His 1987 hit single 'Barcelona' saw Freddie sing alongside with one of the world's most revered and respected opera singers, Montserrat Caballé. The song was a huge success around the world, and Freddie achieved his dream of singing opera with his most beloved opera singer. Yes, Freddie wrote the song for her.
Freddie was one of the most diverse singers I've ever heard. Freddie & Montserrat recorded a whole album together and there are two other performances on TH-cam that are fantastic. "The Golden Boy" as mentioned by someone else and "How Can I Go On". The song Barcelona was used in the opening ceremonies for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona but sadly Freddie passed away a year before and would never see the great honor done to his song. Montserrat was a world renowned soprano and was known as "La Superba" in the opera world. She was Freddie's favorite singer. They really had great chemistry together and a mutual love and respect that lasted the rest of their lives. I am so glad that you enjoyed this and I hope you'll check out the other two songs mentioned above!
I love this album so much! ❤ Freddie has said Montserrat has the most beautiful soprano voice and wanted to capture it. They were supposed to sing this at the 1992 Olympic games in Barcelona but Freddie died the previous year. 😭 You should check out "How Can I Go On" from the same album. It's such a beautiful song! I like it even more than Barcelona.
A painting !! .... great analogy. It's so amazing that Freddie left us this, his legacy, before he died - and that he got to create his dream with Monty. You need to do The Golden Boy - the mix of rock, opera and soul.
It was a huge experience for that time - one of the greatest opera singer had no fear to sing with a non opera singer and of the top of this - he was no hetero and had aids - unthinkable, nobody would be that foolhardy to risk the career. Monserrat was so famous and great and didn’t care. I am not sure if somebody who lives today can imagine how risky that was. It was not good for your reputation of an opera singer to collaborate with other genres or omg with somebody who was not morally integer. Shout out to a great person - Caballe 👏 Love from Austria/Europe 🇦🇹
Great reaction, and analysis of this amazing duet. From everything thing posted about them, they truly loved each other as friends. Freddie called her Montsy.. he shared his illness status with her, so she knew he likely wouldn’t be alive to perform this at the Olympics in 1992. I believe she probably could have blown him off the stage if she really wanted to ‘go there’, but, as you so eloquently said.. they complemented each other rather than competed. Thank-you.. and please consider reacting to other songs on this album they did together.
That was a fantastic analogy. I've never heard their combo described so well. They each did their own "thing" and alone would have been good, but the combination of the two is greater than the sum of the parts.
RIP both of them, Freddy Mercury and Montserrat Caballé. This two best friends are now reunited and singing together again in the big concert in heaven
Thanks, Freddie and "Montsy" were so much in love... the combination of his "rock sound" and her opera talent were amazing.... hope you hear more from them...(she was much more than a "backing singer"!)
Don't forget, that Freddie was an untrained singer. He said in an interview modestly „You can be operatic, but that doesn't mean that you are an opera singer.” Montserrat the great diva was brave enough to dive herself into a whole new musical world that Freddie offered to her, because she very soon realized The Musician in Freddie.
Simplesmente magnífico! Dois Ícones saudades eternas..... O Freddie era sensacional em tudo que fazia , brilhante 🌟 belo magnífico!!!! Queen belo !!!! Obrigada por sua reação 😘
They composed this together to hopefully be used by the Barcelona Olympic Committee as the official song for its 1992 Games. Unfortunately, Freddie died in 1991. Although not the official Olympic theme, it was performed by Caballe as part of the Opening Ceremonies.
So thankful you did this.... Michael was Every girls heart Throb for sure, one of a kind, these two voices blend so well, with a Needed Message From back then, think they'd be Crushed in Heart these many years later. 💔 Heavenly Voices
This song was written for Montserrat as Barcelona was the city of her birth. If you pull up the translation of the Spanish parts she is singing it adds another dimension to it. Just beautiful
HEY HON... The two MOST AMAZING SONGS on the Barcelona album are: "EXERCISES IN FREE LOVE" and "ENSUENO" ("Exercises In Free Love" is a Demo vocal exercise that Freddie recorded, singing Montserrat's SOPRANO part... Some reactors mistakenly think it's Montserrat singing! "Ensueno" is the finished song - a duet - with Montserrat singing the soprano part that Fred had sung in the first version, and Freddie singing with her in OPERATIC BARITONE... something Montserrat said she "talked Freddie into doing" and then "gave him pointers" for.)
This pairing of one of the greatest rock artist with one of the greatest opera singers in history was legendary. Freddie was in awe of Montserrat Caballe. I idolized her. He wrote this rock opera. This still brings the good chills to me. Thank you for your excellent reaction to this masterpiece. I wish you and yours all things bright and beautiful.
This performance was for the celebration of the Barcelona Olympics. Freddie already knew he had AIDS. I still get chilled when I view this magnificent performance. Thank you for your brilliant and intelligent reactions. i am proud to become a subscriber. Well done.
Gorgeous! Now you gotta see James Brown and Luciano Pavarotti - it’s epic- It’s A Man’s World with full orchestra. Monserrat adds the SPARKLE! Great catch on MJ- he does indeed sound like Freddy!
You've experienced a collaboration between a magnificent Opera diva, Montserrat Caballe' and an equally magnificent popular vocalist Freddie Mercury. Their Album is "Barcelona". Please react to "The Golden Boy" and "How Can I Go On". . . . also, "The Fallen Priest"
Is funny that at the beginning of every reaction I’ve seen of this song everybody think Freddy is the star. At the end all wonder who is she. Monserrat carries the whole weight of the song and Freddy knows it. Once Freddy was asked who has always been his biggest idol as a singer. He didn’t doubt: Montserrat Caballé.
Montserrat Caballe was not singing background. Ever. Respect. What a fantastic combination they were! Such a powerful duo who adored each other. Regarding Michael Jackson...they were not close. Freddie knew him, they did try to record a song together, Michael went to a Queen show, but pretty sure that was it. Music industry friends I suppose. Very close...definitely not.
Talking about Freddie's enfluence on MJ, please watch "Liar" Live at the Rainbow, and check out Freddie's metal glove, long before MJ chose it. It warms my heart that he loved Freddie that much. So much enfluence especially in "Billy Jean". Check out all the Queen vibes to understand this! th-cam.com/video/FK9YSri2xNQ/w-d-xo.html
I discovered Queen through the Highlander movie and that song brought me to tears. It's still one of my top 3 most beautiful love songs ever written. ❤
I haven't read all the comments so this may have been mentioned, but you need to watch "The Golden Duet" with Michael and Freddie!! Awesome! th-cam.com/video/dkcdSj4qBWU/w-d-xo.html
calling the great Montserrat Caballe a back singer makes me wonder if you should be allowed to make these videos. without disrupt, you couldn't even pronounce her name! Very poor

Dude, the joy on your face is priceless. Freddie proved he could do it all. ❤
This was shortly before Freddie passed away. But a dream come true for him to sing opera. He was so versatile ❤❤❤❤
I'm only 19 but Im really in love with Freddie.
Go to Barcelona and you will hear this played everywhere,

You can NEVER have too much Queen! There is a Queen song for every person and genre!
That was a fantastic analogy. I've never heard their combo described so well. They each did their own "thing" and alone would have been good, but the combination of the two is greater than the sum of the parts.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great metaphor. Freddie is definitely the color of a song.
Your smile during this song was really into the vibe
RIP both of them, Freddy Mercury and Montserrat Caballé. This two best friends are now reunited and singing together again in the big concert in heaven
Love that thumbnail pic. Such an amazing accomplishment.
Thanks, Freddie and "Montsy" were so much in love... the combination of his "rock sound" and her opera talent were amazing.... hope you hear more from them...(she was much more than a "backing singer"!)
Beautiful performance. It takes my breath away every time.

Huh? It's very well documented that he was classically trained & had a 5 octave range.
@@sarahholland2600
Freddie was a classically trained pianist - vocally, he had no formal training.
This was so so fun to watch. Great reaction and comments. Made me smile big time.
I'm so glad!
This was a great reaction..your lovely smile throughout the performance said it all..MORE MORE Freddie please ❤ 🇬🇧
Both Freddie Mercury and Monserat Caballe are no longer living, but their pivotal moment of joining rock with opera will live on forever.
I like how Mug can't wipe that smile away. this song just hits that way.
MORE FREDDIE! 🥂...
and MORE QUEEN 👑🔥 ofcourse! 😊
Simplesmente magnífico! Dois Ícones saudades eternas..... O Freddie era sensacional em tudo que fazia , brilhante 🌟 belo magnífico!!!! Queen belo !!!! Obrigada por sua reação 😘
I joined ur channel this morning I am a huge Queen an Freddie Mercury fan an I love your reactions 😍❤🎉

You Yourself Painted a Picture with your comment, that was Awesome....."There Must be More to Life than This" is Michael & Freddie's
Collab 🫶

This song was the Olympic Song to the Olympic Games Barcelona 1992

Seven octave range one of the biggest ranges

Now do Golden Boy by Freddie and Montsy it will take you to church.
As much as I love Barcelona, my favourite song from this album will always be Golden Boy.
Always more Queen 👑❤
Dude, with all respect, watching a hard ass dude like you enjoying this made my evening :)
and then you came with the shadow metaphor...dude, you rock!
This was the first opera cross over
"Mon-sir-aht Cah-bah-yeh" ;).
Freddie (and many others) considered her the greatest singer in the world.
You smiled thru the entire song.
This performance was for the celebration of the Barcelona Olympics. Freddie already knew he had AIDS. I still get chilled when I view this magnificent performance. Thank you for your brilliant and intelligent reactions. i am proud to become a subscriber. Well done.

You got the picture of this song. Spot on. By the way you have got a lovely 😊

Montserrat Maravilhosa !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You need to look up state of shock and there must be more to life than this with Freddie and Michael Jackson...
Just beautiful
Barcelona is the appetizer, The Golden Boy is the entree! Enjoy
This always make the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end ❤❤❤
As you can tell Freddy has lost a lot of weight he had AIDS when he was doing this song with opera star rest in peace Freddy😢😢😢❤❤
Nobody but NOBODY could, can now or ever will sing like Freddy. His voice quality and ability is unrivaled.
Montserrat Caballe was not singing background. Ever. Respect. What a fantastic combination they were! Such a powerful duo who adored each other. Regarding Michael Jackson...they were not close. Yes amazing ❤
CÂTĂ ELEGANȚĂ,CÂT RAFINAMENT,TE LASĂ FARA CUVINTE👏👏👏MULȚUMESC PT. APRECIERE👏👏👏👏
“Imagine a painting”…sorry but that’s pretty damned brilliant. Very nice, clever review.
your great big smile says it all
Yes MJ was influenced by Freddie, especially their Hot Space album...like your enthusiasm
Yes shes was very frendly with fredy😂
I reckon you don’t give Montserrat enough credit. I love Freddie but Montserrat is something else.
look up Freddie and Micheal Jackson singing together.
When Freddy make live concert he make full stadiums
The Idol of Freddy is Montserrat caballe
Vau, amezing...God bless all!
Sadly neither are still with us. Montserrat Caballé was born in Barcelona and she died in 2018 (aged 85) in Barcelona.
Please please be respectful and don’t interrupt this epic - let us enjoy it in its entirety and give your reaction at the end. Thank you
Not Opera _ perfection. Enjoy😊
I think you’ll find Opera is perfection, above anything mainstream.
Try golden boy…..amazing!!🎼🇬🇧🎼
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

You should try Queen's who wants to live forever
I discovered Queen through the Highlander movie and that song brought me to tears. It's still one of my top 3 most beautiful love songs ever written. ❤
Please, react to The golden boy. ❤
You said her first name right but her last name is pronounced as Ka ball yay
Sorry but Montserrat Caballe was not 'backing' vocals. Freddie wrote this song for her and they complement each other perfectly.
Backing vocals are not to insult the artist
I haven't read all the comments so this may have been mentioned, but you need to watch "The Golden Duet" with Michael and Freddie!! Awesome! th-cam.com/video/dkcdSj4qBWU/w-d-xo.html
Montserrat as 'backing vocal'! No No No No No
It's fine, most don't understand the language of audio production.
Influenciado por michael Jackson, o al revés???? ahí dejo la pregunta
Sorry, but they're not "backing vocals." You're missing a big part of this piece.
Then please elaborate if I misinterpreted it, tell me what it is
calling the great Montserrat Caballe a back singer makes me wonder if you should be allowed to make these videos. without disrupt, you couldn't even pronounce her name! Very poor
