This is a review from you guys that's gonna be a classic. Great commentary, fun vibe, and your guys conflicting opinions on the movie give a great insight on how polazing this film has always been. Love being able to watch these a day early--see you guys next week
Given current events you really start to wonder if Stanley was exposing another world regarding the powerful and those that can get away with everything.
None of what is in this movie seems to happen much in real life. It's as if you paid no attention to the professions of the characters, you think every surgeon or lawyer who works for rich people is some kind of billionaire or millionaire who loves murdering people and killing prostitutes? You think rich people who are committing crimes aren't doing more than hiring escorts to have sex with one another, or having drug fueled sex with escorts, which is all that is shown in the movie?
I remember when this came out. My favourite review at the time was titled Eyes Wide Shit. But it’s clearly been reappraised, as all are and should be. You guys are the most versatile reviewers on all of TH-cam. Nobody else has as diverse a “portfolio” as you guys
As this is a film about fantasies. The asian business men are paying to be caught by the father with his daughter. That's why its so cordial afterwards.
Alice told Bill she would leave him for some other guy if the guy just said the word. I don't blame Bill for saying, "Well, screw you, I will throw you back where you came from." Reminds me of a case I knew of where a girl showed her boyfriend a picture of his ex-wife and said, "If she wanted you back, would you go?" and he said, "Yes, I would." Then, the girlfriend left him.
Great video, guys. EWS is one of the few Kubrick films I only like instead of love. I hardly rewatch it anymore because the inane conspiracy theories (I don't dare to scroll down to the other comments) have spoiled much of its appeal for me. By the way, Kubrick's daughter Katherina has stated he doesn't have a cameo in the film--the bearded man in the bar just looks a bit like him.
It was reportedly Harvey Keitel who had to do all the takes of walking through the door (although I expect Cruise suffered similarly). Keitel told Kubrick "I'm outta here, you're f***ing crazy" and quit after a crazy number of takes, deeming the treatment disrespectful. Keitel never told the full story in interviews but told Gary Oldman and he related it later.
I wonder if Kubrick changed later in his career, people who worked on his later movies don't really mention that behavior or having to do a massive number of takes for simple things
"I dont mind my face on Nicole Kidman's ass" 😆 Classic Iain. Despite Kubrick being my director I just dont enjoy this movie, but have never been able to put my finger on why.
Todd Field (Nightingale) is the director of In The Bedroom (great film) and Little Children (pretty great film). He did another film recently that I haven't seen

OTSR time! Have a good one, Shelfers! 👊👊👊 Part 2 of The Wasteland Shelfer (part 1 in The Relic comments): The Lone Shelfer places his viewing device with OTSR playing on the passenger side of his Wasteland Buggy. The device still playing, with Gary and Iain discussing the pain and suffering of Hellraiser Judgment. The Lone Shelfer shifts his buggy into first gear and sets off as more of the desert wastes await. Now, with plenty of fuel, our Lone Shelfer thinks he can finally make it to his first pit stop, where they may have information on the fabled sanctuary he seeks. Rumour has it of a town that provides plenty of fresh drinking water and WIFI, some have even muttered the name "Shelferville". Who could have set up such an oasis in this irradiated world? We must find out, there's only so many RADS our Lone Shelfer can take....
Eyes wide shut is a favorite movie of mine. I am trying to think of similar movies in style, tone, story. I gotta admit it is a pretty tricky task, these are kinda ranked in similarity. Feel free to expand the list please! Rosemarys baby 1968. The Ninth Gate 1999. Under the Silver Lake 2018. The devil rides out 1968. Gilda 1946. The neon demon 2016.
Ian is correct. Someone who is ODing on heroin is not going to be responsive. They aren't just taking a nappy poo. She would still be breathing, however it would likely be agonal breathing, very gaspy and groany sounding. Almost asthmatic. Very likely there would be vomit as well. She was waaaaaay too pretty for someone who is ODing on an opioid.
Iain, Tom Cruise was 40 years old in this film all they cut from the north american release from my recollection of the papers at the time was they edited Tom's penis out and it cost as much as it did to put Godzilla in the Roland Emerich movie.
Cruise was 34 when shooting began in november 1996. They didn't cut anything from the USA release but did block some of the sexual activity in the orgy scene with CGI people: th-cam.com/video/IJ3NHt4v8WY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_z5iiBz8xFItymbz
I bunked off sixth form got massively stoned and went to see this at the cinema because it was the last Kubrick film. It's not up there with his other classics but its way better than say Lolita.
It is one of the most interesting Kubrick films, especially for all around the production and making of the movie, crazy stuff, and includes a lot of simbolism, even those scenes that look like nonsense or inconsequential, serve to show other aspects of perversion outside the main character guiding the audience, the way Gary and Iain each aproach the film on their own, show how perspective or expectation affect the interpretation and enjoyment, indeed was a mistake the way studio ended selling the movie and the perception the film has even after all this years
If you haven't seen it yet, watch "The Northman" Since youre on a Nicole Kidman kick. Just watch it with the knowledge that its a fantasy. I wish I had known that going in, Inwould have enjoyed it more. I thought it was going to be a gritty real viking period piece, but its definitely a mythological fantasy.
It was one of those movies i felt meh about but then after watching it.. it began to grown in my mind and then I loved it. It seemes like Kubrick wanted to help get Kidman out of scientology and knew that hed be putting their relationship at risk. But it made it work so well.

There is no way I could sit through this bore ever again, whereas I never tire of Barry Lyndon. Well, mine is. Which makes this movie just a bit embarrassing. Shrug. It just gave me the impression that whoever wrote this or perhaps Kubrick himself had led a very sheltered life.
Eyes Wide Shut is an absolute masterpiece. The novella it's based on in English means dream story so that makes me wonder when watching the film just have much is real and how much is a dream? How much is taking place only in Bill's mind. I think that's up to each person to interpret.
