Erm... he is, just like 'Bubbles teaches guitar' in the Trailer Park Boys comedy series. That was a spoof but the actor (Mike Smith) really was a musician and passed on practice tips and licks which were valid. In fact, since that was a good 10 years ago, it's probably where Ricky nicked the idea for this. And that guitar he is playing on... it's a Martin, one of the oldest guitar production companies on the planet as played by Eric Clapton on the historic MTV Unplugged. Even if it is the budget DS HPL line, you are looking at £750 so he is either being ironic (Brent wasting money on an expensive guitar) or he is sending a message that 'actually, I (Ricky) know my shit under this bit of comedy' - I think it's the latter. And he is a musician and former pop artist.
Get a feeling david brent is a whole lot of frustrated ricky gervais. some of them are not actually bad little songs. Particularly like his bowie effort
Hi David I've been trying to learn guitar for 30 years now to no avail. I watched your 5 min video and suddenly it all makes sense!! Thanks very much for this!!!!
Mark Morgan 😂😂.. Yeah... Brilliant bit of ironic comedy there from Ricky... defines Brents character completely.... also.......“ and if this was a chord it would be called..... ‘Twat’ .....” comedy gold right there ! 😂😂
i even went out and bought the same acoustic guitar as this man, he is so good at what he does. I've only just started now, but i think he has taught me enough to keep me going from here. Thank you so much David Brent for all the great help, you are indeed the guitar master of masters, now acknowledged, and understood :). You will be welcome in my little house in Ireland anytime for a seisiún
When I found these videos I said, "Giddy up". My guitar playing and singing has significantly improved thanks to these outstanding lessons, tutorials and demonstrations. The performances in these videos demonstrates pure guitar playing skill and true singing ability. This is the way I wish all "artists" could sound. Thanks so much for posting these most excellent videos for aspiring musicians like myself.
@brownwings00 The guitar is a difficult instrument. With David Brent's instructions, he makes it seem easy. Hang in there. With a little patience you will slowly get the hang of it. Use these instructional videos as motivation.
I’m 73 ,tried playing the Guitar for years , but after watching David I learnt the three chord tritone trick , I’ve even got a groupie , Molly from next door
A genuinely good and inspiring video especially for anyone just starting out on guitar. We can't all be Satriani, Vai or Buckethead and Ricky is absolutely right, a few simple chords is all you need to be able play some very satisfying tunes. At the end of the day, picking the guitar up off the stand and playing is all that matters. I'm primarily a f̶a̶i̶l̶e̶d̶ ̶g̶u̶i̶t̶a̶r̶i̶s̶t̶ bass player and something that I love to do is just play some simple chords on guitar, loop it and then just riff the basslines under it. I can just drift off into my own little world for a couple of hours at a time doing that, it's very calming, best therapy in the world.
This is one amazing song, but the scene from the office where he plays this is just pure gold, one of the best scenes in any series ive ever seen!! you should watch the actual scene if you have never seen it!

Did anybody else catch the beautiful harmonics that resonated after 'David' rang out the final chord? Marvellous! Those Martin guitars are a treat... wish I had the ££££ for one..!
Keep in mind its tuned down a half step though so the notes on a normally tuned fret board would be B--F-B-E. The fingering is 1st finger 'D' string 9th fret, 2nd finger 'G' string 10th fret and the top two open strings.
Was lucky enough to see him at biggest gig on their tour, Cleghorn Potato Fete. Supported by Pink Floid, Prance (A horse based Prince tribute, they sang Purple Rein) and Pelvis and the Hound Dogs (actual dogs) .......Gotta say it was amazing, complete sell out. People were stunned by the display, Kennebec, Vitelotte, Yukon Gold and of course they had your King Edward, Duke of York, Russet and Red. They even had potato juggling and a cart with carriages shaped like French Fries. There was a poetry corner but we couldn't hear anything with the background music.
What Spinal Tap did for the band, David Brent does for the solo acoustic musician. The movie is extremely funny but also painfully sad at times. As for Freelove Highway; I am sorely tempted to gig it. Ricky Gervais created a wonderful niche and filled it brilliantly.
Gervais is easing the Brent character back into the public conciousness. With the announcement of the Batman/Superman movie and the positive buzz sorrounding Alpha Papa, Ricky's got a pitch for Steve Coogan
Ricky actually has a fairly good right hand fingerstyle technique. Wrist is in good position with the fingers properly slightly bent and articulated from the knuckles rather than the finger joints. I believe he was in a couple of semi-scucessful bands before he turned to comedy full time.
I can imagine someone watching this who has never watched the office, and thinking that this guy is seriously trying to teach guitar...
Jack Cobbett in a way he is

Jack Cobbett u ruined it dude

Always amused by how this song is genuinely catchy.
Probably because its not a million miles away from Free Fallin by Tom Petty
They're all really good honestly.
Four Chords is every catchy pop song ever written :)
Yep, because it is just as catchy as all the other songs that use the same chords; whatever sells.
@@dairymilkooarr3064 Free Love Freeway is one hell of a lot better than Free Fallin', that's for sure. (Tom Petty's "Ebony and Ivory.")

Nathan Nowell He was in a somewhat successful new wave band in the ‘80s
Good way to release the song whilst under the cover of character, very catchy, would've resolved with 'C', G, 'F' and 'C'.

Hi David
I've been trying to learn guitar for 30 years now to no avail. I watched your 5 min video and suddenly it all makes sense!! Thanks very much for this!!!!

I love how it’s filmed like a genuine amateur TH-cam chanel that does guitar tutorials
No, its recorded like all guitar dvds back in the days!!!

I lost it. Oh god.

Classic Brent 🤣
Nice Martin Guitar.
The beginning of the video gets me every time 🤣🤣 the face he pulls when he nods and when he says “Hi” 🤣🤣
don't forget the awkward head turn to follow the camera :)
plays random notes together: "That's probably a chord... in jazz" killed it
I don't care how many times I've seen this, but I just love it. The whole thing. The song, the video series.

Bloody hell Rick, you make it look easy mate.
The TWAT chord is also know as G#dim/D or Bm6no5/D...either is ok.....but I prefer TWAT
Makes it a lot easier. When I'm calling chords in a jam session it just makes it expedient to call out: "D, B minor, back to D, Twat..."
You worked it out. Well done!
