Great video of the Caterpillar 70 scraper!
Question: what is the cable spool that is mounted on the left side (from the video perspective) of the bowl support arms cross member used for? I've seen (on other TH-cam videos) these cable spools mounted on other old, cable operated scrapers, but I don't know what they're used for. Is the cable spool part of a cable operated mechanism for raising the bowl or apron, or for moving the ejector plate?

That spool is there in case you break a cable and have to restring the unit. Essentially "spare parts" on board.

@@tomhoffman9729 Thanks! I thought the spool had some function with the cable mechanism that actuates the scraper's bowl, ejector & apron.

I didnt know a 70 and a d6d was good but considering a d7 17a of the same vintage as that 70 was only 125 hp,l guess its good..

You right! They designed for d7! Here in the UK d6 are more common, and much cheaper to run! And they actually work very well with the 70 box!

      @@allaboutmachine I am about to buy a d6d and a 60..ma7be a 70 would be better...allis chalmers c106 is close for $3000.like a cat 60..dad used to say a pan and d7 were good to 700 feet.after that only tires.what do you think?

Honestly, I haven't got too much experience, but your dad advice about after 700 feet tires, is sound good!! D6d are brilliant tractors... perfect mid range machine for multi purpose! 70 box works fine e even in clay ...its all depends on a job.... I guess, how far you gotta haul the dirt... we actually had a job where we hired a motoscraper, couse long haulage!

They were designed for a 3T D7. It's not just horsepower that determines what can pull a scraper but weight and balance. A D6D does handle a 70 scraper. I do know of a couple of guys who have pulled them with D6Ds. The 435 scraper was built for the 17A D7s. They are quite a bit larger but better designed. They load at least as easy as a 70 or even easier. But they are also a lot heavier. A D6D would load a 435 but struggle to pull the loaded scraper. The D7Es are better than a D7F or G. That's because with the heavy engine up front they are better balanced. We had a 641 pull scraper and tried to pull it with a D9H, but it was too heavy to pull around with the D9H. We've had numerous Cat and scraper rigs over the years. But always bigger scrapers with bigger Cats. We currently use D8Ks or D8Hs with 463 cable scrapers. The 463s are double the size of the 70 scraper but the D8K is also double the size of the D6D. Also, we opted for direct drive Cats up front. Powershifts do work and we have used them a lot too. But direct drives load the scrapers better because they don't torque down like a powershift, and they haul the loaded scraper better than a powershift because they don't torque down. We had a very snappy high horse 36A and it would routinely outhaul the D9Gs pulling 463 scrapers in softer ground on longer hauls. This is because the 9s would torque down in second gear a bit and the D8 in 4th gear (which is the same as second in a powershift) wouldn't slow down. And another major thing compared to a powershift D8, they always use 100-150 litres less fuel in a 10 hour shift.
