This is one of the best discussions regarding Universal horror that I have listened to date.
Agreed.
Absolutely!
I’m 55. From Louisville Ky. When we were kids in the 70s there was a channel called WDRB that had a show every Saturday night called Fright Night. They would show two of these old Universal horror movies each Saturday. Was so much fun. And literally scared the daylights out of us. Great memories. Great movies. A simpler time
We had Chiller Theater on WPIX 11 in NY creepy intro with a hand
58. I saw these on Ted Turner's UHF super-station. We were in Mass, Ted's station was in Georgia. That's also how I saw the Universal Abbott and Costello's and The Outer Limits.
I lived in Louisville in the mid-70s (I'm 56). I remember those movies. Great times.
SMASHPOUNDX Still like A&C meet Frankenstein. As all the monsters
@@samanthab1923 Yes, still good. Also Meet the Killer.
Dan is a great guest.
The Invisible Man was awesome. The cackle when he was taking the bandages off and scaring that person. Good stuff.
Claude Raines was great. You really felt how insane he had become. Fun fact: Claude Raines owned a farm not far from me.
Yep, The Invisible Man holds up really well.
Watched it a few weeks ago for the first time since i was a kid. Fucking AWESOME. Can vividly remember it on late one friday probably late 80s.
Honestly, I could listen to you fellas all day long. Wonderful stuff! Thanks very much.
Pete! I am going to steal a line in this episode... This is the fastest two hours of my life! How can you possibly top this episode Pete!! I am speechless 😄
Wow! Now THAT is a great discussion of Universal horror films. Dan's seemingly encyclopedic knowledge is amazing and looking forward to the next SoT Monster's Den that brings him back. The time went by so quickly and so much information was discussed that this show needs to be watched again in the near future. Great show, Dan and Pete! 10 are listed below but it could change at any time though the top three would likely hold some spot in the top three as I never tire of those. The top spot is likely because watched an updated version of it Saturday night and the film was so crisp and clear.
1. Creature From The Black Lagoon
2. Bride Of Frankenstein
3. Invisible Man
4. Dracula
5. Frankenstein
6. Wolfman
7. The Raven
8. The Black Cat
9. The Mummy
10. Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman
What a great collection of movies. Top 10 the order has changed over the years but this is how I would currently rank them:
1) Abbot & Costello meet Frankenstein
2) Frankenstein
3) Dracula
4) Wolfman
5) Bride Of Frankenstein
6) Creature Of The Black Lagoon
7) The Mummy
8) Phantom Of The Opera
9) Invisible Man
10) White Zombie
Love this Monsters Den Ranking The Films Of idea. I thought the Arlo/Pardo combo was great, but the Dan Brown/Pardo set up is out of this world !
My top 5 Universal Horror Films are;
1. "The Bride Of Frankenstein"
2. "Creature From The Black Lagoon"
3. "Abbott And Costello Meet Frankenstein"
4. "Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man"
5. "The Ghost Of Frankenstein.
Look forward to future rankings on maybe Hammer Films, Roger Corman Films, zombie films, Lovecraftian Films and much more.
Great show.
Awesome information on universal pictures.
1 Frankenstein
2 Bride of Frankenstein
3 The Raven
4 The Wolfman
5 The Invisible man
I havnt seen the Black cat yet sounds good. Am a big Rod Sterling fan, the creater of the original Twilight Zone. Love to see a run down of favs in that amazing series. A master of the short imaginative story.
Dan is such a nice addition to the Monster's Den, he should be working in the radio with his awesome voice and doing commentary tracks on blurays with his knowledge of films.
Though I'm a BIG fan of 70's & 80's slashers....there's just something enduring about some of those Universal monster films! My favorites: #1. The Wolf Man #2. The Creature From The Black Lagoon #3. Bride Of Frankenstein.
It always amazed me that Elsa Lancaster (the Bride) went on to play loopy old parts. Bell Book & Candle & The Bishops Wife. Married to Charles Laughton the Hunchback
What Mike Antonelli is to Jazz...Dan is to Universal horror.
Creature from the Black Lagoon is one of my favourites, due to the historical significance of the costume and underwater camerawork technology, not to mention the badass design of the Creature, but dear lord did they overdo the score.
I had a few of the original Aurora models. Frankenstein, The Wolfman and The Phantom of the Opera.
I remember my Dad making Dracula with my brothers. I watched Phantom with him, Claude Raines. I slept with my door open & the hall light on for years.
Love listening and learning about things beyond me. This guy is great.....thanks gentlemen
Great show, Pete. I just ordered the Universal box set after seeing yours. I'm so grateful to find Sea Of Tranquility. A place for great music and films. Cheers!
My top 10 Universal horror films are:
1. The Mummy's Hand
2. Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman
3. Bride of Frankenstein
4. The Wolfman
5. The Raven
6. Frankenstein
7. The Invisible Man
8. Son of Frankenstein
9. House of Dracula
10. The Black Cat (1934)
Note: Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman ranks so high for sentimental reasons. As a kid it was the first Universal horror movie I ever saw. I had to fight my parents tooth & nail to stay up after the 11:00 news to watch Shock Theater which was featuring the film.
Also I wasn't sure if Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein should or could be included. If I were it would be #1 and the rest would go down a notch. It's my second favorite movie of all-time.
Honorable mentions go to:
1. The Mad Ghoul
2. Werewolf of London
3. Creature From the Black Lagoon
Thanks for this - I have loved the Universal monsters my whole life. Great movies.
Pete I agree, the original Frankenstein is my favorite although Bride is probably the superior film.
Dan is extremely knowledgeable, lots of great info.
Great episode
Been collecting Universal Monsters and Horror Icons for over forty plus years. I remember watching many films on Chiller Theater.
My favorite top 10 list
1. Creature from the Black Lagoon(1954)
2. The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
3. Frankenstein (1931)
4. The Mummy(1932)
5. Phantom of the Opera(1925)
6. Dracula(1931)
7. Son of Frankenstein (1939)
8. Dracula's Daughter (1936)
9. This Island Earth(1955)
10. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)
Thanks this series again. I really enjoy for this.
I’m a big 50’s SciFi myself! Original War of the Worlds! It came from outer space! The Blob! Those type.
Is that the same film as "It, The Terror From Beyond Space"? That film freaked us out as kids. BTW, not a Universal film, but check out Quatermass and The Pit, AKA 5 Million Years To Earth.
Yes "It, The Terror..." Came out in 58/59 fits in the 50s Sci Fi.
I love these for the fact no computer generated crap! Hokey to today’s standards but don’t care. Creature from the Black Lagoon was pretty damn good when they made the creature.
Hey guys!! My Faves are
DRACULA
FRANKENSTEIN
THE WOLFMAN
ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN
CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON
THE MUMMY
THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN
THE INVISIBLE MAN
Hi Pete,
So thankful you and Dan put up this episode of top 10 Universal Horrors.
What a wealth of knowledge between you both. Enjoyed growing up watching these on TV back in the early 70's. Coming home after school on Channel 7 or on Saturday mornings on Channel 11. Loved Chiller Theater with the band coming out of and back in the quicksand !!!
Was wondering since you have such a background in music as well, if you have seen Dracula with the Philip Glass music score. It was available on one of the Dracula DVD reisuues. I feel it adds a lot to the atmosphere of the mostly musicless film you mentioned. Wonder what you think if you have. Looking forward to future episodes! Btw love the Hudson valley Squares also. If you ever expand the square let me know ! :)
Best,
Robert Presti
Big big Universal fan here, here's my list before watching....
10. This Island Earth
9. The Mummy (31)
8. Dracula (31)
7. The Black Cat
6. Creature from the Black Lagoon
5. The Mummy's Hand
4. Frankenstein (31)
3. The Invisible Man
2. The Old Dark House (32)
1. Bride of Frankenstein
Excellent episode! Universal has always been my passion. Wolfman, Creature from the Black lagoon, Frankenstein are my faves. Thanks guys, very interesting and informative!
Nice shout out to Lionel Atwill as everyone's favourite mad doctor. I especially appreciate his performance in the absolutely marvellous (and my favourite non-Universal b+w horror movie) "Dr X"; his theories are bonkers in that one.
The impact these early horror films made on generations of fans is a testimony to their quality.
Original Frankenstein the best horror film EVER made! CLASSIC!
What a great show! Spot on guys!
This is great. You've really rekindled my love of these films.
Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein did it for me when I was 5!
Dan ("not to change the subject") Brown is awesome!
I'm glad you call it Universal "Horror" not monsters because that may preclude stuff like the Black Cat, Raven, etc. "Golden Age Horror" would be another way to list it, which could bring in Island of Lost Souls, Dr. Jeckyl, King Kong and the like. But per your list, mine would be:
10. The Invisible Man Returns
9. The Mummy
8. Son of Frankenstein
7. Dracula's Daughter
6. The Black Cat
5. Bride of Frankenstein
4. Dracula
3. Abbot & Costello Meet Frankenstein
2. The Invisible Man
1. Frankenstein
This is gold. Great discussion. Your channel is becoming one of my favorites to tune in to. Speaking of Karloff, have u seen The Comedy of Terrors with Price, Lorre, and Rathbone? Keep up the great work. 👍
Great episode Pete. Thanks for doing this one.
Great video Pete. Very informative...
I just watched this episode. Great job, guys. It was nice to see "Night Monster" get a mention. It's easily one of my favorites among the more obscure films. "The Old Dark House" is another one. The classics are the classics for a reason. By the way, Bela had a small role in "Night Monster" as the house butler.
Nothing beats bride of Frankenstein nothing not even close
Shocked neither of you picked The Black Cat, my personal fave Universal flick !! So warped, trippy and darrrrrk !!! Dan was awesome in this episode Pete !!!!
This was one was very interesting for me, and Dan Browns knowledge is a pleasure to listen to.
From Son of Frankenstein, 'They die. Dead. I die. Live. Classic
01 - The Phantom of the Opera (1925).
02 - The Invisible Man (1933).
03 - The Wolf Man (1941).
04 - The Black Cat (1934).
05 - Son of Dracula (1943).
06 - The Mummy (1932).
07 - Dracula (1931).
08 - The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923).
09 - House of Dracula (1945).
10 - Frankenstein (1931).
I really enjoyed this, as I have been a MAJOR fan of Universal Horrors throughout my life. My love of old horror movies for me is like how passionate I am for The Beatles when it comes to music. I found myself wanting to add facts and opinions through the screen while you guys were talking, LOL!🤣
Please let me know if you'd ever like to have me on to join you discussing Universal, or old horror in general from 1930 - 1980's (big Friday the 13th fan too). Cheers!
Love these!
Great episode, love me some old black and white films, don't know how you guys feel about silent horror but would be interesting to hear what your favourites are. Nosferatu is probably one of my favourite horror film of all time.
The most innovative Universal Monster: The Monolith Monsters (1957). OK, as a geologist, maybe I'm biased but this is a great movie.
Any plans to do an Ed Wood show? Also a local connection as he was from Poughkeepsie and a Lugosi connection.
Hey Pete and Dan. Great stuff as usual.Would you guys consider ranking those Val Lewton flicks?
I would love that.
Please bring dan back for more
Kongo with Walter Huston is my favorite borderline horror pre code film ,if you haven’t seen it check it out it’ll surprise you
Chaney actually played both the Wolfman & the Monster in A & C Meet Frankenstein. At one point Glenn Strange broke his ankle. As a result Chaney put on the makeup to complete a scene.
Dwight Frye had actually been a highly successful Broadway actor. When he came to Hollywood he expected to get leading roles in films but instead, as a result of his Universal films, he became typecast basically bursting his plans.
Fantastic!!! 😂
My all time favorite Universal Horror film is a tie between "The Raven" and "The Black Cat", both with Karloff and Lugosi.
Fun, does Dan Brown have a TH-cam channel or website?
A very fun watch! Thank you. With a huge treasure trove of background information on the films. I really enjoy these older monster films. Have you ever watch the Turkish Dracula film from the 50s? It's wonderful and better than any other version I have seen. Maybe a deep dive into non-godzilla Toho's films in the future? I do some writing for a website called Vinyl Writers, which features articles that focus on the cultural and artistic aspects society from around the world. Music reviews seek to uncover obscure, electronic, punk music that have a unique voice. You'll also find great film reviews and interviews. Just sharing. Thought you may find some of the articles and reviews interesting.
I think both Dracula and The Mummy suffered terribly once the focus shifted onto the women and the fixation both dracula and the mommy had with them.
Filming the Spanish Dracula at night seems appropriate.
except for the lead, the Spanish version is better.
Hi Pete. Really enjoyed the discussion. Like you these are my favorites. I love Frankenstein Meets Wolf Man but 2 things about the movie always bugged me. First : when Chaney grabs the man in the crypt since it's full moon and he's in his murder mode why isn't his hand hairy. Plus it would have made it more scary. In my humble opinion. 2nd : Major continuity error. When the hospital staff finds him in his bed after going out and murdering the policeman he's back in his hospital gown. Instead of his pants and shirt. LOL.
Claude Rains! Loved him in Mr Smith Goes to Washington
Abbott and Costello meet the Wolfman.
1 The Invisible man...2 Son of Frankenstien.....3The Creature from the black lagoon...4 The Wolf man 5 The Mummy 6 Frankenstien meets the Wolf man 7 Bride of Frankenstien.....8 Phanthom of the opera C version....9 Frankenstien...10 Dracula.
I think Mr. Brown should have his own TH-cam channel.
Just saw Dracula just recently on Turner Classic Movies. My favorite Universal Monster movie is The Mummy.
Superb show can we get a hammer top ten too brilliant show 🏴👍🏼

@@seaoftranquilityprog brilliant bud that was an amazing show really informative for a horror classic nut like me much appreciated hey when we going to get a the cult ranking the albums lol sorry bit cheeky but in for a penny in for a pound have a great day 👍🏼👍🏼 John 🏴
A little tidbit. Richard Denning who was in Creature From the Black Lagoon, Black Scorpion, etc. was married to Universal scream queen, Evelyn Ankers, until her death in 1985.
1:House Of Frankenstein-Glenn Strange is the best Monster,he's taller, bigger and I hate Karloff's sympathetic version of The Monster
2:Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman
3:Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein
4:The Creature From The Black Lagoon
5:Dracula
6:The Invisible Man
7:The Mummy's Tomb
8:Son Of Frankenstein
9:Phantom Of The Opera(1925)
10:The Mummy's Ghost
Honorable Mentions: The Karloff&Luogsi team up's,The Inner Sanctum Mysteries with Lon Chaney Jr,The Deadly Mantis,4-D Man and many others
1. Frankenstein
2. The Wolf Man
3. Son of Frankenstein
4. Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man
5. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
Old dark house is my favourite.Saul and Morgan are crazy scary.
The Wolfman and the Mummy just dont get the credit, Frankenstein and Dracula get . Boris Karloff; in my opinion; was so much better as the original mummy , creepy monster and LON CHANEY was so badass
Love's these movie's 💃
Frankenstein
Bride of Frankenstein
Dracula’s Daughter
The Raven
Werewolf of London
Dracula
Son of Frankenstein
Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man
The Wolf Man
Creature From the Black Lagoon
Honorable mentions
The Invisible Ray
The Invisible Man
The Mummy's Hand
The Mummy's Tomb
The Mummy's Ghost
The Mummy's Curse
Killer guest!!
I love the universal classic monsters. My favorite horror series. Like Pete, they're a part of my DNA. However, and this is just a minor quibble, it is so irritating when all the actors are dressed in suits, ties, dress shoes, dresses... No matter where they're at. In a dingy castle, clogging thru the mud, in the rain.. Doesn't matter.. They're wearing a suit. It just, to me, stands out as like an unrealistic part.
Ever put a prog album on while watching a flic the way they say Wonderful wizard of Oz matches with Floyd?
Top 10 Godzilla movies!
The Old Dark house
Bride of Frankenstein
Frankenstein
The Wolfman
The Black Cat
...Bela IS Dracula!...Lawrence Welk IS his brother!...Peace...
Biggest flaw with Frankenstein meets the Wolfman is the title. TYhe wolfman doesn't meet frankenstein at all. Frankenstein wasn't even in the movie. Its correct title should have been Frankenstein's monster meets the Wolfman
Who made night of the lepus ? 🤣
That’s why 4K sucks
