    I'm not calling this a "fluid flush" video because we lost half the stock to the driveway. Its a drain and fill... But it's fourteen steps in the right direction!
    The AW70 transmission is a 4 speed automatic used in most non-turbo Volvo models of the 80s and early 90s. The Turbo cars got the AW71. Shouldn't be too different a procedure. Just don't forget your drain plug 😉
    Volvo 240s are easy to work on, but they NEED work. That's the trouble with owning one in 2021. Otherwise you pay premium. She paid premium and we were still lied to about some of the things it needs, but we were prepared 🤠 🤙

      I bought mine 3 years ago February of 2018 bought it from a doctor who rented a warehouse across the street from where I worked he was selling it because he had seven cars and his daughter was going off to college and said she did not want the Volvo so you put it for sale and some guy from Texas was going to give him $4,000 and come to get it but it never materialized I bought it for 1,000 and I've already invested close to 5,000 maybe more I'm not really a mechanic not even a weekend mechanic but I've done some work on my cars and my diesel truck that was many years ago I wanted to do at least 50% of the work but I had a stroke in my eye and I also have some impediment when it comes together my thoughts but I'm not a quitter I'll figure out a way to get it the way I want it good luck with your Volvo.

    In my Volvo 240 with AW70 transmission, what I'm doing is, instead of a proper job as you did, I just add draining the ATF fluid to the regular maintenance once a year. I only put a couple of thousand miles per year so I believe at least I'm renewing 1/3 of fluid on yearly basis. Great videos as usual. I do the same with power steering fluid. Differential oil and coollant, I do every 3 years.

    Thanks you very much for the gasket tips, used the cable tie idea from the comments too and it worked really well. I realized the drain plug was stripped taking off the pan; and I went and got a used one which came with the dipstick tube attached. Had to disconnect the bar that the trans mount sits on and drop it down to do it. Definitely never want to do it again, getting the original dipstick tube off was an anxiety attack.

    Just thinking about the fluid being immediately changed in colour...Was watching some other Volvo folks do the transmission fluid change....they ran it twice, cost more, but, in the end it was clean, as all the old remaining stuff ran out...the new stuff took it, as they drained the first new batch....The second fill left it clear and clean, they used a bottle system to see it run clear. Your work is interesting to view, these cars brought back to operational standards speaks of the quality in the first place, yet they all have failures in their design. ...Where did you learn to do all this....is it class learning, or just not scared to pull stuff apart...

    Hey mate, I have an 89 240 wagon in Australia, and I have an overdrive issue.
    Firstly, I have already done the solenoid bypass by cutting a slot between the fluid ports and using only the outer o ring after. So I believe I have eliminated solenoid or relay being the issue.
    Now my OD does work, but only at 100km/h or higher, and ONLY when I floor the accelerator till you get the “click”. It will then drop from 3rd into 2nd gear, rev to 4000rpm and then when I release the accelerator it drops back to 3rd briefly and then into 4th/ overdrive.
    So it almost feels like the trans isn’t building enough pressure to activate the OD circuit, until I get to 4000rpm.
    Do you have any advice or suggestions here? Could dirty/low fluid cause this?
    Or a bad kickdown cable?
    Thanks!!

    David, I have done similar maintenance on my 1992. The oil is being constantly spat out from the breather tube at the top of the transmission. Frequently to the point where it would begin to slightly slip. The only way I was able to keep the oil in the transmission is by running a rubber hose from the breather tube along the dipstick tube all the way to its top. The oil I am using is Mobil One Synthetic ATF. Do you have any suggestions?

    • @alexeiivanov3667
      @alexeiivanov3667 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dudley7540 It is long deep-stick with the long deep-stick tube. I do have a cam swapped to IPD's VX and have it advanced by 5 degrees. This gives me a low-end torque and I am not sure if that contributes to the problem with AW70.

    Hey David or anyone that sees this, my project Volvo 240 isn't starting and it is baffling me. After using ether I found it isn't getting spark and the fuel pumps aren't working. The computer is still working because it sends codes to the diagnostic module (its lh 2.4) however it doesn't send out any error code. I don't think it's the crankshaft position sensor because the car was working perfectly fine before, and it hasn't seen any road use at all. I think it is my fault because I was mad one day and I was pulling on the aftermarket tach that the previous owner installed, but I have no clue what that would have to do with causing the fuel pump and spark to stop. I was wondering if you could tell me where you would look first in this situation.

    • @mreidsma3006
      @mreidsma3006 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That tach wire goes to your ignition coil. Make sure you didn’t short the signal side of the coil to ground when you monkeyed with the tachometer. That would get you no spark or fuel! It’s the red and white wire on the coil that goes to lug 1.

    • @surfinbird208
      @surfinbird208 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mreidsma3006 I was thinking a possibility would be the ignition coil since I was screwing with the tach and since there's no wire on one side. But the aftermarket tach wasn't even working and i don't even know if it was connected anymore. If I shorted the signal side (which im assuming is the negative side) then ill probably have to get a new coil right? Ill look more into what to do about testing a coil.

    • @mreidsma3006
      @mreidsma3006 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@surfinbird208 Disconnect the coil and use an ohmmeter to test it from tab 15 to 1, and then from 15 to the center and from 1 to the center. The specs should be in your repair manual or you should be able to Google them. It's rarely the coil, more often the wiring or CPS or fuel filter relay.

      Hi, the 240s were notorious for having defective fuel tank pre-pumps. A good way to check this is to make sure the tank is at least 3/4 full, preferably full. If it starts fine, it's because the full tank is providing enough pressure to the engine. If the engine doesn't start when the tank goes below half, it's probably the Pre-pump. I had to get mine changed after running it with no problems, then it stopped and didn't start until more gas was added. It took me a lot of time to figure this out. Hope this helps.
