Ducati Panigale V4R Dyno run

  • Behold! The new 999cc Panigale V4R breaks records, posting 199hp (202hp rerun couple weeks later) at the rear wheel (234hp at the crank), on the MCC dyno with Akrapovic racing exhaust. Truly epic, a new age is upon us.
    Remember folks, crank horsepower is what is reported by manufacturers. Numbers on dynos will vary, but will generally be 15% lower than crank numbers due to friction and energy loses through the transmission, sprockets, chain, the tire, etc...
    Note: The dyno bike is NOT the same VIN number as the intro bike. The intro bike was on tour for the official unveiling. The bike you see on the dyno is the first customer purchase, but is a V4R - the dry clutch is covered, obviously, from the factory. The bike would never be sold without a standard clutch cover. It was removed from the intro bike simply to show off the fact that it does have a dry clutch, to show the audience. The fact I have to explain this proves how sad the internet has become - that there is so much fakery online and on TH-cam that people have become so suspicious of everything these days. But rest assured, the dyno bike is an aluminum tank clad V4R, with Akrapovic exhaust installed and customer requested Superleggera wheels.
    The highest posted torque on this dyno still belongs to the Panigale 1299 Final Edition with Akrapovic exhaust, around 94 lb-ft. But that V-twin also has 300 additional cc's of displacement.
    Special thanks to the Duc_doc for providing the videos, follow him on the Gram @duc_doc. And thank you to Alex and the rest of the team at the Motor Cycle Center for being the best Ducati dealer in the midwest! Visit them at www.teammcc.com

    *Video recorded with a cell phone - in real life it sounds like a MotoGP bike.
    10/30/19 update: Cycle World posts 204 rwhp for the Panigale V4R on the same dyno the 2020 BMW S1000RR posted 182hp for comparison. This means their dyno is correctly showing about a 12% loss from crankshaft to the dyno’s roller.
    NOTE: You cannot compare dyno figures between different dynos! You can only compare numbers between bikes on the SAME dyno, because different dynos do not always agree and there’s many factors in that (calibration, age, quality, model, environmental factors, etc). One dyno will show 182hp at the rear, and another will show 206hp from the same bike. Some dynos show 20hp more than they should, some 5hp too little, it’s all over the place. Only compare numbers using the same dyno. Remember, claimed HP from the manufacturer is always at the crank, and there’s always around 10% power loss between the crank and dyno’s roller so dyno figures will always be around 10-15% LESS than claimed engine power. It’s physics folks.
    8/28: Update:
    For comparison, Cycle World just dyno tested the all new S1000RR on a Dynojet dyno (like the MCC one) and it posted 182hp at the rear wheel, which perfectly lined up with the claimed crank hp numbers.
    www.cycleworld.com/how-much-power-does-2020-bmw-s-1000-rr-make/
    4/25/19 UPDATE:
    After being run on track the V4R shown on this dyno was run again on the dyno today (also warmer and slightly more humid today). Updated results are 202.97hp at the rear tire. A different dyno will likely post a higher number. This Team MCC dynoject dyno is known as a “heartbreak dyno”. It reads conservatively, consistently around 15% power train loss crank to tire. Most other dynos on TH-cam are reading closer to 10% loss. Some bullshit dynos are posting rear tire numbers as if powertrain/tire loss is only 5% or less, which is impossible. The lesson is that there’s no one correct number because it all depends on testing conditions and dyno calibration and character.
    .............................................................
    All vehicles have losses between the crankshaft horsepower (that which is reported by the manufacturer) and the tire(s). This is due to frictional energy loses inside the transmission, at the sprockets and chain, or driveshaft, and at the tire. This is physics and true for all cars and motorbikes. Generally, it’s around 15% loss for motorcycles (Google it yourself!). So if your motorcycle has a manufacturer claimed 195hp, that means it actually puts 168-170 hp to the ground. That’s what a dyno measures.
    The Ducati Panigale V4R, with Akra race exhaust, is rated at 234hp, the most ever for a street-legal production bike. And with a 15% loss to the rear tire, the dyno shows 199 to 200hp. A car rated to 400hp will put down 340hp to the tires give or take.

      Really?? Suzuki didn't claim their bike makes a 195 rwhp, it was PROVEN that it made 195 rwhp at a dyno by an independent shop! So you're wrong, Suzuki never made any such claim because they didn't have to. They know their engine is a beast, and they didn't have to conjure that HP by throwing in a high profile cam like Ducati did. Don't get me wrong, the V4R is beautiful, and it does have a powerful engine, but $40K for 4-5 more rwhp is insane.

    • @ilmostro16
      @ilmostro16  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You cannot compare dyno numbers between different dynos. Only on the same dyno. Different dynos will show different rear wheel HP. Your bike will probably post 180hp on this dyno. People do not calibrate dyno’s correctly very often. So bikes can only be compared on the same dyno. Really the purpose is to get an idea of power and also to compare before and after modifications are done. For example, Cycle World recently dynoed the new S1000RR and it posted 182hp which is correct for a 12% power train loss. But some other TH-cam video used a different dyno and posted 206hp which is nonsense because the engine is only rated to 205hp. There will be a 10% to 15% power loss between the engine and the rear tire due to mechanical losses. This is true for all internal combustion motorcycles with transmissions and chain drives.

      Running it on a dyno to measure the power at the rear tire, which is always less than the advertised power from the manufacturer since they always report engine crankshaft figures. There’s mechanical losses between 10% to 15% between crankshaft and tire. The video description explains it. Thanks for watching!

      @ilmostro16  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The dry clutch is always covered from the factory. It’s only uncovered on the unveiling bike because it was removed for show. The dyno bike is not the same unit as the one unveiled, but it is a V4R. See the aluminum gas tank...., the bike comes from the factory with a normal clutch cover screwed to the engine case like any other bike.

    This is 4 cylinder right? why the hell it sounds like v10?

    • @ilmostro16
      @ilmostro16  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      All I can tell you is that it uses a “twin fire” combustion sequence which is why it has the sound it does. You can find the diagram online for how the sequence firing pattern works.

      It’s a Big Bang v4 and fires 2 cylinders together so you get a vtwin sound.
      Inline 4 Japanese engines make a screaming noise due to firing cylinders one after the other.

    Does Dyno testing ruin the engine as they redline the engine to check the true BHP levels

    • @ilmostro16
      @ilmostro16  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, redlining an engine like this doesn’t ruin it. It’s made to be redlined during racing. That being said, engines sometimes blow up. It’s rare and hard to predict the cause. But any high strung engine can blow up at redline.

    What’s up with the bat wings?

      To provide aerodynamic downforce to resist wheelies. Look at MotoGP for instance, all the bikes have wings of some sort.

    How much top speed

    • @ilmostro16
      @ilmostro16  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is not measured on a dyno test. But it’s probably electronically limited for the street. On the track it’s already proven to be the fastest bike, by far, in WSBK.

    Why do theses bike vibrate so much

    • @ilmostro16
      @ilmostro16  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I demo rode the Panigale V4, it is quite smooth. Older Ducati’s and V-twin models have some vibration because that’s the nature of the engine (fewer cylinders = less smooth). Makes it feel like you’re riding something truly alive rather than a buzzy in-line 4 with no soul that mostly feels like an electric motor.
