  • It's time for a change of focus this week with my drawing of this Stromanthe Triostar, one of my houseplants. It's a nice change of pace from drawing fur and feathers all the time and shows how smooth paper is very well suited to this subject matter.
    LIST OF COLOURS USED:
Faber-Castell Polychromos - Ivory, Earth Green, Chrome Oxide Green, India Red, Warm Grey VI
    Derwent Lightfast - Salmon, Heather
    Derwent Coloursoft - Red
    Derwent Drawing - Smoke Blue
    Caran D'Ache Luminance - Olive Brown 10%
Thank you for watching my video. Please leave a comment down below, like my video with a "thumbs up" and subscribe to my channel. I upload a new art video every week, and work primarily in coloured pencil and traditional gouache paint. My focus is wildlife as I have a passion for conservation and biology, but I also do pet portraits and "how to" videos as well.

I envy your botanical skills! My brain simply doesn't comprehend all the subtle value changes and textures and all the different shades of green... Greens are the bane of my existence.
Also, I'm intrigued by your ability to achieve such accurate colors with so few pencils. I'd probably have gotten out 50+ pencils for this lmao. I'm not joking. I've used as much as 80 pencils for a single piece 😂😂

You are too kind, thank you. I can't really account for how I can get accurate colours, I did mix colours a lot as a kid which has potentially helped. I think working with a limited colour palette can be very helpful in that way, because it forces you to make the colours.

I found that Polychromos does have some nice pinks that has an excellent lightfast rating. They must be using PR122(Pigment Red 122) which is actually pretty good lightfastness even in watercolor.

the light colored Derwent lightfast pencils make excellent blending pencils, in my opinion much better than the 'colorless" blenders. they are so soft and gently toned, as you used the salmon one. lovely drawing as always.

I haven't used any of the colourless blenders to compare, but I do agree that those lighter tones do blend out quite seamlessly. Thank you.
