Parental Leave Tips For Dads: Benefits For Dads!

  • FMLA is the only federal benefit that protects dads (and all other new parents) in the US. It offers 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave.
    Let’s break that down.
-12 weeks: All new parents, including dads and other non-birthing parents, get up to 12 weeks off when they welcome a baby into their family.
You have to take those 12 weeks within one year of your baby’s birthday or adoption or foster date, and you don’t have to take it all at once.
-Job-protected: That means you can take 12 weeks off and you cannot be discriminated against for taking that time off. You can’t get fired or get a demotion or get written up for taking time off as long as you give your manager a reasonable head’s up that you won’t be coming to work.
-Unpaid: So you can take 12 weeks off, but unless you live in a state that offers paid family leave or your employer offers paid family leave or you’ve purchased short-term disability, your time off will be unpaid. So start saving now, which I know is not easy when you’re having a baby.
And because I’m not afraid to get political over here. Keep that in mind next time you vote. My PSA is to vote for candidates that support federal and state paid family leave (as well as common sense gun laws), which really should not actually be political.
Send this to a dad-to-be in your life!
