    I'm not too sure about the check on both ends means firewood. I have been a cabinet maker for over 40 years and I have never had that problem. 7 years at a large commercial shop and then on my own for 35 years, I have processed hundreds and hundreds of board feet of lumber and I just don't see this as a problem. It may be this guys experience, but I have never seen it being a problem after the wood is machined. If this were the case, then solid raised panel doors would be extremely expensive because of having to wade through units of lumber to find no checking at both ends....
    Yes the twist is a real problem and that is what really makes that twisted piece firewood, not the checking.

    Tons of great information in this video!
    A few notes are needed,
    1. Looks like the joining the boards face grain was edited out. As he said planers don’t make wood straight.
    2. Rest time after glue up before machining, is a good thing to be mindful of.
    I’m sure keeping video short is vital to editing decisions. If you needed to shorten video it may be a good idea to have a wrap up process stating the overall steps, so new wood workers don’t skip something vital. Great video though!

    I noticed you didnt raise the grain with water before oiling etc. I'm a total newbie just watching to learn first - will be starting this sort of woodworking as a hobby when I retire in a few months. So just getting stuff all in line and collecting timber from wherever I can scrounge some.

    I was taught to cut to width then joint the bowed side as the planer will press down on the board and flatten it out as it is run through. I will spring back and be the correct thickness but the bow will not be removed. Run it on the jointer first then plane and you will get a straight piece of stock.

    Question about the feet. Why would you not drill the holes for the feet then treat it, then screw them on. Now your board is somewhat compromised at those points

    • @CraftsmansLegacy
      @CraftsmansLegacy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question Joe. The oil will still penetrate under the rubber footing so I don't feel there would be an issue of an unfinished surface. You could definitely apply them after though.

    Erm you didnt take any bow out with the jointer planer, you edged it, you then went straight into the thicknesser, that is not going to remove any uneven bowing unless you use a sled with packing shims

    • @CraftsmansLegacy
      @CraftsmansLegacy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Facing on the jointer was not shown, just talked about. We did remove the bow with the jointer before going to the thickness planer. Good catch though, it should have been in the video.

    There are two philosophies when it comes to woodworking…
    The American way: use only the best 1% of your wood and chase it a through a machine park worth thousands of dollars to give you ultra-precision!
    The traditional way (Japanese, English, French… Pick the one you want): Understand how wood moves and works in different environments and let it work your way…

    All perfectly ok woods to use to make an amazing cutting board. The concerns are unfounded. This is obviously not a cutting board guy. Use hardwoods, stay away from red oak, use tite bond 2-3 with instructions not to put it in the dishwasher makes it a multigenerational board. Never use 4/4 lumber use 8/4 lumber...

  • @MayorMcCheese2000
    @MayorMcCheese2000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    he lost me at not using teak... arguably Teak is the best wood anyone could use to make a cutting board. These aren't display pieces, they have a function and a purpose, and to that end I don't know of anything that outperforms Teak. The wood both wont abuse your knives, and can take a great deal of abuse from the knives, you won't find ebony in big slabs in woodcraft but there's plenty of ebony slabs out there but the wood is too hard and will chip from cutting and ruin blades faster. I only make cutting boards using Teak in the center and other woods only as banding where I don't expect anyone to make cuts. Toxicity is also a whole other thing, not all wood toxicity is the same and some of those beautiful colored woods are toxic as hell and should be nowhere near your food... Teak is just about the safest option as well as the best performing.

    • @CraftsmansLegacy
      @CraftsmansLegacy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All good info. Sandy's remark about using Teak was around the cost not performance. It's his opinion. Appreciate your comment and great information!

    • @MayorMcCheese2000
      @MayorMcCheese2000 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CraftsmansLegacy I totally get the cost argument, obviously I'm someone who personally just loves that wood in general. One of those things where you cry when you buy it but at the end of your project you never regret using it... not me at least. I really dug the color combinations in this video on some of those boards!

    "Flat boards is woodworking, anything else is carpentry." "You have to have the big 3s to do woodworking or else it is carpentry." That is so not true! I know so many professionals who work with wood in many different ways that would strongly disagree with this, it just isn't true! I could give you dozens of counter-examples, this is a horrible shortcut!
