All I could think during this review is, "r/BatmanArkham makes more sense now." That Black Bat mod made me mad, though. That looked like a work of love.
As a Black Bat pulp fan, I actually seen and heard of this film when it was coming out. Sucks that it was clearly only made to cash in on Dark Knight Rises. I really wanted a good Black Bat movie.
Black Bat is in the public domain, so I guess just about anyone could try their hand at making a movie about him. And anybody who does has a very good chance of making a better movie than this one.
What's funny is how this Black Bat in this movie looks exactly like the Wildstorm/DC character Midnighter, who himself was also a Batman-inspired character and is set to make a live-action debut in an upcoming Authority movie set in James Gunn's DCU
Bro don't kid yourself. Midnighter is batman without ears. Neither him or batman himself have a super unique costume. It's funny that midnighter, a batman ripoff is gonna be in an official movie though I guess and that was your point right?
I wish Snyder would make DC movies. Gunn has talent, but his liberalism makes him awful for DC since DC characters tend to hold more conservative values.
@@cowel8734 Agreed. But Gunn is the one raking in money and positive views from fans after 10 years of Snyder's broody and slooty emo angst so unless WB actually cares, they'll let Gunn finger every obscure character until they wish to be terminated.
I am a major comics geek, but had never heard of the "Black Bat." But thanks to you, I cannot unknow it. I found the movie on Amazon Prime Video, and now I must watch it. :)
Both Thrilling's Black Bat and National/DC's Batman debuted in 1939. The pulp and comic publishers agreed to avoid suing each other by staying out of each other's area: The Black Bat would not appear in comics, and Batman would not appear in the pulps. However, before either of them Johnston McCulley (the creator of Zorro) wrote about The Bat, using the name "C.K.M. Scanlon," though nothing much seems to have ever been done with that character.
The script is an adaptation of the origin story pulp story of way back when in the original Black Bat pulp magazine. It's in the internet Archive iirc, it's beat by beat the original pulp. It was a cool series of pulp stories, he used to leave a sticker with a bat to let the police know who he killed.
I love these kinds of studios, They take old obscure public domain superheroes that's JUUUUUST similar enough to popular characters (for the sake of covering their asses legally I assume) and make shitty movies with them that are totally not terrible knockoffs of Marvel/DC like nobody could tell. Their main target audience are clueless parents who want to make a cheap gift DVD for their Batman-obsessed child and people who just like shitty movies. I think the sheer arrogance of that alone is the most entertaining part of these movies. I know of this and one called Captain Battle (based on an obscure Golden Age superhero, but let's be honest about what it really is, it's a "we have Captain America at home" movie) and there's probably a lot more.
I actually am vaguely aware of Captain Battle, and am genuinely surprised more Patriotic Heroes he haven't been mined from public domain for Captain America rip off flicks.

It feels weird knowing how Black Bat actually predated the Batman, with exception that the guy literally uses guns to dispose his enemies. The dude’s literally the Punisher in a batman costume with no bat ears and is often confused by the Man joke from R/arkham
Bats! There are Bats everywhere, Alex! Who could forget the Knight Watchmen, the Batman ripoff made by Image Comics who teamed up with the Ninja Turtles one time and was also a completely different guy named Galahad? Good times.
Good review to a ... not so good film of a Batman/Daredevil Character older than the mentioned two. Oh and the pulp Covers are so awesome... man those paintings are great. Love the old time covers... today with mostly ugly photo montages... so lame. They could have sold the movie with a proper painting on the cover :) The outro was unexpected, and very apreciated. Good to see the actors.
They ripped off The Black Bat, The Shadow, and Zorro in an effort to cash in on the Superman craze of the time. Even the first story they came out with was a 1 to 1 copy of a Shadow story that came out just one year prior. Superheroes were built on a longstanding dynasty of plagiarism, in fact all art is.
@@PunkcartoonsAfter all, Star Wars is pretty much just Seven Samurai and Hidden Fortress + Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. Nothing is original... and that's okay.

I imagine the ideal black bat movie is set in the 30’s, like hone in on the pulpy fiction it was based on, instead of trying to copy the dark knight. Have it be black and white, people use tommy guns, and of course the radio announcer guy at the start.

Look up Johnston McCulley's 1934 pulp hero code-named the Bat for Popular Detective Magazine. Johnston McCulley is the creator of Zorro.
