But i have wanted a hamster for over a year now, and i have done so much research. I'm making diy's for my future hammy (if i'm going to get one) and i'm saving money for a large Cage. Wish me luck. Hi Erin, I have a question I'm afraid to ask. My hamster recently passed away and I have done a lot of toys out of popsicle sticks. The reason for her death was a rectal prolapse. In the region I live there are no exotic vets and I'm sad I couldn't save her. But I was wondering if these toys had something to do with her death. All my toys (including my other hamster's) had had and some still have tiny creatures crawling on them. I don't know if they are mites; they are orange and very very small. Everytime I spot one I kill it. I am only able to see them when they walk. They are orange and seem to "attack" my wooden toys (popsicle sticks) only. They do not damage them or eat them, but they're always there and I don't know if they are harmful bugs. My hamster lived that way 1 year and 10 months and my other one is living okay that way. But I'm wondering what they are and if they caused my hammy's death somehow as bugs can be dangerous for them. All the platforms I had for her and the ones I have for the other one are made of these materials as well. Also, they have never had itch or anything like that. My late hamster had a bald patch at the right of her butt but I think that was due to her age. She never had any problems before. I really want to know this because otherwise I will stop doing popsicle sticks toys and try to buy online since in my country there are no rodents supplies. Please, answer! I'm worried. The toys I have made are so cute and thanks to your tutorials I was able to; others were made up by me and I really prefer that over buying them but I have this huge struggle in me. Why are these bugs in the toys? What are they? Thanks in advance Erin I hope you reply!

    • @C.Woodford
      @C.Woodford 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would stop using the toys, disinfect the cage and get rid of any traces of the mites, same with the toys. See if they come back after disinfecting everything including the toys and if they do, do it again and maybe change the type of bedding? What are they on atm?

    • @Soveny1HaHaHammyx
      @Soveny1HaHaHammyx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@C.Woodford Oh! So I would have to make new ones? It would have to be frequently, I recently made a new see-saw and a mite already attacked it! Although I killed it when I realized :( This thursday I am cleaning the cage because my mom is coming to visit us. At the moment she is in kitchen tissue bedding because I live in a third world country and they only sell pine shavings, so I have to do the bedding. What I have seen is that she's okay with the mites but I'm scared they may harm her. She looks kind of "weird" but she has always looked like that even when I bought her (the reason I bought her is that she looked very sick to me and her skin seemed irritated, so i wanted to "save " her, but it turned out that she was pregnant and her skin is naturally irritated. Also, she seems to be a fighter because she had escaped 2 times from my cage, and since it is in the balcony, she fell like 3 or 4 meters. I never thought she would be able to escape because the cage is really big (2 meters long and 50 centimeters wide). I also find it strange that NOTHING happened to her, because that's a really high fall and it would have killed her... I took some precautions and she has never escaped since. Oh god I wrote too much. I'm sorry. But I don't know what to do with those mites! I'm entering university and I have no place to buy toys so everything she has I have done it myself and if the mites keep appearing I'll have to re-do every toy weekly :( I can't even bake them because they popsicle sticks toys and I don't know what to do. She's still very active as always. She has been one year and 4 months with me.

      @@Soveny1HaHaHammyx you could order some pet safe disinfectant of the internet or make your own, disinfect everything and I mean everything! Including the entire cage, bars (if you have them) toys, dish like literally everything. With the toys, disinfect them with the pet safe cleaner either bought or diy, and leave them somewhere warm to dry. Change all the bedding completely and maybe try another type of diy bedding just in case it's something to do with the material you use like if you make erins bedding then use another type of tissue. It will probably stress your ham out a bit but if it works then they will be a lot happier in the long run , hope this helps.

      @@Soveny1HaHaHammyx also how often do you change the bedding ad do you spot clean? As it could be something to do with the smells etc in the cage that are attracting the mites?
