  • We have Thunderbolt 3 and Threadripper Two working together, on our Gigabyte X399 Aorus Xtreme Motherboard! However, we need a Bios Update for full integration! Maybe?
    To Purchase:
1.) Gigabyte GC-Titan Ridge (Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 PCIe Card Component)
    amzn.to/2EIcIkQ
2.) Atech Flash BlackJet Cinema Dock
    amzn.to/31tlqN0
The Atech Flash BlackJet Cinema Dock is a Thunderbolt 3 Media Dock.

The Gigabyte Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 AIC Driver is Windows 10 64 bit only! This AIC uses the Intel DSL7540 Thunderbolt 3 controller.
What motherboard is compatible with this???
    - The GIGABYTE GC-Titan Ridge (Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 PCIe Card Component) should work with any Motherboard which has the Thunderbolt 3 Header... and Bios support. Without those? Requires a 4 Lane PCIe 3.0 Slot. How to make it work? Jump Pins 3 to 5. Keeps card alive. No legacy support. Meaning, Thunderbolt 3 only.
    Here's the part we used:
3.) Duttek (2-Pack) 4.5CM 4 Pin 2.54mm Pitch Separate Motherboard Header PCB Cable Male to Female Extender Extension Dupont Jumper Wires Cable 8pcs/Pack (4Pin M/F)
    amzn.to/34yhiNL

Update Note (2-16-2019): We've tried this Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 AIC in a Ryzen - No go!
Test System: MSI X370 XPOWER Gaming Titanium AMD Ryzen X370 DDR4 ATX Motherboard + Ryzen 1800X CPU & AMD WX 7100 GPU.
    1.) PCIe 3.0 Slot x8 [PCI_E4] - No Boot
2.) PCIe 2.0 Slot x4 [PCI_E6] - Boots but Video blinks; Resolution changes; Unusable. Could not even get to try installing Driver. Tried in both available PCIe Slots - With and without Jumping Pins 3 to 5 on the GPIO Thunderbolt Header. Made no difference.
If You've read all of this, we're going to update with another Thunderbolt 3 Video using 2 different Audio Interfaces after we Build the AMD Ryzen Threadripper III TRX40 Chipset Build! Stay tuned! That Platform has Bios support!

I'm certain because it's a tad more finicky or should I say "difficult". I admit TR4 is more of a challenge and that is what makes it so much more enjoyable. I just install CG-Titan Ridge in my system. (Ryzen 5-2600 and Asus X470 Tuf Gaming). No BIOS setup needed. Nothing. Just Plug the Card in PCIe 4X and jump the THB-C cable Pins 3 and 5 togheter. Install drivers and done! No issues. My audio interface is a Apollo Twin Duo Thunderbolt. Just Works. I´m very Happy! Adios, Apple!

This may answer both of my new build questions at once: Ryzen vs Intel, and Thunderbolt 3 on PC. Above Noslen nonÔ describes a fortunate find adding to your great work here, while inadvertently mentioning his "Ryson" / Apollo set up. Rumor has it Ryzen is risky when setting up a powerful low latency audio workstation, have you found that to be true? Also almost every audio interface solution I am researching recommends Thunderbolt 3 over USB 3, whether Apollo Unison, or Focusrite Clarett, any thoughts on this Gill, or Noslen nonÔ?

      Hi@@markshrader7136,
Excellent questions. Thanks for asking! We'll defer to Noslen who has experience regarding Ryzen 3. As for Thunderbolt vs USB3, either way, USB4 is the key to all of this. We're still using USB2 Audio interfaces.
Q: Where do You need the processing power? Are You're EFX, plugins or do You need the DSP EFX from the Audio interface hence Thunderbolt 3? Right now, all of our EFX are plugins like instrument plugins that work like audio libraries, as plugins.
Two big issues with Audio on a Computer are Latency & Noise. Starting with Windows DPC Latency. Managing noise starts with the food chain - clean electrical power. Threadripper is Bang for the Buck. There's more to offer from the Threadripper than the Ryzen 3. *Threadripper 3 is coming, if You can wait.*

      Hi@@willy414576,
Thanks! _We're here to help You have a Successful Build experience!_ Not Thunderbolt 4. USB4. USB4 will incorporate Thunderbolt 3. An enigma with lots of confusion and consternation regarding Thunderbolt 1, 2 & 3. Even USB, as we currently know it, is undergoing naming convention changes. Better to get the FAQs straight from the source... USB Implementers Forum.
Read this Dated March 4, 2019: USB Promoter Group Announces USB4 Specification - USB.org
      - usb.org/sites/default/files/2019-03/USB_PG_USB4_DevUpdate_Announcement_FINAL_20190226.pdf
      SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps (USB 3.2 Gen 2)
      - usb.org/retail
      - www.usb.org/superspeed-usb
The USB 3.2 specification absorbed all prior 3.x specifications. USB 3.2 identifies three transfer rates:
      USB 3.2 Gen 1: SuperSpeed USB [5Gbps]
      USB 3.2 Gen 2: SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps
USB 3.2 Gen 2x2: SuperSpeed USB 20 Gbps
[USB4 - 40 Gbps] Actually throughput will be closer to 30 Gbps due to PCIe 3.0 x4 Spec overhead.
*USB 3.2 and USB4... Now that's confusing!* Remember USB 2.0 and SuperSpeed USB 2.0? Remember when USB even came out? We had to be running Windows 95 OEM Version C to make it work. That's when we all started using the OEM version of Windows, for the latest Drivers. Our motto - Keep it Simple!

This is amazing, something i've really been looking into recently.
I'm about to build a new rig, however, I plan to use that Ryzen 9 processor coming out soon. I'm just wondering if that should work ( I believe so?) - and what Motherboard you would reccommend?
My other question, is that i'm planning to use a TB2 RAID to connect to my system. Now, my Dell XPS15 has TB3 - but it doesn't work with the TB3-TB2 adaptor - is this something thats universal? Or is there something that's limited? It works on MBPs - but not the Dell XPS 9550 ( a TB3 limitation of some hardware in there?)

      Hi Andy_Elvis11,
Thanks! Ryzen 9 - Will TB3 work and what Motherboard to use? Too early to tell on both accounts. We need details on chipsets. x399 is the better route, right now - HEDT. Better Resource allocation. Only works with Thunderbolt 3 Titan Ridge Controller - TB3 - Native support. TB 1&2 - Legacy support. A limitation of Intel validation. Wait for USB4 from USB-IF to get this all working like it should. BTW: Nice Laptop!

What is the full sized displayport on the aic for? Is it to connect a gpu to (input) or to connect a monitor to (output). This is confusing because in the manual it says > "When connecting DisplayPort monitor, if you connect the Mini-DisplayPort cable to the DP IN 1 connector, you must connect the monitor's cable to the DisplayPort connector or Thunderbolt™ 3 connector 1. If you connect the cable to the DP IN 2 connector, you must connect the monitor's cable to Thunderbolt 3 connector 2."

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Franz Pleurmann,
Glad You've asked that Question. Let's keep it simple... The Thunderbolt AIC only 'routes' video. The Video card plugs into the Thunderbolt AIC to be routed out through a Thunderbolt port to the Monitor. Why not just plugin Video directly to the Monitor? How many Monitors have a Thunderbolt port? Seems kind of dumb. Like the emperor has no clothes. But that's my take. The Thunderbolt AIC is suppose to do 3 things. Rout Video, Connect Devices like for Storage and Transfer Power. Two of the three make sense. Hope that helps.

With the Titan Ridge card being PCIe 3.0 x4, is the data bandwidth limited to 3.94GB/s as compared to theoretical thunderbolt bandwidths?
I would assume that the two thunderbolt connections would still move data pretty fast in real world usage.

      J Harris,
Excellent point! We'd have to answer that question with a question... *How does Titan Ridge ThunderBolt 3 achieve 40GBit/s when PCIe 3.0 x4 is only capable of 30.781GBit/s?* _Yes, still pretty fast!_ These Marketing people at Intel are pretty slick. Like a car salesman. USB4 is going to be interesting to watch how that gets implemented knowing what we now know. A Lot of people are going to be wondering why they cannot get USB4 working in an older Computer. PCIe 3.0 Resources! And to really get things going, we should also see USB4 I/O cards on x8 interfaces. USB-IF has their work cut out for them to meet the expectations of the masses!

    • @tauttechminusmanagedmusic3778
      @tauttechminusmanagedmusic3778 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@BuildOrBuy It does it by mostly not using the PCIe at all. Graphics are patched through the card/ports on the board (Intel). That means the expectation of running storage at 40Gb/s is impossible. For graphics, entirely avoiding the PCIe bus means 8K graphics (and the bit rate beyond PCIe3x4) is possible. In other words, Intel marketing is just as dodgy as Apple's.

We can hope! We can dream.
Titan Ridge card - No Firmware Update; Driver (17.4.77.400) Dated: 9-6-2018.
With USB4 coming, that's when this all gets ironed out. In the mean time - Audio Interface? For Audio - Don't draw power from Interface. Noise can occur. We learned that from using USB Audio Interfaces. A pain to diagnose. All Drivers (Chipset & Video) must be current. Thunderbolt 3 Native support only. No Hot Plug. Device must Enumerate at Boot. It works, for the most part.

      Hi Joel Neibauer,
For most people, short answer, yes. However, Thunderbolt is just 1 Technology to embrace. For Intel, suggest nothing less than X299 Chipset. The 1st issue is the Thunderbolt Technology. Anything Built onto the Motherboard, right now, would be Alpine Ridge Thunderbolt 3. If You wanted the latest Thunderbolt Chipset with latest Firmware, Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 - Add in Card.
Intel has turned the software & firmware over to the Vendors and the Vendors don't seem to be Updating the Firmware. And if You read the TI Winbond comments, even Vendors are having problems getting the Firmware right. Certain Thunderbolt Devices require updated Firmware to work properly. Therein lies the rub. Appears Intel Thunderbolt Certification is about 2 years behind based on existing motherboard support.
An example would be to search the Gigabyte Chineese FTP site and see what's available for products relating to Thunderbolt.
Furthermore, You'll want PCIe Bifurcation for an NVMe RAID. You'll get that on a HEDT Platform like X299 & X399 Chipsets or on a Workstation Platform. Until we get new Chipsets - Coming with PCIe 4.0 & PCIe 5.0, this is it! Options. Good Question - Thanks for Watching!

How does this achieve 40GBit/s over ThunderBolt when PCIe 3.0 x4 is only capable of 30.781GBit/s? And how does the new Mac Pro deliver Bandwidth / Throughput? What Chipset are they Using? Intel? Expect same performance, if it worked. And, how can we measure that to quantify those results to know what is real, actual throughput and what is speced?
Here's a good explanation although be it a brief one...
      macperformanceguide.com/blog/2019/20190128_1352-understanding-Thunderbolt3-bandwidth.html
Back to Your Question... Agreed. Doubt it will work. Only because of Intel not allowing it. Certification Requirements. Bandwidth should be OK on a per Port basis. Will this change? Since USB Forum is suppose to be running the USB Bus, and Thunderbolt is now under their tutelage, let's hope so! Now we need to see someone try it and find out!
Now we're talking... PCIe 3.0. Expect USB4 to be PCIe 4.0, and that's when Thunderbolt should get interesting! When? Crystal Ball guess - Everyone is oddly silent on the matter. 2021? Guessing.

For anyone curious, you can run this card on most platforms without the thunderbolt header on your motherboard by jumping pins 3 and 5 on the THB_C cable included with the card. That way the card thinks it's plugged into your motherboard. Works very well for me on TRX40 Zenith II Extreme with no THB_C header on the board :) If you google it, there is a thread on egpu.io with a post detailing info. As I once thought, the thunderbolt header is merely a form of DRM, to ensure you are using it with an "authorized" board. It's also supposed to handle DP passthrough management, but since you run a DP passthrough cable anyway, it's not really needed. Haven't had any issues yet daisy chaining hard drives, nics, monitors etc

I did a lot of research on the internet about TB3 and AMD and your video was the only one explaining everything detailed. Great job! I purchased an audio interface (apollo twin quad TB3) just to realise that my setup doesnt support TB3. Now Im planning to built a new setup. I will go to US just for this. Threadripper 2990WX 3.0 GHz 32-Core + Gigabyte X399 Designare EX + Gc-titan Ridge. I will proceed carefully with your instructions to make this system going. What RAM do you recomend for this system? and what cpu air x water cooler? I was thinking of the Noctua NH-U14S TR4 but Im not shure if it will be enough for this chipset.
I could built a intel system with a TB3 onboard on the mobo, but the hole thing is just too expensive and the 2990WX outruns intel 9980XE on performance and runs at lower temps aswell.
Thanks for the video, subscribed to your channel.

      Hi Quadra Supply,
Thanks! Details matter! Can You existing Computer handle a Gigabyte Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 card? If not, yes, new system!
All Drivers must be the latest for everything to Register and Enumerate properly! Universal Audio Apollo Twin MKII QUAD 2x6 Thunderbolt Audio Interface? Good choice. With external power? To avoid noise. Yes, TB3 however, no need to add noise issues. Fixing Hum and Popping is like chasing gremlins. We learned that one using USB Audio Interfaces. Anyway... Just remember, USB4 is coming soon! Best Bang for the Buck - Chipset... CPU & Motherboard. The Gigabyte (Intel) Titan Ridge (chipset) Controller is a must.
RAM... Since You're going with the Threadripper 2990 (consider the 2950), do You want Samsung B-Die? Expensive. We're partial to Corsair Vengeance. Not Samsung B-Die but it works. Have successfully used, Kingston Technology HyperX. Still testing other brands. Next Threadripper Build Video we may use Crucial.
Can You live with 64 GB RAM? 128 GBs is finicky until we get more Bios Updates. Use www.PCPartPicker.com to explore Your RAM Options for best price. RAM is no big deal to change out as long as only using 64 GBs. 128 GBs would require removing the CPU Cooler Fans. No big deal. The RAM will slide right under the CPU Cooler. Just elevate CPU Cooler Fans slightly to accommodate RAM. The Foundation though - Chipset to Motherboard to CPU - Now that's a big deal.
Noctua NH-U14S TR4 - Yes! Keep It simple. Plus Add the 2nd Fan, Extra Clips included with Noctua NH-U14S TR4. Every little bit helps. Keeping the Video Card cool is more crucial and has been more problematic than the CPU. We've also successfully used the Noctua 140MM Industrial 3,000 RPM Fans in the Case. Use Motherboard Thermistors to Monitor heat. If they spin up, then you know there's a heat problem. Otherwise, they idle at maybe 600 RPM once fully booted. Set from Bios to avoid extemporaneous software. Which brings up another point...
We'll address *DPC Latency* and other Audio issues in the near future. Good by WiFi! Wired LAN stays - Tweak it - MTUs! Turn off anything green or power saving. No more sleep or hibernate of any kind. Everything stays as High Performance mode. Stay tuned! Sweetwater has just Updated their article on the subject: Solving DPC Latency Issues - www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/solving-dpc-latency-issues/ We're working on a humorous way of demonstrating DPC Latency. We'll see if it gets the message across effectively.
      Thanks for Subscribing!
The Color Balance - That's an interesting topic when using 4 Cameras. Using one Camera is easy. Auto White Balance on 4 Cameras is different on each due to Lighting Temperature. And it changes for same reason. And going to 6 Cameras, You get the idea. We're working on that. We could spend a year on a Video and still need tweaking. You have to make a production decision and move on. Or else You'd never finish. All Cameras should have Custom White Balance set to help avoid that issue or it floats and not in your favor. And given time to warm up a bit once they are turned on. Maybe 30 minutes. What is seen, while Shooting on a small Monitor looks different when Editing on a larger Monitor. Better Shoot, easier Edit. That's 3 Conversations going on at the same time - What the Viewer sees, What the Talking head says and what needs to be done to communicate that message like changing Shots while Talking. Now that's being ambidextrous!
The Wardrobe - Yes! Hawaiian Shirts from 2 Sources. Majority from www.paradiseclothingco.com/ - Mostly Go Barefoot - 100% Cotton. Footwear - us.havaianas.com/ - I knew You'd appreciate that one! Exclusive since 2011! Glad You noticed! That's my style. Appreciate Your Comments! If and when You need help - Ask!

2.) Build Your system while in US. Do Your smoke test and make certain everything works. Give it 24 hours to run. All parts are good for 30 days, to return, so make the most of that time frame - To your advantage.

We cannot Shoot Video or Test right now. Had to do major emergency whole house PEX Repipe. What a mess. Sheetrock dust everywhere on everything not covered. And a bunch of other remodeling (Foundation Repair - Helical Piers, new Medical Grade AC / Furnace) while we're at it. We will be up and running in October, 2019.
The Asus Prime x299 Deluxe II is a solid choice. Ray Morris Built on that platform. He's strictly Intel. However, the x399 Threadripper is a better, solid choice for Resource Allocation. And Thunderbolt works, for the most part, but is finicky. It will get better.
Your RAM - Crucial is a good choice. We like to work within, where someone has a comfort zone, and only steer in a direction when there are better options. Stick with 64 GBs. You can work up to 128 GBS, in time, after a few more Bios Updates. After that, You're looking at an AMD EPYC Machine.
Adobe is a resource hog and will take all the resources You can throw at it.
Your Video card - Even though everything points to NVIDIA, take a close look at AMD WX Pro cards. They are Bang for the Buck in Resources.
Cooler - be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 CPU Cooler - Good choice especially for Audio work. BTW: You might want to line the Case with Sound deadening material if doing Live audio. Let Us know if and when You need any help!

      Hi Andre Ibenz,
Your English is good! AMD can support Intel Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 chipset. However, on Your Motherboard - 1st Requirement - 1 PCIe 3.0 x4 Slot (Video card). MSI B450 Pro Carbon AC - Your Motherboard does not have the Resources for a Gigabyte Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 add in card. Your other Slots are all PCIe 2.0. And an upcoming, yet to be released, USB4 card will not work either. Same requirements. Would You like the details? You need a Motherboard with more Resources.
And the JT1, between the JTPM1 & JUSB1, is not a 5 Pin Thunderbolt Header. Agreed, JT1 is not documented. Shows up in Pics but not in MSI PDF. Curious. Register Your Motherboard and Create a Support ticket with MSI and Ask! Then let Us know what You learn.

For an X399 Motherboard - First - Do You have a Preference on Brand? Next keep in mind, all X399 Motherboards have essentially the same basic layout according to the Chipset.
2 - PCIe 3.0 x16 Slots & 2 - PCIe 3.0 x8 Slots - the 5th or last Slot(s) vary. And there will be 3 PCIe M.2 NVMe Connectors on the Motherboard which use 12 PCIe 3.0 Lanes. Even though You'll have 66 PCIe 3.0 Lanes, they will run out! Use them wisely and plan accordingly.

Hi@@lucasorione8373, The problem is the different Generations of different Technologies. One does not know about the other. A 1 Lane AIC should not affect a 4 Lane AIC. However, here We are! The other problem is the throughput vs burst mode. We've seen the same behavior happen with early version USB 3.0 ports. They too will disconnect. Throughput vs burst mode. It's the Chipset on the AIC. Thanks for Your Comments! Hope this does the job! Please let Us know! If it does, we can thank Tony!

    Alright, here's my experience.
I also have the Gigabyte X399 Auros Xtreme and I instead have the Alpine Ridge card.
I am able to get the card to work in my system, drivers installed and external devices seen within windows after a lot of playing with things. My problem is I can not get my system to stop locking up with the card in my system. For a long time it would totally lock up in windows after 30 seconds or so of running.
I played with my bios settings for a long time. I played with everything and eventually got it working without issue by changing "Power Supply Idle Control" to Typical. After 3 days I turned PC off and swapped coolers and when i turned it back on the issue came back. Resetting bios and changing those settings doesn't solve my problem anymore.
I'm guessing maybe I have a bad board but this isn't bulletproof. I have to decide if I want to swap for the same board or pick something else I guess.

Would not have expected the Alpine Ridge to be such a problem child. Our Titan Ridge performance has been consistent. Right now, best price on Titan Ridge is on eBay via Taiwan. NewEgg is out. Amazon has them, more expensive. Appreciate You sharing Your experience. ...changing "Power Supply Idle Control" to Typical. Good to know. Keep Us posted!
Interesting to note, we had an Alpine Ridge card on Order. Amazon Delivery lost it! Not the first time they lost an Order they were suppose to Deliver. With Your experience, we don't need to try that now. Curious. And the Thunderbolt 3 Saga continues!

@@BuildOrBuy Well, this is still kicking my ass over here. I drove out to microcenter today and swapped my board out with another X399 Auros xtreme and proceeded to rebuild my entire PC. Booted it back up and am still having the same issue where if I have anything plugged into this TB3 card the PC locks up before I can even log into windows (or right after). I played with bios for a long time as well today.
I don't know if my card is faulty, or what but what I did do is order an AsRock thunderbolt 3 AIC. It unfortunately is also based off Alpine Ridge and not Titan Ridge but we will see what happens. I have a feeling I will have to pin my own THB_C cable as this one is the older standard not currently on my motherboard. Hi@@juhthreef,
Keep it Simple and stop beating yourself up! Get a Titan Ridge card. In the mean time, something else you can try - On the Alpine Ridge, Thunderbolt 3, 5 Pin GPIO Header - Jump Pins 3 to 5. This is suppose to work on the Titan Ridge where there is no Thunderbolt support. Don't know if it will make a difference on the Alpine Ridge.
Thunderbolt Platform Sequence Control - Gigabyte does not give color coding. Asus does.
      1. Gnd (Black)

We're going to do a Video using his Motherboard for Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3. In the mean time, I'll reorder the Alpine Ridge card, Amazon lost, and see what happens knowing what you've experienced, we'll be ready for the worst!
BTW: Which PCIe Slot are You using?
Remember: If You go X299 - You'll have 44 PCIe Lanes, using Core i9-7900X, instead of 66 PCIe Lanes on the X399 with any Threadripper CPU. Plus, you'd need a VROC chip if you chose to do RAID on anything above RAID 0. Some things to think about! Keep Us Posted!

      Hi@@juhthreef,
One more thing... We have No Bios support, as of this moment. Intel appears to be 2 years behind on Certification even thought it's suppose to be free Certification. Only the 5 Pin GPIO Header. And there are only 2 - X399 Motherboards with that GPIO Header. Both are Gigabyte. Jump Pins - 3 to 5 or get a Titan Ridge and Jumping those Pins may still be the only option. And on non supported systems, a Titan Ridge appears to be the best option. We only have partial Thunderbolt support. Meaning, GPIO Header but nothing in the Bios as of yet on X399. We can only rely upon what we know by doing and trying. And then report our findings.
What's curious is the purpose of the GPIO Header. That's for status communication, to the Bios, through the SMBus which all PCIe cards can already do through the PCIe connector on Pins 5 & 6 on PCIe connector side B.
      pinouts.ru/Slots/pci_express_pinout.shtml
      www.interfacebus.com/Design_PCI_Express_16x_PinOut.html
      www.adexelec.com/faq.htm#pcikeys
The Component side of the PCI card is the B side and the solder side of the card is the A side.
Stick with the X399 Build! Better resource allocation even though Thunderbolt is still a work in progress! And Thunderbolt is only one piece of the puzzle.

1.) Utility: ThunderboltEX 3 firmware update tool - Version 1-0-0-15
      - Dated 11/10/2017 - Rar File. There is NO documentation within that file to know what's going on nor any way to know what NVM Firmware is provided. Noticed a GPIOWrite directory. Read the chip1_Fw.dat file. Could only make out Power State. Unable to decipher anything else.
2.) Hotfix: Intel Thunderbolt Driver for Windows 10 64-bit - Zip file. release notes aka Thunderbolt Software Release Notes - Appears to be same file as Gigabyte provides which is from Intel. This Asus driver supports Alpine Ridge only! Version 17-2-71-250.

Gigabyte has a separate Thunderbolt Firmware Update Tool Utility listed for the Alpine Ridge but not the Titan Ridge. The Titan Ridge readme file appears to also be able to update Firmware. Cannot confirm.
The Alpine Ridge Firmware Update Tool is much older dated 04/13/2017 - Version: B16-1118-1 (Firmware 21 + TI 1.7). Still newer NVM Firmware than what You have, if applicable. @BuildOrBuy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi@@harrysaini9412,
After reading your message again. For clarity... We answer Questions posted on a Video as it pertains to the Video. Focus on the Chipset Controller - Gigabyte Titan Ridge. And none of the others. The previous, explicit, instructions are for the Gigabyte Titan Ridge to work on Your Gigabyte Aorus Gaming 3 Motherboard.
You mean specifically, You have an ASUS ThunderboltEX 3 controller? And You want to use that ASUS ThunderboltEX 3 Controller on a Gigabyte Aorus Gaming 3 Motherboard as well as an Asus Prime z370 A Motherboard... If You have an ASUS ThunderboltEX 3 controller, keep it on an ASUS motherboard.
Are You asking If the ASUS ThunderboltEX 3 controller will work in the Gigabyte Motherboard like it works in the ASUS Motherboard? Doubtful. Alpine Ridge (ASUS ThunderboltEX 3) vs the Titan Ridge (Gigabyte Titan Ridge) controller. The Gigabyte Titan Ridge is using the latest Intel DSL7540 Thunderbolt 3 controller and appears to be the most compatible with everything, right now. Your results may vary. We have no experience with any of the Alpine Ridge controller chipsets, only the Gigabyte Titan Ridge. The Alpine Ridge controller is becoming obsolete.
The issue with compatibility goes much deeper than the Chipset controller. Firmware & Drivers. First, Bios support or more specifically PCIe Device Enumeration. Second, Firmware being the next most crucial. Many Users are having problems with getting Thunderbolt working. Intel appears to be 2 years behind on Thunderbolt Certification. Both Gigabyte and Intel are pointing fingers at each other leaving Us, Users in the lurch.
Getting Thunderbolt working requires a x4 PCIe 3.0 Slot. From there, we've documented 3 Levels of Support, we define as:
1.) Full Support - Bios PCIe Device Enumeration; GPIO 5-Pin Header + USB 2.0 Header present
2.) Partial Support - No Bios support; GPIO 5-Pin Header present + USB 2.0 Header
3.) No Support - No Bios support; No GPIO 5-Pin Header present
The GPIO 5-Pin Header is for SMBus communication which seems redundant since I/O cards do that already on PCIe Side B Connector, Pins 5 & 6. On the GPIO 5-Pin Header, Jumping Pins 3 to 5 seems to keep the Card alive. Which, if in the Bios, would be Force Power to Pin 3 aka Set in Bios "GPIO3 Force Pwr" to True. Odd and curious.
Some Users with No support appear to be having better luck getting Thunderbolt 3 working than those with Full Support. On the X399 Chipset, there are only 2 motherboards having, what we define as, Partial Support. Both are from Gigabyte. They are the X399 Aorus Xtreme & X399 Designare EX which have the GPIO 5-Pin Header.

      pcisig.com/specifications/pciexpress/
      pinouts.ru/Slots/pci_express_pinout.shtml
And since USB4 has been announced, this will change everything by the end of 2020. That's not too far off in the distant future.
Looks like we're going to have to get a Gigabyte Alpine Ridge controller and test and see what happens... NOT! The Technology is changing rapidly... Forward! Hope this clarification helps You sort out the Technology! Summation: Either get a Gigabyte Titan Ridge card now or wait for USB4 later.

Are You a Musician? If so, which Thunderbolt version (1, 2 or 3) are You using on your Audio Interface, right now? Why ask? For Thunderbolt 3, there are 2 Controller Chipsets. Even though, Titan Ridge is suppose to be backwards compatible, according to Intel. We need a Firmware Update for that to happen, as advertised by Intel. Tried it first with the CD drivers. Thunderbolt controller shows up consistently in System Devices, but no systray app. The app is installed and can run it. It shows everything that should be there, incl. connected devices, but got pci upstream switch port error when a device is plugged in, even with latest chipset drivers from AMD.
I wish I could tell you more about Titan Ridge driver 1.41.648.4, but there’s zero documentation on it I could find. Other than the fact that the DCH drivers are horrible? I found a way to uninstall and use some suggested old ones from Intel, and got systray looking normal. But card not actually working. Of course no settings have ever appeared in BIOS.

Going over Threadripper Resources... PCIEX8_2 - No Go? Have You tried PCIEX8_1? Agreed. Documentation is non existent.
The only thing You'll see in Bios will be Devices connected to Thunderbolt. And said Devices must be connected at Boot. No Plug and Play. Nothing, in Bios, about Thunderbolt its self. Not like on x299 with Thunderbolt settings in Bios.

Yes! Universal Audio Apollo Thunderbolt III interfaces - www.uaudio.com/audio-interfaces.html
However, if You want to add something like an ASUS Quad M.2 NVMe AIC, aim higher like a Threadripper II or III. You'll need more PCIe Resources that are not share but can be reallocated for Bifurcation.

Hi@@defaultHandle1110, Good question. There are two directions from which we could address that question. From Hardware, as You have asked, or the music. And audio is really all about the music. With that said, let's approach this from Your DAW of choice. So... what DAW are You planning on using? That perspective might be more enlightening. We need to match expectation with performance. Thoughts? Then the next question will be the audio interface You'll be using. Since You're watching this video, easy guess. However, keep an open mind to explore possible solutions. Just remember it's all about the music.

      Hi@@arielellunatiko2761,
Correct. No Thunderbolt Header which means no Bios support either. Like We said, On the Titan Ridge AIC, You'll have to Jump Pins 3 to 5 to keep the AIC alive. Only works on Titan Ridge. Not on any others like Alpine Ridge like You currently have. Not powerful enough.
BTW: The only X399 Motherboard, we're aware of with Thunderbolt 3 Header is Gigabyte. But alas, still no Bios support. There was a possibility of an X399 ASRock Motherboard with Thunderbolt 3 support. We have not confirmed that. So get a Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 AIC and Jump the Pins. That should work on any X399 Motherboard.

      Hi@@KlausDussely,
We need to figure out which files You need. Have not tried going backwards with a Thunderbolt AIC. Don't know if this will work. But, worth a try! Should work. Supposedly, updating is done to make it work better, not to break it! Going backwards or downgrading a Motherboard Bios is easy compared to this.
Seems even the Vendors are having issues with a Firmware Flash. TPS65983 - Creating Flash Image for Thunderbolt 3 ...
      e2e.ti.com/support/interface/f/138/p/744271/2751160
Intel does a great job of documenting the Firmware Flash process with their NUCs. Just a thought... Did You power down then repower the System before trying anything with Thunderbolt? And Your NVM version before was what? To verify, and Your current updated NVM is 43?

    • @KlausDussely

@@BuildOrBuy oh yes, when someone could create an older Flash, that would be great. I will read the link later. And yes I tried different things. Turning off and on. Different slots. Different cables. Different Devices connected. For example Using the AIC for a Thunderbolt-Network between two PC's works fine without rebooting. When I connect Devices like a RAID or an EGPU it shows up in Thunderbolt Software but not in the device-manager. With the old Firmware (I think it was NVM Version 23) I rebooted and then they worked fine. I think its because my mainboard(x399 Taichi) does not have any THB-C Header. So Hot-Plug does not work. Something I noticed is that the RAID shuts down(blue led gets red) when I reboot the computer. That was not the case with the older Firmware. Maybe it sends a shutdown command to prevent people from using this card in not supported systems or just for error prevention. But because of that my thunderbolt-hardware will never be usable. :/

card is hard to find...why is TB3 such a big issue on PC? (Coming from Mac, where everything is TB3 nowadays). There are barely any mainboards that have built-in TB3 and if they do it's usually only one port (I'm used to having 4!). Only the very high-end boards may have two TB3 ports built-in. Some more boards have TB3-headers, but the cards you need (like this one) are hard to find and then also only have two ports!
Same with USB-C..mainboards only have one or two on board and something ridicilous like 8x USB-A! Who needs that nowadays?!

Intel says one thing, everyone else says something different. And where is USB4? No where to be found - MIA!
We still need USB 2. Only as USB 2 Motherboard Headers for internal Devices - 4 would be perfect. And Internal USB 2 Hubs are lacking in quality.
USB 2 is required for CPU Coolers, this TB 3 card and any other internal USB Devices like Multi I/O Devices.

Excellent Question! It should work! The only way to know for certain is to try it! Since there is no Thunderbolt Header nor Bios Support, You'll need to Jump Pins 3 to 5 on the Titan Ridge card. On the Titan Ridge card, Thunderbolt Enumeration will only work in native mode and do not expect legacy mode meaning, no Thunderbolt 1 or 2. Only Thunderbolt 3. Legacy mode is suppose to mean No Security mode however, what You'll get is no Thunderbolt 1 or 2. Both Intel & Gigabyte claim each is to blame or are responsible. While they both point fingers, this is where we are left to figure Thunderbolt out for ourselves. And remember: USB4 is coming so Thunderbolt 3 will be a part of that new spec. _Keep Us Posted on Your Progress!_

      Hi rodgadala,
AMD Ryzen 2700X... X470 Chipset Motherboard or older? Doubtful. No guarantees! Short answer, wait for USB4 or wait for AMD X570 Chipset Motherboard. Longer answer however, if You want to try, here's what You'll need to know -
      Current Requirements...
      1.) PCIe 3.0 interface (PCIe x4) - 4 PCIe 3.0 Lanes
2.) Thunderbolt 3 - 5Pin GPIO Header on Motherboard - For SMBus Communication. In lieu of this, on Gigabyte Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 card, Jump Pins 3 to 5. Keeps card alive. This card has enough power to sustain being kept alive.
3.) USB 2.0 Motherboard Header - For Plug & Play enumeration.
4.) 2 x 6-pin PCIe power connectors - Only needed if Devices connected require power.
5.) Display port support from either APU (Video from CPU) or GPU if You want video through Thunderbolt.
Notice it's all about the Motherboard Chipset. That's Your platform foundation when Building or Buying a PC or Upgrading.
Here's the kicker - The Ryzen / X470 Chipset only supports 1 PCIe 3.0 Slot - For Video card. In essence, not enough Chipset / CPU / Motherboard Resources! BTW: We now expect USB4 to be PCIe 4.0. Time will tell. Another good reason to either now, go Threadripper or wait until later and see what we get to work with, then. Thunderbolt 3 should be easier to work with than it is turning out to be, right now. USB4 & PCIe 4.0 should change all of that. Until then, it's a work in progress. Threadripper III will become available 11-25-2019! Threadripper III / TRX40 Chipset uses PCIe 4.0!
      www.amd.com/en/products/ryzen-threadripper
AMD X570 Chipset Motherboard - Yes! Notice PCIe 4.0! Curious. PCIe 4.0 now! And PCIe 5.0 is soon to follow! Hard to keep up!
      www.amd.com/en/chipsets/x570
To reiterate - You need a different Motherboard Chipset. Food for thought - Hope this helps! Thanks for Watching! Stay tuned!

As I think it's a great idea to get TB3 working on TR4.. I think for now it's a path that's too expensive (for TR4) and too much hassle. I mean like, you can get a native thunderbolt x299 board and something like a 9800X for less. I get it, more lanes and more cores. But TR4 isn't that of a budget grade CPU either. I wonder why people go TR4 and want TB3 when there is actually a platform for the same price or less that supports it natively.

The M.2 Quad type of card is another. Besides, USB4 is coming and that will make Thunderbolt, by its self, obsolete since USB4 will incorporate Thunderbolt. As for the CPU - The Threadripper is Bang for the Buck, all things considered! But if Intel is Your thing, we understand and agree to disagree. @@post-leftluddite Really? X399 is expensive as hell. And a aic is expensive also (150 dollar for thunderbolt 3 Titan Ridge AIC card extra over a HEDT board that costs over 500 dollar. That's not "more performance for the price". Price really doesn't justify to go for AMD on the X399 platform. Would be if you had the same connections as X299 offers. Intel is opening up licencing on Thunderbolt but yet still the only motherboard that supports is natively is a 1000 dollar board. How is that justified when I could get a Gigabyte Designare 200 dollar Z390 board with TB3 Titan Ridge for the 9900K?

      Hi@@post-leftluddite,
_Amen to that... You are so right! Threadripper is Bang for the Buck in Resource Allocation! Thunderbolt 3 is just one possibility._

      Hi Beat,
Although Gigabyte does not provide Linux Drivers, it should work. _What's Your Motherboard chipset?_

      I have a Gigabyte AORUS GA-Z270X-Gaming K5

      Hi@@beat461,
Gigabyte AORUS GA-Z270X-Gaming K5 - PDF Manual - No guarantees! And No Bios Support. However... 1st try Motherboard PCIeX4 Slot and watch Your Resource allocation. If that Slot does not work, then try PCIeX8 Slot. On the Titan Ridge Controller card, Jump Pins 3 to 5. Keeps card alive for Device Enumeration. Make certain Your Chipset & Video Drivers are current before Controller card installation. Install the Bolt package. Keep Us Posted on Your Progress.

Too complex, not worth it, I will go with an UBS 3.1 drive.

      Hi Andrzej,
Agreed. Good idea. For now... Simplest Solution, Jump pins 3 to 5 on Thunderbolt 3 Header of AIC. Otherwise, wait until USB4. We Appreciate Your Comments! Thanks for Watching!
