genetics limits you. Marginal gains can be made but a Great Leap Forward can’t.
Not that either of these super humans needs a great leap, they are fine where they are.

@@John64125 the more talented among us can improve VO2 max by about 10-20%, but obviously she is quite fit already, although seemingly not doing any structured interval training. Her lactate threshold is too low to compete at elite level, but that is much more trainable than VO2 max. and is also a better predictor of performance. If she trained properly and if her VO2 is 70 then she could compete with the best of the best. However, looking at Kyle and his numbers, it jus doesnt add up - you cant have a VO2 max of 70 but max out at 350 watts in a ramp test, that is more like 50 or 60 depending on his bodyweight. So it looks like the numbers are just a bit wrong

Unfortunately that piece of kit, calibrated or not, has a large degree of measurement error from the literature I have found on it.
I am familiar with most portable devices and use them in my on the road testing, the caution I always use with clients is that these things can and do have an amount of error factored in, and without trying to sound harsh, I have tested many well trained and genetically gifted elite athletes across a range of sports. Those with a VO2 over 70 are incredibly rare, and I have never personally tested above 65 with a woman.
So if you are interested in the exact number I would book a test at a university sports science lab using much, much more accurate kt.

As someone with a PhD in Exercise Science and has managed a commercial sport science facility at a UK University, I'm sorry to say that these results do not add up. When cycling we expect to see a relationship of 9.1-10.0 ml/kg/W. Therefore, although the VO2MAX is specifically measuring oxygen uptake, we know the bounds of agreement based on wattage. This is reduced in individuals who are heart failure patients, but shouldn't be greater than 9-10 ml/kg/W. If this was the case, it would mean that your efficiency was terrible, kind of like running with improper technique on a treadmill VO2MAX test (in this case speed would be less of a predictor of VO2MAX). In cycling however, the differences in efficiency between individuals is much lower. The VO2 Master is useful under certain circumstances, but this is not research grade equipment and the lab here should not be selling you this data as reliable. At University facilities we use research-grade breath by breath gas analysers that cost close to £100k to purchase and maintenance is carried out by trained staff.

great video and great job guys
however with results within 0.1 mL/kg/min of each other for two very different people which spat out elite level results.... might be an issue with equipment. that device is a vo2 master, pretty new tech with a lot of marketing buzz around it, but may not be accurate. the reason vo2 measuring devices use an exhaust tube (although annoying for the rider and upkeep) is to ensure the gas collected is 100% rider output. it also aids in calibration and standardization for accurate results. frankly speaking, not sure this device is providing you with accurate results

seems a bit unlikely. For female 70 is not just elite it is the top of the elite, Paula Radcliffe's VO2 max was 70 when she broke the world record for the marathon. For a male 70 is very high, many pro riders or Olympic level runners would be at this level. The very top of the elite men are around 80+. Given that Kyle looks like he could lose 10kg to be as lean as Chris Froome, that means he would be in the super elite but with relatively little training. From the glimpse of the power numbers we saw it doesnt seem likely he is in this group.

Have not done the test myself, but could surely keep those watts, and garmin estimates me at around 50 vo2max. It is weight dependable though isnt it ? So heavier riders will automatically get lower numbers.

The machine is measuring oxygen consumption, power is just there as a stress load. With a high VO2 and a lower power it just means he has natural ability and is under trained. With proper training he could reach cat A without trouble. A+ might be out of reach. For Amy though the sky is the limit, those numbers for a female is definitely elite level and she is naturally well suited for ultra endurance if she can learn to eat on the go.

You guys are very fit, regardless of the numbers. Congrats! I agree with the other comments that comparison with the VO2 max of other elite athletes may be very dependent on the equipment. However, the comparison between Amy and Kyle is relevant. I think Kyle has more potential upside for improving his VO2 max since, although he is fit, as a guy he could shed 5-10 kg if necessary, thus lowering his denominator, while Amy is probably near her healthy low limit. A couple of other comments:
    1. Does Amy's saddle height seem a bit low to you? She still has a lot of knee bend. Maybe this is the randonnee position and is more comfortable for long rides?
    2. My advice is to be careful about coaching and number training. These are great tools for competitors but IMO suck the life out of riding for fun. Who ever shouted "Yippee!" or "Gorgeous!" when they held 250 watts doing hill repeats? The joy you find in your riding adventures is a rare commodity in this world - don't make your riding a chore!

Getting a bike fit and an education on how to train are two important pieces of the puzzle when it come to preparing for APN. The gearing on your bike for APN is important, too. Have you given it any thought? A gravel bike with mountain bike gearing is probably ideal, i.e., a wide range cassette ranging from 10 or 11 to 40+ and a crankset with two chainrings one being 38 and the other being 24. Will this bike sponsor you say you have set you up with this? I hope so! I also suggest that after you design your APN route that you consolidate it into a 550 or 600k route that you and Kyle ride together about 4 weeks before you actually ride APN. You won't believe the confidence you will gain for the big event by doing a tune up ride first. Over half the APN route you will already know before you do it for real.

Two different measurements. One is your natural cardio potential, the other is your current training level (which is somewhat dependent on the former). You can have a high VO2max and be untrained. With a proper training plan they will likely see FTP jump up significantly. At the moment all they do is endurance and the occasional short hill climb so the FTP isn't what it could be. Also remember that it is based on body weight and she weighs like 45kg.

It’s unusual, but not surprising given their cycling history. Through a LOT of low intensity cycling, Amy and Kyle have turned themselves into “all day diesels”, with a VERY strong aerobic base. Add in some top end from a few months of structured threshold and VO2Max efforts, and they will be far more rounded cyclists.

    • @andrewmcalister3462
      @andrewmcalister3462 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Most cyclists will just improve by adding more volume, and don’t need a VO2Max test to tell them that. But Amy and Kyle already do a LOT of volume, so the question becomes what should they add next?
Power-duration curves tell you quite a lot, but are partly based on natural genetics, and partly on your recent training. Some people are natural sprinters, and some are natural marathoners. Amy and Kyle seem to have pretty flat PD curves, but this is not surprising as they have been doing a LOT of low intensity riding. Doing a VO2Max test allows you to peek under the hood and see what they might be capable of, with a change of training regime, and what types of training should be prescribed. Should they be doing more threshold training? Or more VO2Max efforts?
Don’t get me wrong, most people don’t NEED to test like this, and you can get a reasonable idea just from PD. But testing and PD gives you more than PD alone.
