.32 H&R Magnum VS .380 ACP (LCR VS LCP)

  • Both the .32 H&R Magnum and .380 ACP have on average similar bullet weights, velocity and energy from short barrels. How will they compare to each other with similar bullets being fired? The .380 ACP is a 90 gr XTP (loaded by Hornady) and the .32 H&R Magnum is an 85 gr XTP (loaded by Federal). Guns used are the Ruger LCP and Ruger LCR. Always appreciative of any channel help :)

    This test should confirm both of these cartridges are worthy of defensive duties. Great test Sam.

    Now that we’re getting into the summer months I’ll be carrying a 380 more often now. I never feel in anyway less adequately armed with a 380 and a extra mag. I’ve carried for years and have carried a variety of firearms. The older I get the less I’m likely to carry a 1911 or a Glock 19 daily. I’m not lazy, just seasoned. Thanks for the good video. Top notch info.

    My wife and I are both fans of the Ruger LCR in 32 mag...great trigger , great ballistics with very manageable recoil and fairly comfortable to CCW !! Bonus points for 6 rounds versus 5 on all the other chamberings as well. We can also shoot at least 3 other offerings through it and lessen the recoil even more for practice shooting or as ammo availability changes. As far as a snubby goes , I thing the Ruger LCR in 32 mag is about as good as it gets - thanks for sharing this vid !!

    Sam, Thank you for doing all the testing for us. Please test the Underwood .327 to your best damage and penetration round /caliber you have found for carrying(when the demand slows for ammo). The next weapon I will get will be a.327 LCR. The Ruger 101 is too heavy/bulky to backup (or primary)carry in my opinion.

    Our State finally was forced by a Federal judge to open up Gun Shops as well as outdoor ranges. That gave me a chance to shoot a variety of ammo out of my Stimulus ck purchase, a Ruger LCR X ..I've been holding off getting a LCR X based on deciding what caliber would be appropriate for an almost 70 year old man with arthritic hands. Last year I had bought a S&W 638 snubbie 38 spec and I could not hit the broad side of a barn with it. So I traded it in. I can't live with any gun I can't shoot well. So putting a variety of brands and size 32 SW long, HR 32 Mags, and and 327 Magnum, I could shoot all very well. Gun Sam has explained the felt recoil of the LCR very well. No recoil with the SW 32 long.... those Federal HR he just shot were almost as mild.... and the 327 mag reminded of of 38 spec +P out of my 4 inch Ruger SP101... You can actually rapid fire the LCR six rounds with those HR 32 loads and hit a grapefruit size group center mass because the gun stays on target. If you are still debating getting a LCR 327.... don't. It's the most versatile EDC and fits well into a Desantis Nemisis for pocket carry.

  • @63DW89A
    @63DW89A 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A major advantage to 32 H&R Mag vs .380 ACP is the ability of a revolver to fire any bullet shape without issue. For self-defense loads in 32 H&R Mag, full wadcutters in the 98 to 100 grain range may be just the ticket. An good alternative would be a WFN(Wide Flat Nose) bullet of about 80 to 90% caliber meplat for a bit better ballistic coefficient and easier speed loading capability. A Ruger SP 101 (6-shot, 3 inch barrel) in 327 Fed Mag may be an excellent selection, as that caliber would give a shooter the option of 32 Short, Long, H&R Mag and 327 Fed Mag in a strong gun that would handle any load thrown at it!

  • @aaronlarsen7447
    @aaronlarsen7447 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is where I pick the revoler. These calibers are in a very fair fight for a spot as a personal protection, everyday carry. It has less to do with ballistics for me, than a mountain of other factors. Revolver reliability, ability to keep it loaded, no spring magazine to wear out, safer, more intentional to fire, in a package that won't weigh you down. People shoot dimes and nickels, with revolvers. I'm thinking 17mag revolver might be awesome.

      I like the Hydrashok .327 Federal as I still get 250 ft lbs muzzle energy and good control with 6 rounds. I have Gold Dot .327 ammo but it's too much blast for me to feel confident in.

    • @toddwindbigler1983
      @toddwindbigler1983 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      .327 FM is very loud. Maybe more so out of my S&W 632-1 with top port. If you are going to carry .327, please shoot at least 1 without ear protection. And don't have your back to a building. That little round from a small revolver has serious 'crack' to it.

    • @toddwindbigler1983
      @toddwindbigler1983 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought all the Gold Dot 115g ammo I could when it was on sale (discontinued) at my local GS, years ago. Figured longer bullet>less powder, less blast. Also less speed but the .327fm is fast as is. A little more sectional density, and penetration, from a flat shooting, low recoil, 6 shot, J-frame.

    I found exactly one box of the federal 85g grain hi shok jhp in .32 h&r mag. They only had one box and they found it in a back room at guns galore in Fenton, MI lol. But the box looks really different than the one in this video. It's in an old gray striped box with navy blue. Haven't seen a federal box look like that in a long time. I looked up the date from the lock code and it was manufactured in 1999 lol. Oh well, the ammo looks ok and I have ammo for surplus rifles that is much much older than that and it still shoots fine.

  • @Tinman3187
    @Tinman3187 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It seems to me that Federals 32 h&r is a bit underpowered which is unfortunate due to how few ammo makers actually make the stuff. This cartridge could have been great if it wasn't for crappy h&r revolvers holding it back. Buffalo bore's 32 h&r is a good example of what can be achieved on the upper end and black hills is also a warm round but doesn't expand well due to the bullet .

    Don't under estimate .32ACP or .32 Magnum or .380ACP. A good pistol in any of these calibers with a good deadly round will do the job with good shot placement. A .32ACP with Underwood xtreme penetrator out of a Beretta Tomcat is a lethel combo. Great video and testing.

    I really wish they made a .32 mag in a NAA style pocket revolver with decent barrel length. The LCR in comparison is so bulky that it eliminates the reason for having a small revolver. If it hides even less well than a automatic then I don't understand why you'd go with less bullets. It's all about comfort though and not giving psychopaths a false sense of security. They're going to check your pockets and I don't think a snubnose fits comfortably anywhere else.

  • @CeltKnight
    @CeltKnight 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd marked this to watch and {forgive me} forgot! The shame! ... Anyway, just watched it and it's yet another cool and informative video. I've considered for some time having the cylinder of my S&W 30-1 (j-frame, 6 shot, .32 S&W Long) bored out (IIRC ~.155") to chamber .32 H&R Magnum. Better ammo selection and possibly (possibly ... maybe ... could be if the stars align juuuust right and I hold my mouth just so...) a bit more "umph" on impact. I even bought a spare cylinder thinking I'd have it matched to my 30-1 and rebored. Of course financially this has thus far proven to be, shall we say, unwise.
    I'm not terribly sure now I'd really gain enough to justify the expense. Now, a j-frame in .327 maybe ... maybe ... I do love me some .32s, dunno why, I just fancy the caliber. I'm determined one of my next gun purchases will be an airweight or airlight S&W J-frame. Now, it appears, I'll have more decisions to make as to caliber. I mean, whichever one I get I'll wish I'd gotten the other one, anyway, right? :)
    Great channel and as always, great information. Thanks!

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. Nothing wrong with an airlight but .38 Special is really the go to. I think all the .32 H&R J-frames are no longer produced, and if there ever was a .327 airlight they aren't being made either. I'd say now days the LCR is the best choice for .327 or .32 H&R. Of course there are the Charter .32 H&R's too.

I've thought about carrying the air-weight .38 with my LCP as back-up. The only thing dissuading me is the caliber incompatibility. Since I can't afford to buy another air-weight, I may go ahead with the LCP, seeing that it didn't perform too badly in this video.

    Interesting how similar these calibers are.
    Some hand loading hollow points note that they are not for expansion / self defense.

    • @GunSam

  • @Predalien195

    Hornady XTP's generally are some of the best expanding .380's even in short barrels. It just depends on who loads the XTP. I've found the Fiocchi Exterma loads get down pretty good in short barrels. Plenty of .380's will get expansion but often fail to meet FBI minimums. ShootingTheBull410 in his 380 Ammo Quest video series goes over these things quite well I'd say.
    One thing about .380 ACP is that people forget.. it was intended for use in 3.2 to 3.75 inch barrels. When the round was designed that was the average barrel length of such pistols. And so when they fail to get expansion they always forget that fact. Of the two I'd prefer the .32 H&R still. It's pretty well proven in short barrels and it's HP options most certainly do better. But also, unless your gun is .32 H&R only, if it's a .327 you can fire +P .32 H&R which will easily surpass the .380, but another factor to consider is the ability to use .32 S&W Long as well for both target use or defensive use.

    So it usually boils down to what ever bullet your can buy cheaper... A lot of times Ive noticed the 32 bullets are cheaper than the 380 bullets with the 380 often times being hard to find. Years ago it used to be the other way around so i think the 32 is making a big come around especially with new bullet technology. One of my favorite 32s for revolvers is 327 magnum.

    From what i have seen for several years, it seems like the XTP needs more velocity to get any real expansion. As an educated gueess i would say 1050-1100 fps at least. That said, it seems to be an excellent hunting bullet in 357, 41, and 44 Mag, and probably 10mm as well. As far as the 32, i think it is crying out for an 85 or 90 gr LSWCHP......

      Because I like to test similar energy cartridges. The .32 H&R and .380 are near identical energy. The .327 Mag is typically 350 to 450 ft lbs energy out of a snub as where .380 is sub 200 ft lbs usually. The .327 Mag in a snub is more of a competitor to a snub nose .357 mag or full size 9mm pistol.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the bullet. XTP and standard Gold Dot need a minimum of 9mm energy to expand. XTP and standard Gold Dot make excellent bullets when going to 500 ft lbs or so.

      My experience is that it matters more on the caliber than the bullet itself. HST is usually pretty good as well as short barrel Gold Dots. XTP's are not generally great for .38 Special, .380 ACP and some 9mm but in .45 ACP and .357 Magnum I have had good expansion with XTP's.

  • @dislocatedtexan
    @dislocatedtexan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Take this with a grain of salt. I dont think this test was completely accurate. NOT because of your method ive been enjoying your channel for a long time. I honestly think its those XTP projectiles. They have a harder jacket or something that keeps them from expanding well. Ive done a few crude tests myself with just denim and water jugs and the XTP projectiles i shot literally looked the same. What’s interesting is they were .38 specials out of a 686 3” barrel looked just like those rounds. I think this test deserves a different bullet. Just my experience with the XTP others could have different results

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was a specific test of XTP bullets. Generally when I do a VS video it's within a series. SO this one was XTP and I might do more in whatever ammo I can find in the two that's the same like Critical Defense, or maybe Buffalo Bore etc.

      There's always that trade off. An empty chamber LCP is always my go to for ultra concealment in a pocket, like if I'm around a bunch of people like our now outlawed family gatherings, can sit safely with no chance of negligent discharge. But the on the range, a revolver shoots easier than an LCP.

    So a 32H&R after it's 10% expansion is still below were a 380ACP starts off? Same penetration?
    This coupled with the easier to conceal smaller & lighter semi auto seems to make it a no brainer for the 380 vs. 32H&R for CCW, And I am a revolver fan myself.
    I don't even mention the speedier reloading as that really is a non factor in 99.9% of CCW defenses. For the .1% you probably would have been better of using your "people" skills first, vice needing a reload.

      This load of .32 H&R was not too impressive though. The hottest .380 I have tried gave me like 1,040 FPS 99 gr HST, if I remember right it was close to 240 ft lbs energy. Hottest .32 H&R Mag was the Buffalo Bore+P and I got something like 340 ft lbs energy. From what I have gathered from just about every "Gel" test (I know) the HST, while being very good in all other calibers was disappointing in 380, with the XTP bullets, and Federals older Hydra-Shock being superior.

    Generally I’m still a big fan of the XTP in loadings that produce the advertised expansion. Beautiful big flowers? Far from it. I prefer rounds that expand but deliver close to the high side of “acceptable” limits in calibrated material which XTPs generally do with their purposely reduced expanded profile. Not to scoff at a frontal shot with a grenade-like 110 SJHP 357 Mag but I’d prefer complete perforation in less than ideal shots. I carry the 180 grain bonded rangers in my P229R/40 and by all accounts they perform ideally for me. Plus I snagged a few cases for 40 cents a round - tested many, many magazines worth and carried with confidence.
