I find all pillows are bad for back sleeping. Sleeping without a pillow is better but, you have no neck support, this can lead to serious nerve pain in the neck. The solution is to use a small towel, fold it just enough times to provide support for your neck. At least that's what I have done, day 1, I feel amazing.

It seems to be an individual thing. For the last two years, I'd often wake up with neck pain and headaches which were only relieved by getting a Chiropractic adjustment. I tried multiple types of pillows and different pillow arrangements, including cervical pillows, water pillows, various heights of support. I sleep on my back and on my sides. I don't get in bed and stay in one position. Who does? For the last two nights I slept without any pillow, using my hand(s) as head support when on my side. We have an extra firm mattress. My neck and shoulders are pain free!

Ugh this makes so much sense...I do like sleeping on my back and started sleeping without a pillow. It seemed to help for a while but then I noticed my neck was getting worse and worse. I would often wake up on my side after falling asleep on my back. That’s probably why my neck was hurting so much when I would wake up. Also have a hard time keeping my neck straight when I’m sleeping. I would lay on my back but turn my head to the right side and fall asleep like that. I really need to fix my alignment..I think that’s like 75% of my neck issues.

I always avoid a pillow sleeping on back. It's a perfect sleep, but we need to get used to it like getting used to on a flat surface. I personally feel like sleeping on a hard surface without pillow can easily erase out 2 hours of sleep. Yes, easily. On a hard surface we cannot sleep more than needed. And it seriously kills all body tiredness and pain. Try it. It needs 7 days to get used to it. Since I can't do it now for some reason but when ever I find my body to be stiff and not relaxed I sleep on floor with using just a sheet or thin mat and it would turn to be like a yoga sleep for my body.

Don't sleep on side position, sleeping without pillow is best for stomach position sleeper and sleeping on back side is also okay but you must only sleep in this position and don't turn around in deep sleep to side position otherwise neck will feel more pressure and harmful effects will occur.

I start the night by sleeping on my back, with deep breathing techniques I fall asleep very easily. For some reason, I wake up usually at least once or twice throughout the night. When that occurs for whatever reason, falling back asleep is easily achieved when I rotate on one of my sides. I 1st start by rotating over onto my left shoulder, then when I awake again I rotate onto my right shoulder. Recently I lent my room to a friend and toughed it out sleeping on a camping mattress for a few nights, with minimal neck support & ever since I've been waking up most nights with pretty decent neck pain that goes up into my head... I hope to figure this issue out soon :) Thank you for this well-made video, Doc

Hi,I have been diagnosed with forward head carriage and right now am just getting better from a bad "flare" as I call it. I have stiffness in the neck, shoulder achiness, a painful pulling down the inside of my arm to the tips of my ring and pinky finger, and the pinky finger is slightly numb. My main source of pain is located on the side of my left shoulder blade closest to the spine. It quite often feels like a hot knife twisting in one spot. My doctor has basically prescribed painkillers to me advising that it could be sometime before the inflammation fades away.Since finding your videos about neck and shoulder pain my condition has improved drastically and I want to thank you!!! One thing I am still fighting with is sleeping. I cannot lay in bed no matter how many different position, pillows, etc. I try. As soon as I get in bed that spot in my shoulder starts aching and gets steadily worse until I have to get up. At this point I am sleeping on my couch as I am able to prop my shoulders up on a pillow against the arm of the couch. For some reason this position doesn't seem to trigger the shoulder pain. Is there anything I can do to get back to sleeping in bed??

    • @motivationaldoc

Get a yoga mat or a thicken carpet and try laying on the floor while sleeping. Preferably on your back if you can with the knees slightly bent. That may help your condition.

I find it interesting that people talk about "Oh I sleep in this position or that position" etc etc. I personally sleep in ALL positions. I move around numerous times during the night, usually starting in the coma position, then going to my side, then back, other side. I find it impossible to believe anyone is actually going to wake up in the same position they feel asleep in. So I think it's hard to try to sleep in a particular position, for me anyways. What I need is a pillow that is thin in the middle for when I"m asleep on my back (head is usually central on the pillow) and thick on the sides for when I'm asleep on my sides (my head is always to one side of the pillow when I'm on my side with my face kind of off the edge of the pillow). Anyone got any suggestions?

here's a genious idea: when you sleep on your side, do not use a pillow, just the pillow-case (for smootheness) and TILT YOUR HEAD DOWN + SIDEWAYS (result: diagonal displacement). voilà. You just discovered how to sleep like a wild animal! It's the basic fetal position.
It lets you stretch and relax your neck muscles, just like when you doze off on a chair, like when your cat/dog curls into a ball.
Also, you can use both of your nostrils, since the pillow is no longer covering up your lower one.
And you no longer have to wonder "where do I put my hands?", because now you can put them next to your face without being obstructed by a pillow.
I've been sleeping like this for the past 5 years. Life changer.

Well I stopped using a pillow today and I laid down on my back and at first it was very painful deep in my lower back . This I found really interesting because it is my shoulders , neck and scapula and ribs that’s are always in pain and cracking and tight but I’m guessing it must be from my back ?? I don’t know. But it has seemed to make it feel much better it’s given my back a good stretch and I was cracking in all sorts of places I haven’t in ages like leg and knee. However I am a very restless sleeper and I sleep on my side a lot too so this is going to be interesting . I have a painful neck hump and I’m always trying to fix it. The issue is so have a very big bust.

Neck pain can come from other things...not just how you sleep. Posture and past injuries could play a big role. If you’ve ever been in a car accident and didn’t have it treated...could cause lots of issues...even if it happened 20 yrs ago.

    • @motivationaldoc

Wedge pillow is good for sitting as long as the narrow side is going forward. As long as your head is in a neutral position with the rest your spine any pillow should be suffice.
