    Good stuff! Some lesser known ones that really worked for me : Lake Mungo, Last Shift, The Void, A Tale of two Sisters, The House Of The Devil, Summer Of '84, Kill List, As Above So Below, The Ritual, Apostle...just to name a few. Lots of great overlooked horror out there!

    Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) and Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) are both fucking amazing - and I'm looking forward to their respective new films, Nope and Disappointment Blvd. Another director I need to highlight Julia Ducournau (spelling?) - a French woman who's absolutely fucked in the head, but such a brilliant filmmaker. Her first film Raw, and especially her newest film Titane, are absolutely amazing!

    I'm over 50 and have seen a lot of horror movies but nothing has left a bigger impression on me in the last 20 years than MARTYRS (the original French version ... there is a very bad US Remake) ... just insane brutal horror and psychological torment. The director wrote and made it through a terrible bout of clinical depression and the sense of dread is just super heavy. Relentless, intense movie with an ending that will stay with you for a long time. I haven't been able to watch it again ...

    • @sadekx5251
      @sadekx5251 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, Also High Tension could have been higher on my list if it wasn't for the ending, which kinda was a bit of a letdown. Speaking of Foreign flick, I would put "I saw the devil" (stupid English title) in my top 3.

    • @ChiefWiggum08151
      @ChiefWiggum08151 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't understand all the praise for Martyrs...have watched it also only one time...because of being so bad. Maybe I should give it another try. But out of the big four of the new wave of french Horror movies (INSIDE, High Tension, Frontiers) it is by far the weakest for me. Especially High Tension and Inside have kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.

    • @lurcharoni
      @lurcharoni 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChiefWiggum08151 I think for me was the total wtf of the second half where it takes a turn in a total other direction that made it so very different. Inside and High Tension while for sure insane as well, tread a more traditional story line overall. Never saw Frontiers, but I need to check it out.

    "Let The Right One In" - probably the best horror movie since 2000, possibly the best movie since 2000.

    • @drterylene
      @drterylene ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like very few vampire movies, but I loved that movie. I completely disagree with Pete about "Let Me In." It's a bland, boring remake that removed all the things that made "Let the Right One In" so great. I was actually surprised he liked it so much because aside from the general idea, it's a completely different movie and nowhere near as interesting. It's a classic case of dumbing/watering down a movie for American audiences. I could see the studio saying, "Oh, no...we can't do that. Oh, we can't show that either." If anyone hasn't seen "Let Me In", don't waste your time. Watch the original instead.

    "The Witch" *terrified* me, and haunted me for some time, in ways that I wasn't sure newer horror movies could anymore. It's my top horror movie of the last twenty years. The original, French-language, "Martyrs," from 2008, is a very different film but also great. In terms of being a visceral, brutal, disturbing, *and* relatively "newer" film, "Martyrs" is only matched, for me, by another French film, 2002's "Irreversible."

    Well l certainly have a long list now but tbh I struggle to watch horror now I’m older , just find it very unsettling . Hereditary had a real effect on me , couldn’t go back to it for a while, very creepy and very well done

    Great Picks! Here are some that were not mentioned that are worth checking out:
    >The Ritual :- Solid writing- Creepy European woodland atmosphere - Pagan cult - Unique scary monster - 'nuff said!
    >The Exorcism of Emily Rose: - IMO the 2nd best Exorcism ever made. Almost more of a trial drama than a horror movie, but so good AND chilling!
    Excellent writing and cast.AND the lead actress was double jointed. That whole contortion thing started with this film.
    >Autopsy of Jane Doe - Great cast. Unique concept - pretty damn scary!
    Asian filmmakers have been rockin' it the past 20 years (Could be a topic on its own)
    >I saw the Devil: - Korean serial killer/crime/horror movie that gets reeeeeeally brutal!
    >Train to Busan - Already a classic stand out among zombie films.
    >The Host: Already an Iconic monster movie!

    Fantastic choices. I would’ve picked any of those.
    My Top Ten are:-
    The Orphanage (2007) - Creepy, gothic, very unsettling.
    Splinter (2008) - Surprisingly good, & gripping.
    Crawl (2019) - I enjoyed this fun B movie that balances well between schlocky & serious. So tense in places.
    The Haunting in Connecticut (2009) - I’m not a huge believer of alleged true ghost story movies but I really enjoyed this one as was very creepy in places.
    Donkey Punch (2008) - sex act gone wrong which turns in to a violent fight for survival. Quite brutal for a British film.
    My Bloody Valentine (2009) - Surprisingly a great remake. Shocked there wasn’t a sequel.
    [REC] (2007) & [REC] 2 The best zombie found footage to date. It’s scary, creepy, bloody, & extremely tense.
    Drag Me to Hell (2009) - I absolutely love this film. A proper Rami ghost train ride movie much like the original Evil Dead.
    The Last House on the Left (2009) -
    Another great remake that I feel is better than the original.
    The thing that ruined the original for me were the goofy cops, & odd choices of music for example where the girls are being kidnapped there’s this bizarre upbeat music as they’re going to the car from the hotel.
    The remake keeps the grim tone throughout.
    The Devil’s Backbone (2001) Del Toro’s amazing gothic horror film set during the Spanish civil war.
    Honourable mentions -
    Wake Wood (2011)
    Teeth (2007)
    Black Sheep (2006)
    Trick R Treat (2007)
    The Children (2008)

    My favourite horror movie since 2000 and im surprised no one mentioned it but it would have to be Insidious. I do have an emotional connection as it was the first horror movie I saw in the theatres as a 13 year old and it terrified me for weeks. The reason I think this movie needs its credit is because it really sparked the blumhouse style of horror movies of the 2010's which really influenced the conjuring, sinister, oculus, dark skies.

    Here are some of my favorite modern horror movies. I like the horror movies I have seen but I'm not huge into the genre so I don't think I have seen ten horror movies that I truly enjoyed in the past 20 years. There's a lot I have heard of that I need to see. Anyway here is my list.
    1. Cabin In The Woods
    2. Shawn of The Dead
    3. The VVitch
    4. Zombieland
    5. The Invisible Man
    6. 10 Cloverfield Lane
    7. Let Me In (haven't seen Let The Right One In)
    8. Prometheus
    9. Tucker and Dale vs. Evil
    Now I would call them more monster movies than horror but I also really like King Kong (2005) and Godzilla (2014).

      Once you see "Let the Right One In" you won't just throw "Let Me In" off the list, you'll get a restraining order against it. They completely cut out everything that made "Let the Right One In" so great. "Let Me In" is completely watered down compared to the original. Not even close. Pete was way off on this one and I was really surprised at his assessment.
