How did Washington State get screwed? They shouldn't have been in that position anyway considering they got 50 yards because the receiver shoved Woodson out of the way!
***** Yep, the real screwing would have been WSU winning this after that play. the ref was right there, reached for the flag and then for some reason decides he wants a more exciting finish. he got it.
Nowadays there would have been a 5-minute review on the catch to determine if he was in bounds and then another one to determine that there was still 2 seconds remaining. Either way you will never see a game end like this again. A funny thing I remember about this particular Rose Bowl is that it was one of the fastest I can remember - the game ended right around 5:00PM Pacific time and I can't remember one since then that has ended that early.
@@Knightmessenger The only similarity between the Washington State and Wisconsin situations was that the it was clear cut: Leaf had unquestionably spiked the ball with 2 seconds left whereas the ball was hiked to the Wisconsin QB after time had already expired. Had instant replay existed back then, WSU would have gotten one last chance, although the chances that they'd actually score were low.
@posysdogovych2065 it only appeared that WSU had time left on the scoreboard because the clock operator goofed. He started the clock on the snap, not the referee's ready for play signal. Both this game and Wisconsin, the previous play had gone for a first down but been stopped in bounds. So in both cases, the center had to wait for the clock to restart before he could snap the ball. 2 seconds is not enough time to spike the ball when the clock is running like that.
As a USC Trojan, I never feared for Michigan in this game. They had poise and overcome some very tough situations and deficits that whole season and were the better team. PERIOD! UM that season I also felt could have scored more points, but did not have to, as their Defense won most of their games that year. I thought and felt the ASU/tOSU game the year before, was the very wild and crazy game where it went back and forth and no one team you ever felt would Win or Lose, that was so tight.
For all those saying Wash St. should have had a second left to run another play, the EXACT SAME PLAY happened at the end of the 2012 Rose Bowl and Wisconsin tried to spike the ball with two seconds following a first down. It didn't work and instant replay confirmed it. Watching the end of the 2012 edition, I was yelling something to my friends like "Did they not know what happened in 1998?" In this game, the scoreboard clock operator mistakenly started the clock on the snap, not when the ref signaled ready for play (after the chains had been set following a first down) which added to the confusion. And if the sideline official calls offensive pass interference on Nian Taylor, Wash St is still inside their 10. That was Taylor's only "catch" of the game and without it, Ryan Leaf doesn't throw for over 300 yards.
Knightmessenger They should have had TWO seconds. Your Michigan bias is showing and this game PROVED that THE Nebraska Cornhuskers were the undisputed National Champions. Huskers played like champions, the Wolverines played like chumps and had to buy off the refs.
Joseph Dungee Well maybe your Nebraska bias is showing. Time ran out, the officials keep time on the field and that one counts, not the scoreboard clock that was in error. The very similar ending of the 2012 game proved it beyond any doubt. It was easy for Nebraska to play like champions seeing as their opponent didn't bother to show up. We all know what happened in the NFL but Ryan Leaf was the better quarterback in his January 1998 bowl game than Peyton Manning. Leaf made that team top 10, without him the next year WSU didn't even qualify for a bowl game. Without Peyton Manning, Tennessee went undefeated and won the national championship. In fact I'm still wondering why Nebraska didn't face Florida State in the Orange and have Tennessee play Ohio State in the Sugar. Those would have been better matchups, wasn't FSU ranked higher than TN anyways?
Knightmessenger WHAT???? Tennessee was dominated by the Huskers. Michigan, was the team that didn't show up and nearly beaten. Considering the difference between that 1997 Volunteer and 1998 team was at QB I see little difference between them.
Joseph Dungee Yeah, Tenessee was dominated by Nebraska. Because the Vols weren't that good that year. Florida State, Washington State or Ohio State would have given Nebraska a tougher game. As for Michigan in the Rose Bowl, WSU's strategy was to basically put all the defense at stopping the run. Brian Griese was seen as someone who could manage a game, not lead a game winning drive so they basically dared Michigan to beat them by throwing the ball, something Michigan proved capable of doing but was not accustomed to that season. So Michigan may not have played their best game but they certainly showed up.
Wasn't Bob Griese the color guy on this broadcast? If so, that is very weird every time he has to discuss a play by Michigan's offense and call their QB (his son) Brian Griese, like he doesn't know him.
Bob and Keith had Michigan for at least PSU, Wisconsin, OSU, and this game. I thought Bob did a pretty good job though he never really called him "Griese" it was always "Brian"
ABC avoided having Bob do games when Brian became the starting QB in 1995. Since Driesbach started all the games in 1996, he did a number of Michigan games that year. Then against Ohio State, Driesbach got hurt and Brian Griese came in and Bob Griese was broadcasting that game and did fine. So ABC decided it was no issue the next season.
The only Michigan game I watched that season is when Michigan played Notre Dame and Bob definitely called Brian by "Griese" every time he had to mention him (the 97' ND/UM game is easy to find on youtube if you wish to confirm that). I understand that this was early in the 1997 season and ABC and Bob Griese probably agreed that it was better if Bob just referred to his son by his first name anytime he was the commentator on one of Brian's games.
They should have forced Nebraska vs Michigan. Such a sham the number 1 team playing number 7 or 8 when we new exactly who the two best teams were. Feels like they robbed both teams and one team from true glory. College football really pissed me off with this stuff as a kid back then.
@@johnwaffleh2p70 I think so to! But wish they played so Michigan fans didn't act like they won it because we had Woodson. Most overrated football team in college ever.
Michigan had 4 games decided by a TD or less. Nebraska had 2. Michigan beat 7 ranked teams. Nebraska 5. But here's the catch, when Michigan played Colorado, Colorado was ranked. When Nebraska played them they weren't ranked. Same team, but Michigan gets credit for beating a ranked team while Nebraska doesn't. B.S. Nebraska was better, plain and simple.
Nebraska also played 13 games Michigan played 12. Nebraska also destroyed the SEC champs (Tennessee) and every BIG Ten team that played an SEC team in the bowl games lost. Michigan fans need to stop fucking whining and consider yourselves lucky you got half a national championship, because if you had played Nebraska you wouldn't have gotten even that.
Michigan blew this Washington State squad out by 5 points. Nebraska squeaked by Peyton Manning'sTennesse, only winning 42-17, a much closer game than this, by a team ranked 3, which is much lower than 7.
Michigan had a little bit better defense, but Nebraska had by far a better offense and coaching. They were the better team. And, for the record, all Michigan's wins they want to point to ended up being not as impressive, because their schedule was exposed as the season wore on. Wins against Notre Dame, Michigan State, Iowa, and Colorado were not impressive. Michigan slipped past Ohio State who, in turn, was whipped by Florida State. Nebraska, on the other hand, beat up the SEC champions and also handily beat Kansas State, who decisively won a BCS bowl game. They also beat Washington in Seattle when they were at the top of their game, before they were decimated by injuries.
I turned 16 on this day, and talk about a really awsome birthday present! Just wish that would happen alittle more often. GO BLUE!!! HAIL TO THE VICTORS!
That "no call" on an obviously blown offensive pass interference against Woodson with 9 seconds left drove my dad and me mad! We were at the game and everyone around us was apoplectic; but more than that we were terrified since the lead was only 5 points! I tell you, that the feeling in the stadium after the game from the U of M fans was no joy or elation but relief that they had done it. We had gotten our tickets through the alumni association and stayed at a hotel filled with other U of M fans who had done the same. They does us to the game and back on buses and on the ride back there was not that much celebration. Like I mentioned before, everyone was just drained after being on a wire for that whole game. And that blown call with 9 seconds left was just driving people into a nervous frenzy. If Michigan lost we would've been beyond pissed off.
He sure hasn't lived up to expectations so far. Is hope on the horizon, or do you think administration is going to look for a replacement? (I promise, I am not trying to rub it in. I am no Michigan fan, but I thought Jim Harbaugh would accomplish a lot more to this point)
Hilarious @ 14:41! Ryan Leaf throws a touchdown pass, and like 10 seconds later, he is already on the sideline with a baseball cap on. Ryan Leaf was the worst leader, ever! I'll never forget, a close friend of one of leaf's teammates, at Washington State, told me one time that everyone hated Ryan Leaf at Washington State. Why did the chargers ever draft him? Leadership is so important at the Quarterback position!
+Ty Tratar Chargers wanted Peyton also. But Since Indy had the 1st pick, they had to settle for Leaf- Both teams needed a QB badly. And the chargers thought "What's the worst that can happen?"... I know... It was kinda like Luck/RG3 in 2012, but times 10. Did everyone think that RG3 would be struggling?
Those who supported leaf were emotionally convinced Those who supported manning were intellectually convinced. Argument was... leaf had the better arm, but Peyton was smarter. Leaf and manning both took that test for players I forget what it’s called I think the wonderlic but both of their scores were nearly identical. Manning was more forthright While leaf was more of an enigma (meaning mysterious) Colts gm quote. Leafs got a stronger arm but Peyton is our guy. But I’ve talked to several charger fans and the majority of them told me when leaf was drafted they weren’t dissapointed I guess they thought that leaf was gonna be that guy I mean he did take Washington’s to the rose bowl and he had talent but he just wasn’t ready for the spotlight and was too immature.
Should've been offensive pass interference on WSU receiver at 2:05:20. He pushed the Heisman Trophy and National Champion Woodson to the ground. Terrible no call. Oh well, the right team won!
Totally agree. UM won most of that 3rd and 4th qtr with ease, even with the score being close. The WSU receiver totally and Blatantly Pass Interfered, and Michigan would have held WSU on 3rd and very long and the rest would have been History. Fight On!
Well, in college, immature idiots with massive egos but 1 great physical skill can shine. The train ends there. He can enjoy the COLLEGE football Hall of Fame with his Mature Maestros...Johnny Manziel and Vince Young.
Michigan and Nebraska missed out on being able to settle the score on the field by one season. The Bowl Coalition that had transformed to the Bowl Alliance just after Penn State and Nebraska each ran the table in the 1994 season morphed in to the Bowl Championship Series for the 1998 season. Had the system been put in place one year earlier, the Wolverines and Huskers would have been paired up in a BCS National Championship Game, instead of Michigan being locked in to playing the Pac 10 champion in the Rose Bowl.
The Big Ten and Pac-10 unfortunately screwed themselves over prior to 1998 when it comes to national championships. After split titles in 1991, they tried to create a system to AVOID split titles, but the Big Ten and Pac-10 refused to abandon their tradition of their respective conference champions always playing in the Rose Bowl, a tradition that had long been outdated. As a result, #2 Penn State could not play #1 Nebraska in a bowl game and was denied a championship in 1994 through no fault of their own despite an undefeated, untied season like Nebraska. Then in 1996, undefeated #2 Arizona State could not play undefeated #1 Florida State in a bowl game, and as it turned out, BOTH teams lost and a team that really shouldn't have won the national championship that year, did (not that Florida didn't deserve it, but still). And then 1997. #2 Nebraska could not play #1 Michigan in a bowl game because of the outdated tradition, and through a series of conditions less in favor of Michigan such as many other Big Ten teams losing in bowl games and less dominance over most of the games they played, including the bowl game they played, and more in favor of Nebraska such as more dominance over most of the games they played, including the bowl game they played, combined with Tom Osborne retiring that year, ANOTHER split title resulted, along with the lingering controversies that will forever go on.
If the official listens to Jackson and Griese and calls the offensive pass interference there is no controversy here. Wash St. would still get their chance from the 1 and NO 50yard completion. They gave Wash St. so many chances to win that i think they knew they looked bad! Who else saw the Ref "tuck" (Tom Brady, Michigan) that bright yellow into his pants when he knew the call? What a joke! Congrats to the Wolverines as this makes up for Webber's timeout!
When you have 5 wide recievers of course you're gonna have a great year as a quarterback!! Too bad the NFL scouts couldn't figure that out!! Ryan Leaf was a joke!! GO BLUE!!
Wazzu had a hell of a good team that year, only 1 loss up to that point, on the road to a top 20 squad. They did have outstanding receivers, also a 1,000 yrd back in Michael Black. I went to OSU, and Charles was just the ultimate weapon. All around, I still think his season that year is of the greatest singular value that I've ever seen. He did it all. This was 1 of the better Rose Bowls. Leaf was Manziel before Manziel. The signs of immaturity were there....you can get away with it in college(Lawrence Phillips, Johnny, VY, etc), but not in the pros. The day Ryan was drafted, he got arrested at a bar in Pullman for dumping a pitcher over a guy's head that started a fight. That was the telltale sign right there. Maturity counts for a LOT once your name is called on draft day. Ryan was a zero in that department.
"Possibly the worst call" belongs to the non-call on the offensive pass interference play. The receiver mugged Woodson, who was in great position for an INT. That would have ended the game, right there.

@@jamieborden9094 Respect where respect is due. Michigan had a very good or possibly a great team. Nebraska was just better. I have always found it comical this many years later reading Michigan fanboys crow on about how great their schedule was and how lax Nebraska's was. Which team defeated more teams that finished the season in the Top 25? Yep, Nebraska. Which team defeated more teams that finished in the Top 10 that season? Yep, Nebraska again. Both teams played an opponent that went to an Alliance Bowl Game at home. Which win was more impressive? Hmm. Michigan slipped past their Alliance opponent by one score, and that opponent was then crushed in the Sugar Bowl. Nebraska's opponent won the Fiesta Bowl, finished 7th, and yet Nebraska beat them by 30 points. None of Michigan's opponents who went to bowl games in 1997 won their bowl games...in fact, the average margin of defeat was over 19 points. So much for Strength of Schedule. "But, but, WHAT ABOUT MISSOURI?!? They CHEATED to win that game!!!" Okay, so Nebraska is supposed to be penalized because one of their oldest rivals stood up and played them hard? The play at the end of regulation was not illegal, because the rules were ambiguous. You can use any part of your body to tip the ball to yourself, which the receiver clearly was trying to do. To me, the game showed Nebraska's championship mettle. A power run team is down by a touchdown, First Down on their own 33 yard line, 1:02 left and no timeouts, they should have been Dead To Rights. Good teams are likely to lose in those situations. Champions find ways to win even when everything works against them. A good response is pointing out Michigan struggling to beat a very overrated Notre Dame team by only one score at home (finished the season unranked and lost their bowl by 18 points), and then the next week having to pull one out of their rear ends to beat a 5-loss Iowa team (also finished unranked and lost their bowl by 10 points), also by only one score at home. Iowa had them in the ropes, and Michigan was very lucky to win that game. Given the fact that they couldn't play each other, a split was probably the best outcome for both teams. Both the Wolverines and Cornhuskers did everything they were asked to do and looked pretty good doing it. But, in a hypothetical matchup, Nebraska clearly is the favorite. Anyone saying either team wins in a blowout is nuts. That game goes right up there with SoCal vs. Texas and Clemson vs. Alabama II.
As a die hard UofM fan... had the BS non OPI call been made... I’d feel a little remorse about the spike not having 1 second left... but that was a 50 YD gift... get over it.
Don't feel bad about it. On the play right before, the clock doesn't run for two full seconds after the snap. The timekeeper was making up for the time that should have elapsed during the prior play.
am i the only one that sees this. After the hook and ladder. Jefferson gets tackled with 3 seconds left.Ref blows his whistle. its a first down,so clock stops. clearly 3 sec were left. 2 seconds later. clock changes to 2 sec. Im still pissed
It is clearly not the worst call in history. I can name 3 from Michigan football history alone where the call went the wrong way, and there was a direct score result from it. In this case, Leaf still had to make one more play into the endzone, and Michigan had Charles Woodson. It is a, coulda won, rather than a shoulda won. Shoulda outweighs coulda every time.
Not the worst call at all. WSU never should have got the ball down as far as they did. The WSU receiver should have been called for Blatant Pass Interference and that was the blown call. UM should have won without the game being that tight.
Brian Griesie started over Tom Brady...that's crazy! And to think that Keith Jackson got the job to do college football after being wrongful terminated from Monday Night Football.
Yes it did. The clock operater goofed and started it when the ball was snapped. But after a first down in college the clock stops to move the chains, then resumes when the referee signals ready for play. The clock was not supposed to start later on the snap (if it did, WSU would not have been in a hurry to spike the ball) mistakenly showing a second left when the ball hit the turf. Still dont believe me? Watch the end of the 2012 rose bowl to see pretty much the exact same thing happen. And was confirmed with replay review.
#1 Michigan vs #2 Nebraska in 1997...The high-powered Nebraska offense versus the #1 defense of Michigan. Realistically, here's what I believe had they played against each other that year: I don't care what die-hard Michigan or Nebraska fans post or claim. The game would be decided by one score, i.e. 8 points or less. I cannot see the Michigan offense moving very easily against Nebraska's defense which also was very solid overall. I also cannot see the Nebraska offense moving as effectively as they normally had throughout the season against Michigan's defense. This would result in more bend but less break on both defensive sides in terms of yards and points given up. Nebraska only had 12 of their punts returned for 75 yards for the entire season, which would make it very difficult for Charles Woodson to have good punt returns, if at all. Nebraska would more than likely rush for, at bare minimum, 125 yards less than they normally would and 225 yards at maximum. As such, they likely would rush for 165-185 yards less than they normally would. I also think neither team would score over 29 points but also not under 20 points. In addition, I believe at least one team would have an unusual score like 22, 25, 26, or 29 due to scoring more field goals than touchdowns and likely a 2-PAT that is unsuccessful. It would all depend on certain x-factors like how well Scott Frost could throw against the Michigan defense, how well Michigan's average offense can play against Nebraska's above-average defense, how many turnovers each team can get and points scored on thereof, and how well Nebraska can limit Charles Woodson on special teams. As such, neither team would have a significant advantage over the other and all it would take is one timely play to change the game for either side. If Michigan caused more turnovers than Nebraska and hold Nebraska to 200 yards below average while limiting Scott Frost's passing, Michigan would win with 25-29 points and Nebraska 20-24 points. If Nebraska instead could limit turnovers given up while rushing and passing better than expected, Nebraska would win with similar scores.
Coulda, shoulda, woulda.........blah, blah, blah...........injuries happen to all teams..............Michigan won and WSU fans are still butt-hurt after all this time.
Call the obvious offensive pass interference, you have no controversy about the clock! That was the refs way of saying they fucked up the offensive p.i. call! So stop your whining about that!
Joseph Dungee what I meant was the "powerhouse" of each program. In colege fotball, I always find it interesting when an 5 star team plays a more modest team, especially at their home stadium, in this case Michigan. it's the rose bowl, but how do they eventually find each other at the end, coming from two vastly different places and ratings and conferences.
+Benson Saavedra Well, sometimes we see Pac 10 teams and Big Ten teams meet up in the regular season. I've been to 4 Big Ten campuses, Madison, Evanston, Columbus, and Ann Arbor and I've been to 3 Pac Ten campuses, Tempe, Los Angeles (UCLA), and Berkeley. The culture of the campuses of these conferences is vastly different. This year we will either get Iowa vs Stanford, Michigan State vs Stanford, Iowa vs USC, or Michigan State vs USC. It's amazing seeing the difference between Iowa City and Los Angeles or East Lansing and Stanford, every single city is unique, frankly, I was a little disappointed they gave away the Rose Bowl last year because Arizona would've played in their first Rose Bowl against Michigan State.
While Michigan barely got by a soft Washington State team, Nebraska beat the pants out of Tennessee and Peyton Manning in the Orange Bowl. Between Michigan and Nebraska you tell me who deserved The National Championship.
@@alexjones3511 Missouri would likely beat WSU. The fact that two questionable calls are the difference in the Rose makes Michigan look very beatable..But..Rock U vs Paper A&m vs Scissors State..Makes even the current 4 team playoff somewhat interesting.
Just watched the game for the first time today. Michigan deserves an * beside this victory and the NC, since, because of poor timekeeping, WSU didn't get their final second on the clock. Not a WSU fan, just a fan of fairness.
At 2:08:53 (the play immediately preceding the final play) the clock doesn't start for two full seconds after Leaf snaps the ball. The timekeeper made up for it on the next down.
I despise FSU, but from 1996-2000, it's a small wonder they won only one National Championship. Runners-up in 1996, 1998, and 2000, and finished a close 3rd in 1997. Yeah, they were pretty friggin' good back then!!
Worse than that was not calling the obvious offensive pass interference on 3rd down. If the receiver hadn't shoved Woodson out of the way, he never would have caught the pass. Keep crying about WSU not getting an extra second that they never should have been in a position to get in the first place.
I never understood why the refs didn't stop the clock. WSU rightfully had one play left (but Woodson would never have allowed the winning TD!) Leaf was so stupid, he would have thrown in Woodson's direction!!
+Idan O'Reilly I understand why they didn't stop the clock. If you watch the second-to-last play of the game at 2:08:52, the clock doesn't start for a full 2.5 seconds after the ball is snapped. I think the timekeeper (and officials) realized this and attempted to make up for it on the final play.
Great point (I didn't know that). Having grown up listening to Keith Jackson though he basically had a love affair with Big Blue (I don't know HOW many MU games I watched on ABC but it was LOT..lol)
+Joseph Dungee The other announcer for this game alongside Keith was Bob Griese who is Brian Griese's father. Imagine trying not to show bias during a National Championship game when your son is the quarterback for one of the teams lol. That must have been the best moment of Bob's announcing career by far when the game was over and his son got the MVP and the win.
There schedules were not that much different, they both played 5-6 colorado, nebraska played washington, kansas state, texas a&m, and tennessee. while Michigan played 7-5 michigan state, 7-5 iowa, 9-3 penn state, 8-5 wisconsin, 7-6 Notre Dame, 3-9 minnesota among others, and they ended up beating an ohio state team that was equally beaten by florida state, and then squeeked by washingtion state.
Michigan Rose Bowl hiding champions' Brave Nebraska wanted to play for a national championship. Play any body any place any where. The Bowl Alliance national championship belongs to Nebraska. Nebraska is a team of honor. No Rose Bowl hiding for this team.
That's what I've been posting. They were Rose Bowl hiding cowards who did not play in the Bowl Alliance which later became the BCS. All the other conferences wanted a national championship game. Brave Nebraska from the start wanted a national championship game. They would never hide in the Rose Bowl and then claim a co-national championship. Rose Bowl contract or no elitist Rose Bowl contract. Such dishonor not joining the Bowl Alliance. Nebraska was a team who would play anybody any place any where and never hide behind their mothers skirt in the elitist private country club called the overrated Rose Bowl.
If it has lower ranked teams playing in it and receives the prime New Years time slot and more media coverage than bowls with higher ranked teams, teams of merit, it means it's waaay overrated.
Nebraska-42 Peyton Manning Tennessee-17 Michigan-21 Ryan Leaf WSU-16 That's proof enough there. Also the big10 was awful in the bowl season which shows how weak the big10 was. Manning was robbed of the Heisman. Must've been some maize and blue cool aid the voters were sipping on. I would've loved to see Griese vs the Nebraska defense. Wistrom and Peter would've had a field day with him and that lousy Michigan offense. Michigan would've gotten embarrassed. They should be thanking their lucky stars they avoided Nebraska. Tom Osborne vs Lloyd Carr? lol tom would've made him look like a middle school coach. Everyone laughs when Michigan tries to claim 97. All know Nebraska was much much better and better coached. Go home Michigan, you're drunk.
What u talking about, THE MEDIA claimed Michigan was national champs. The only reason u guys were considered was cuz u went undefeated and the coaches didn’t want Michigan to be at top again😂 dummie get your facts correct
how Leaf and Manning did in the nfl is not indicative of how they played in their bowl games. Ryan Leaf was the better quarterback in January 1998. He carried his team while Peyton had a much better supporting cast. Look at Tenn (natl champ) and WSU (no bowl) the next year to see how they did without their 97 qb.
Joseph Dungee I understand that you are an upset Nebraska fan. I get it. both won a poll but michigan is considered more. I think if they played in a game it would of been a good one.
AJ GK I'll go with that and considering Nebraska received the Alliance trophy I was satisfied with winning that in the Orange Bowl. It was a bad time with the polls back then.

Michigan came out tight , but Woodson had the big Int !
It’s funny to hear that 4th down “you suck” chant 22 years ago while you still hear it every 4th down nowadays
“Time has run out!”
How about the offensive pass interference that wasn't called on wsu? That's worse, Go Blue, Always.
For all those saying Wash St. should have had a second left to run another play, the EXACT SAME PLAY happened at the end of the 2012 Rose Bowl and Wisconsin tried to spike the ball with two seconds following a first down. It didn't work and instant replay confirmed it. Watching the end of the 2012 edition, I was yelling something to my friends like "Did they not know what happened in 1998?"
In this game, the scoreboard clock operator mistakenly started the clock on the snap, not when the ref signaled ready for play (after the chains had been set following a first down) which added to the confusion.
+Joseph Dungee Shut up bro damn.
Joseph Dungee
Well maybe your Nebraska bias is showing.
Joseph Dungee
Yeah, Tenessee was dominated by Nebraska.
Oh man, what great memories!! GO BLUE let's do it again!!!
This was the Natty for the 1997 season, hell yeah! #GoBlue

They should have forced Nebraska vs Michigan. Such a sham the number 1 team playing number 7 or 8 when we new exactly who the two best teams were. Feels like they robbed both teams and one team from true glory. College football really pissed me off with this stuff as a kid back then.
@@brando4422 Nebraska would of stomped them
@@johnwaffleh2p70 I think so to! But wish they played so Michigan fans didn't act like they won it because we had Woodson. Most overrated football team in college ever.
@@mia2005able 😂😂
Michigan beat more ranked teams the games we played weren't even close the argument that Nebraska won is absurd
Nebraska beat more teams that were ranked at the end of the year.
Also it's a great thing they changed this shitty system playoffs are way better than polls honestly
Carson Hicks Eh.
If Michigan lost we would've been beyond pissed off.
keep in mind, that hail Mary game vs. Colorado was only 3 and half years ago at that point, so I'm sure that was in the back of your mind as well

+Sitizen Kane RG3 lead the Redskins to the playoffs and only because of the poor handling by the Redskins did he decline as a player
Is he done?
Those who supported leaf were emotionally convinced
Those who supported manning were intellectually convinced.
Argument was... leaf had the better arm, but Peyton was smarter.
Leaf and manning both took that test for players I forget what it’s called I think the wonderlic but both of their scores were nearly identical.
Manning was more forthright
While leaf was more of an enigma (meaning mysterious)
Colts gm quote.
Fight On!
The fact that Penn State wasn't afforded a split title with Nebraska in 1994 the way Michigan was in 1997 is and always will be complete BS
Dude they got so hosed on that clock at the end

I'm a Michigan fan, but I have to admit Washington St. got screwed on their spike. 1 second should have remained on the clock
Dalton G Yeah...what about the free 50 yards given to WSU on what should have been pass interference?
It was to make up for the play right before that at 2:08:53. The clock doesn't start for two full seconds after Leaf snaps the ball.
The only time someone said Ryan Leaf is a QB you would like to have
Well, in college, immature idiots with massive egos but 1 great physical skill can shine. The train ends there. He can enjoy the COLLEGE football Hall of Fame with his Mature Maestros...Johnny Manziel and Vince Young.
Shared? Michigan would've beaten Nebraska.
Especially since Missouri exposed them in the flea kicker game.
Well it worked out well for Michigan, had they had to play Nebraska they wouldn't have gotten a share of the national championship
@@chuckr9938 Nebraska would've lost 56-10
@@sikid4000 Bullshit!!!!!
Even if Michigan beat North Carolina, they would have vacated it anyway. Although I hate the NCAA revisionist bs.
Alex Jones That would have been good.
GO BLUE!!!

I wish Bob Ufer were alive to broadcast this.
Your watching the greatest cornerback ever.
You're
Uh, the clock didn't run out at the end there.

This was a great game
Don't forget about the blatant offensive pass interference that got WSU to midfield.
#1 Michigan vs #2 Nebraska in 1997...The high-powered Nebraska offense versus the #1 defense of Michigan. Realistically, here's what I believe had they played against each other that year:
I don't care what die-hard Michigan or Nebraska fans post or claim.
The Nebraska team that needed overtime and some highly questionable calls to beat a Mizzou team that finished 7-6 that year? Oh yeah, real close game.

If it has lower ranked teams playing in it and receives the prime New Years time slot and more media coverage than bowls with higher ranked teams, teams of merit, it means it's waaay overrated.
Airport Runway You forgot about some of the greatest teams that ever played in the Rose Bowl.
Nebraska joined the big ten and of course not winning. In 1989 Michigan was the only number 1 period...
Nebraska-42 Peyton Manning Tennessee-17
Michigan-21 Ryan Leaf WSU-16
That's proof enough there.
What sickening hosing of WSU at the end. and that supposed Off. pass intereference isn't always called in normal circumstances.
Joseph Dungee I understand that you are an upset Nebraska fan. I get it. both won a poll but michigan is considered more. I think if they played in a game it would of been a good one.

I'll go with that and considering Nebraska received the Alliance trophy I was satisfied with winning that in the Orange Bowl. It was a bad time with the polls back then.
