    If you put yourself in a situation that a 3rd party, outside of your marriage, thinks that you will be intimate with them, that they have a chance, then you’ve already cheated.
    I realized this early in my happy marriage of 41 years.
    If it’s something you wouldn’t want your partner to know, then you shouldn’t be doing it.
    Using fantasy to keep a marriage spicy, can be useful. But only if it’s not obsessive.
    Someone told me as a young married woman, that if you ever feel bored in your relationship, just imagine in your head, them being romantic or having sex with another person.
    It will snap you out of that shit, if you have any love for your partner.

    Kubrick films are decades ahead of what most of humanity can really comprehend.
    The Shining, A Clockwork Orange etc. are much easier films to understand, mostly because those are entertaining without really understanding the deeper levels.
    Eyes Wide Shut however is much harder to really comprehend. The surface story ofcourse is easy, and the level just before the surface is also what many find and understands, but what really is under the rainbow, thats much harder to find out than in his previous films.
    I think Kubrick probably knew this could be his last film, and so he inserted lots of information, several deeper levels and made his another great work of alchemy. However we are probably going to have to wait for a long time for public to catch this as people have on The Shining, which benefits from having so many underline topics that at least one of them resonates with every people and so people have that catching point of exploring further. In Eyes Wide Shut we have ascended to a higher level in a way, and understanding its levels and messages needs knowledge and lots of previous thinking on the subjects addressed.
    I urge everybody to research Eyes Wide Shut, read analysis, watch youtube videos and make this your yearly habit, because this film is like different film everytime you get older and wiser. It is a work of alchemy that transform its audience.

      @@elizabethhenderson3747 Gotta say your take on Kubrick is BS. Kubrick predicted 911 since 2001 in every film. Had covid19 in his films since Lolita. Have JFK assassination from Clockwork Orange onward. And countless other examples like that.
      And he had Russia-Ukraine war at least in EWS, probably also in Full Metal Jacket. He predicted Obama in FMJ, Bush Jr. in 2001 A Space Odyssey.
      He predicted St.Helens explosion and flooding in The Shining. Show that it was scalar wave tech that was used to cause that and also cause 911.
      EWS predicted Diana's assassiation, Epstein+Maxwell, Clintons and Bill Gates as connected to it, and outed at least a dozen people from Hollywood and politics etc.
      Most people who think they know Kubrick don't know anything really.
      On the deeper levels it's too hard to communicate through writing.

    So I have this conspiracy theory that maybe Kidman is also one of the girls in the orgy... I mean, come to think of it how on earth was her dream so spot on with what was happening in the ritual.... and the mask, how did she get that?.... This film is damn confusing...

    Spot on. You might think flirting and fantasizing are as safe as sneaking your way into a party for a good time but you'll soon realize you're in over your head. Marriage involves the intertwining of 2 souls, hearts, and bodies; fidelio; faithful marriage love. Cheating is just as much about the heart as it is the bedroom. The two quickly realize how lucky they are to learn the lesson before it goes too far.

    I kinda chuckled near the last half hour or so when Tom Cruise’s character bought the newspaper when the man was following him. When he goes into the coffee shop to hide(kinda) and on the newspaper cover it says “Lucky to be alive”. So obvious, especially for a Stanley Kubrick movie. It had to be put there for a little wink and nod.

    I agree with a lot of what you said. I was initially disappointed with this film when I saw it as a 17 year-old in 1999. Having grown up a bit, I revisited it this week. I movie left me feeling more or less the same as it did 22 years ago, but I understood the themes much better. The film is gorgeous, yes, but the main flaw is that while there is much to analyze and unpack from this film, it just isn't terribly exciting to watch and a lot of the more dramatic moments don't land as well as they could have.

  • @ACHorne-ky2tl
    @ACHorne-ky2tl ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Kubrick put the obvious "key" right up front as to what the film is about. The password is "Fidelio", i.e. fidelity, and the role of thought and action in a marriage/relationship. It also looks at the consequences of one's thoughts and actions (as the commentator says) on others. As is usual with Kubrick, there is a lot of other stuff going on, but I think this is the central motif.

I appreciate your analysis, maybe I'll go back and fast forward to the resolution scene you describe. I totally agree about the orgy scene being overkill. Kubrick juxtaposed nudity and terror in A Clockwork orange as well. I liked Kubricks poke at the medical profession, and their abuse of status and callous detachment from humanity, the Cruise character constantly flashing his medical ID to commit petty fraud. Good review :)

    At the end of the day (film), the Doctor nor his wife committed no adultery. Certainly, if they had actually committed adultery, that IS worse than just "thinking about committing adultery". Thinking about committing adultery and actually committing adultery are NOT THE SAME. Both characters remained faithful to one another. Otherwise, each and everyone of us who viewed the movie could be guilty of committing adultery simply because we watched the movie.

    • @BryanLomax
      @BryanLomax  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jesus says, "Any man who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart". The point is, if you are thinking about another, then you are not thinking about the one you are with, and that is corrosive to any relationship. This, to me, is what the film is looking at.

    • @josephrohland5604
      @josephrohland5604 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BryanLomax Corrosive, if continuous...yes. The remedy to their problem was stated by Alice at the end of the movie. Jesus was plainly talking to the super-Religious who believed they themselves were perfect by following the Old Covenant Law. He was using "strictness" to bring down the egos of these super-religious, to put them in their place. Your "corrosive" answer is much more to the point.

    • @BryanLomax
      @BryanLomax  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@josephrohland5604 your reading of that passage is spot on, for sure, but I think it still applies to this film because the film is about sin in general. He judges her for having lustful thoughts, which is why he goes out into the night on his little 'adventure', only to do the very thing he's judging his wife for. Both of them need to start taking their thoughts captive if their marriage is to survive. And, just like the religious leaders that Jesus was talking to, each one needs to examine their own heart before placing the blame onto the other person.

    I rewatched this movie last night, My theory? The world is a giant orgy, Bill has been living in a world of comfortable illusion, illusions about his marriage that are demolished during the scene where Kidman confesses her fantasy. A theme in Kubrick's films is that people lie a lot. Often the dialogue is banal and the actual content is people lying to each other. We see this A LOT in this film. Notice that there are several scenes where people finally tell Bill some uncomfortable truths...these scenes always get interrupted by phone calls or some other pointless distraction. This allows Bill to return to his comfortable fantasy. Lastly, the big lie that is constant throughout the film...Christmas. What is Christmas,? a giant lie about a virgin birth. Its a lie we tell Children to shield them from the truth. The title says it all "Eyes wide Shut", Bill doesn't want to see the reality that is right in front of him. I am struck that Cruise actually appears child like during much of the film. There are many scenes where grownups seem to be patiently explaining truths to Bill that he slowly, gradually begins to comprehend. I do agree that it is a little long and a bit slow...thats ok just more to love. Lastly, there is a scene in the Sonata cafe where there is a man sitting in the table behind Cruise and Nick Nightingale who looks a hell of a lot like Kubrick. Does anyone know if this is Kubrick? I know Hitchcock often made an appearance in his films, don't know if Kubrick pulled that stunt. There is a photograph of Kubrick that gets snuck into the sequel to 2001 but that is more of an homage by a different director.
