    Couldn't disagree more. Kermode keeps calling Eyes Wide Shut an erotic thriller (which is what the movie's marketing initially suggested), when clearly it isn't. If anything, Eyes Wide Shut is about the facade of erotica, and the darkness lurking beneath sexual fantasies. Dr. Bill attempts to satisfy those fantasies, only to be neutered and emasculated at every turn because he isn't one of the affluent elite. Eyes Wide Shut isn't just an examination of gender politics and marriage, but an exploration of an entire class system which views sex as a commodity. In an era where we now know about the insidious activities of Weinstein and Epstein, it's aged like a fine wine.

    One of kermodes worst takes. The worst criticism is saying the orgy is too tame when Sydney Pollacks character tells Bill everything you saw was fake. For all we know nobody was even having sex. It’s masterful fine line between reality and dream sequence. The audience and bill will never truly know what they saw and it’s brilliant. A masterpiece of course

      Eyes Wide Shut can leave you cold if you are not a Kubrick fan. It certainly is a film that you need to see many times, preferably in a short period of time, and also during your whole lifetime because you see and understand different things at different stages of your life.
      It has even more layers than any other film he made. It's a film that leaves even the most genius person humble after researching everything there is to this film, and I don't mean the easily found analyzes etc. but things that are based on numerology, symbology and subliminal messages and symbols.
      People who judge it as Kubrick's worst film are either simple, or more likely know that telling the truths inside this film are really dangerous.
      I truly hope people would research this film more. Kubrick researched secret societies, occultism etc. his whole life, he had large network of informers and he was one of the most intelligent man alive, and one of the most hard working perfectionist. He had complete artistic freedom, without it this film could not have been made. And it's on Guinness world records for longest filming time. And it still amazes me how this is possible.

    First saw this film the day it opened in September 1999. Loved it then, and I love it now. Happily saw the re-release in November 2019, it was a sold out screening, and at the age of 35 I was probably the oldest audience member there. You could hear a pin drop throughout that screening. Everyone sat there mesmerised by this film. One of Kubrick’s best.

      Weirdly, in films before Eyes Wide Shut such as Rain Man, and films (immediately) after Eyes Wide Shut such as Magnolia, Cruise proved he could act. Maybe Kubrick's routine of doing like 60 takes for each shot sucked the life out of him. Or maybe the dialogue is so flat and witless he just felt he had nothing to work with.

    • @ninagray4441
      @ninagray4441 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree, Fear and Desire is bad, though Kubrick himself said it was him getting to grips with making films and not worth bothering with. Spartacus is also fairly rum, though it was never meant to be a Kubrick film.

    I disagree this movie is a masterpiece. Mind you is it in the same league as 2001 or The Shining. No. But in the context of the 90's it makes a good bookend. The film shouldn't be viewed literally as a rational piece of work but rather as a surreal nightmare. It's an underbelly, beneath an underbelly. At his best or worse his movies exist at a subconscious level. They play like puzzles instead of a movie with exposition or a definitive meaning. But to each his own.

  • @amanred9337
    @amanred9337 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I think it's better than he's giving the film credit for. Granted it wasn't his best film but I think it was more than just an "erotic thriller." This was how the film was marketed. It was actually more about secret societies and what goes on behind the scenes that the majority of people don't know about.

      I really would say the relationship stuff and all the bits about the secret society all feed into the same themes about secrecy, the things people know and don't talk about or see and not fully realize, and really about how you can seem so close to someone but a simple new wrinkle in a relationship can create a vivid new distance and fracture between the two of you.

  • @fossilmatic
    @fossilmatic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think the film makes many people uncomfortable on a variety of levels; “erotica” vs porn, social privilege vs intellectual exclusivity; the relationship between fame and fiction; the audiences ‘ownership” of celebrity; and above all, the distance that cinema allows the viewer from any true sense of responsibility vs easy “empathy”. I think this is a consistent theme throughout Kubrick’s work. An intention seen from Killers Kiss through 2001 to Barry Lyndon, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket and, finally, Eyes Wide Shut. That is what he uses the subversion of genre to achieve, be it the war movie in serious or satirical mode, the historical drama, or the more “pulp” movie genres of horror/thriller/dystopia. Always to be considered is the risk he is taking when you take into account other contemporary movies in those genres. You never leave a Kubrick movie knowing an answer, but rather, you are left with a question about the art of cinema that may last as long as your recollection of the film.

  • @blackpeter70
    @blackpeter70 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If for no other reason, I admire Kubrick's style, and command of the camera. The colours used in this film are absolutely sumptuous, no OTT performances, but I just wish there was a little more to the thriller aspect of the plot. After all of the brou-ha-ha and secrecy died down, I did expect to be gobsmacked, and I was - just not how I thought I would be. And all we get to see of Nicole is her bum? I'll watch Billy Bathgate again, I guess.
    But I do love this film.

    The orgy isn't the point of the movie. The part where the girl redeems Bill is. Any review of this movie that says, "orgy, orgy, orgy, orgy" is really dumb. However, many people don't like this movie. It's slow, it's weird, Bill and Alice don't have sex with everybody they meet. I think that is what bothers a certain type of reviewer.

    • @Slarti
      @Slarti 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly!
      The orgy is really not important at all, it's just a small aspect of an otherwise very film with plenty of depth.

    • @watermelonlalala
      @watermelonlalala 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Slarti Well, the cult and the IDEA of sex is important and "what kind of charade ends up with somebody dead?" is important. Obviously, the whole first part of the movie leads up to Bill walking in the door of the orgy, which is where he wanted to go. I read loads online reviews of EWS when it came out. Nobody liked the orgy scene. This movie isn't about giving people what they like, which is one of the things I hold against Kubrick. He takes Cruise and Kidman and makes them not very likable. Even the kids in SK's movies aren't very likable. Kubrick seemed to be interested in bugging people, and EWS bugged the typical movie reviewer types more than it bugged anybody else. Same as 2001, when it first came out.

    • @zxbc1
      @zxbc1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the orgy sequence was actually very well done. The whole film was a depiction of his own psyche and how he imagines things, not to be taken as literal events. The orgy needs to be lavish and prolonged as he imagines it, because the pacing of the film needs to be consistent. If you can, imagine an orgy scene that's "cut short" like Mark demands - it would feel completely irregular in the way the film is laid out and would actually make the flow worse. The word is that there was already 20 or so minutes cut from the film, some of which must have been among the sexually explicit ones. I think more cuts would totally ruin the film, which has a central theme revolving around the indulgence of one's imagination and the hypnotic qualities of it. Cutting more and rushing through it would diminish the art.

    There's is a huge difference between watch the film projected at the old ciné and watching it on DVD. All the grain of the film stock is missing off the DVD and it loses a lot in terms of lighting and atmosphere. The whole film was push developed to get that dream look and its missing from all transfers.
