.32 H&R Magnum VS .380 ACP Critical Defense (LCR VS LCP)

  • Both the .32 H&R Magnum and .380 ACP have on average similar bullet weights, velocity and energy from short barrels. How will they compare to each other with similar bullets being fired? The .380 ACP is a 90 gr FTX bullet with a rated muzzle velocity of 1,000 FPS and the .32 H&R Magnum is an 80 gr FTX bullet with a rated muzzle velocity of 1,150 FPS. Guns used are the Ruger LCP and Ruger LCR. Always appreciative of any channel help :)

      @timmybmn My only problem is that now since I have done so many ballistic tests, that if I do something different a lot of people complain. My long time subscribers like Greg (lionquest) and Angelo (lead bullets for life) probably you as well seem to like the other oddball stuff, but these new subs will flat out tell me the videos I do other than ballistic testing are "terrible". So I end up repeating the same stuff.

      @@GunSam if I had the time and money I'd do a shotgun home defense ammo review. Fired at 7yds or less. Find the sweet spot for lethality but no overpenetration. Minimal wall penetration after going thru badguy. You're a revolver guy so maybe this isn't what you're looking for as far as "not repeating" yourself.

    I appreciate this review! I have carried a three-inch, six shot .32 Magnum revolver for thirty years, and never had to pull it, or even hint where I carried it. I think that it is something about the confident direct look on my face that repels evildoers? Critical Defense was only recently available for this caliber, and I ordered a BUNCH of it. Recoil is very mild, and quick follow-up shots are easy...........................elsullo

    I know this video is 2years old but I carry an LCP Custom (original LCP with factory “enhancements “) as my EDC. I highly highly recommend the Hogue grips specifically fitted for the original LCP. It pins to the pistol and the end piece of the grip is removed and incorporated into the new grip. It definitely tames the recoil of that snappy gun and makes the grip in general much more sure. 7 round mags help with the grip also. Thanks for your great videos.

      I carried that exact one for 6 years, but if you watch some gel tests with Tools & Targets this exact round usually doesn't open up. Plus sometimes in training the gun is so small your hand can have the slide malfunction. I switched to a j-frame and never looked back for pocket carry.

    The .380 round is, or was, available in several similar configurations that could be called "scalloped solid" rounds. Those would be interesting to see, and though they would require a custom run or a reloading bench, it's possible to construct .32 H&R ammo using a "cavitator" or "external hollow point" bullet. Lehigh is one source for them. There might be some patent issues involved, and those might have to be resolved before that style can gain any traction in the market.

    I have to say that you have shot the Ruger LCR 327 Federal Magnum revolver with much tighter groupings. I purchased this revolver for my wife based off your recommendation, and it shoots exceptionally well. I do use a slightly above the 6 o’clock hold to get center bullseye hits at 3-5 yards. Haven’t tried the 32 H&R Magnum rounds yet. I still have plenty of the Fiocchi 32 S&W Long 97 GRS FMJ rounds that make this pistol a dream to shot. While I love to see Jug or Not, I am also very interested to see which ammo handgun parings produce the best accuracy.

  • @patrickbolthouse7354

    Rules for TH-cam jug busters. 1- Fill the jugs to the top, that way the viewer can guess where the bullet is. That's a check for you. 2- Number the jug on 2 sides so we know where it was. 3-draw an arrow on the jug so we know in and out of the bullet. 4- don't count a full jug when you shoot in the handle area. The Jugger knot box takes care of number 2 through 4. That's why your the best jug buster on the Inner Web. And that's no bologna.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It's a cool little round as by itself the scaled size is basically a .38 Special and it's energy is also a .38 Special standard pressure. But like you said, it is a .380 of the revolver world as the bullet weight, velocity and energy are near the same which seems to make it perform similarly. But with 100% reliability and similar capacity of rounds. The only advantage the .380 ACP has over the .32 H&R is tiny slim pistols that can actually be ankle carried if need be. Or summer gym shorts etc.

    I have to say that the Ruger LCR chambered in 327 Magnum is just about the perfect concealed carry revolver. It carries SIX rounds in the same space as a higher-recoiling 38 Special that only holds five !! The ability to practice with soft shooting 32 S&W or up to 60 grain 32 H&R Mag rounds makes practicing pain-free !! Then being able to comfortably carry with 80 to 100 grain 32 H&R Mag JHP or full-power 327 Fed Mag is just awesome...especially since the performance of 32 H&R Mag is very respectable and 327 Fed Mag is pretty close to 9mm. Sometimes , ammo availability is a little tougher , but when it's available , just stock up !! I absolutely love the Ruger LCR in 327 mag chambering for its six rounds of ammo in a compact size , versatility in ammo choices and respectable terminal performance !!!

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For me, the .327 Federal has more felt recoil than .38 Special, however if you compare something like .38 Special+P 125 gr @ 900 FPS/225 ft lbs from a 2" snub, the felt recoil is about the same to me as a snub with 100 gr .327 Federal mid level loads, like 100 gr @ 1,200 FPS/320 ft lbs. Essentially, having less ammo to practice with is a moot point for me as practicing with a different revolver in .38+P gives me the same practice needed for shooting a mid range .327 Federal well. So for me, when people are like "ammo is hard to find" I refute that, as you don't need a lot of .327 Federal if you have a comparable gun that shoots .38+P.

      Thanks for watching. Interesting thing was I tested the 100 gr Buffalo Bore .327 Mag and the 100 gr Buffalo Bore .32 H&R Mag+P in the LCR and both got near identical performance. I think the .32 H&R was like 1,238 FPS and the .327 was something like 1,250 FPS. Both had stuck cases and both had similar recoil. I reloaded a few .32 H&R Mag with 85 gr XTP's and found 3.7 gr of Titegroup made a great snub load, something like 975 FPS.

    Yet another cleanly executed comparison! I just sold my .327 LCR snubby - Alread kind of kicking myself for doing it, even tho I'd already replaced it with a single stack (Kahr Cm9) & double stack (Taurus G2c) 9mm that cover ccw & the night stand gun - Put weapon lights on them, & are cheaper to practice with.. I do all my research on the Tube & I wanted a fool-proof (revolver) first ccw - But even being a concealable size, the slimmer pistols didn't take long to catch my interest over the lcr. I don't have my own place so I don't want to start a collection just yet, & the main reason I sold it is I didn't research the ammo before buying the revolver, which I quickly learned was not locally available & kind of expensive for the good stuff at least. A very cool family of cartridges for sure, just didn't really fit into what I want/need atm. However, a revolver in .22 lr looks like fun! If I can find a Taurus 942 (3", 8rnd) that would be an affordable plinker/training tool! Oh & after I sold the LCR & Kel Tec p32, I bought an LCP in FDE(brown) to replace them both.Thanks if you read all this!

    I went through just about every 380 pistol my State allows... and hated how poorly I shot them... then I found the S&W Performance CTR 380 EZ..at 17 onces and a almost 4"barrel and improved trigger and sights it's possible many 380acp brands will be traveling faster then the smaller Ruger LCP.... I can shoot nice tight groups very fast... I've only taken my new Ruger LCR X out once and shot everything thru it..32 long, 32 HR Mag, and 327 mags ... a real sweet firearm that I can shoot well. What I do fear now is the 32-327 will be hard to find ammo in the near future. What was available a month ago is no longer. But one can still get 380acp. You shoot that Ruger LCP very well, for you it's a great choice, as it must be so easy to conceal.

      Thanks. Yes it's disappears on my 250 lbs body easily lol. I don't worry about ammo too much, but it seems .32 Long is about the most available ammo. Hand loading isn't too difficult with a little practice and .312" bullets seem to be just as available as anything else, so I know I can shoot when I want to. I see the American Eagle .327 Mag ammo online a lot, and the 85 gr is a decent target load for an LCR as the recoil isn't too bad. Funny thing is I have tested a lot of .380 round in this pistol since I got it over 2 years ago, but I rarely shoot it so I still have a ton of .380 ACP ammo for it, all being hollow points.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      .380 ACP+p is not an actual cartridge according to any ammunition authority like SAAMI or CIP, that's why none are rated for it. Seeing as .32 H&R is typically 150 ft lbs energy at the same pressure as .380, and seeing that non SAAMI .32 H&R+p is double the energy of standard pressure, I would take a guess and say .380 could be pretty close to that. Not quite as high in power as the .32 H&R because case capacity is smaller, but probably close.

I basically only use it if my main piece runs out of ammo or for some reason gets taken out of the action or my strong arm is disabled by a bullet or knife. The .38 gold dot isnt the #1 performer but I mostly just want my LCR as a back up at breathing distance and pretty much anything at those ranges can get the job done. But that fat gold dot mushroom is gonna take out a bigger chunk. My main carry is a Walther CCP loaded with the 115 grain hornaday critical defense.

    I was disturbed by the jacket separation from the core in both rounds, so I have a whacky proposition: You may have noticed that the liquid forms of "super-glues" (not gels) are very penetrating? How about a few small dabs of super-glue around the brass case mouth where it meets the lead to see if it penetrates the join? And then repeat this test? I hate the idea that I need to only use bonded ammunition! Maybe we can bond these ourselves instead?..............................elsullo

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's best to use a bonded bullet. Gold Dot short barrel is Speer's equivalent to Critical Defense, so i'd say use that if possible. The only legitimate way to bond a bullet like this would be to put some sort of crimp on the bullet itself, this is how Critical Duty and HST are "bonded" and the Gold Dot is more of a plating of copper to make a bonded "jacket".

      I haven't tested many .32 H&R Magnum rounds, but the only time I got what i'd consider good performance was with Buffalo Bore .32 H&R Mag+P with the 100 gr XTP. However, the velocity was basically identical to the .327 Magnum version so I can't say that's really a .32 H&R round. The Federal personal defense round uses an 85 gr XTP and i'd say that was decent. Only slight expansion, or I might call it deformation instead, but it penetrated to the same as 9mm, .38 Special, .357 Mag etc, but had only .344" "expansion".

You can't just edit the material, it would have to be redone and uploaded again as a new video. Seeing as I have changed my testing protocol completely and even tested this ammo again in a better test, it doesn't make sense to take your criticism or advice.

      BTW, I said that the .380 ACP had not a lot of recoil. Then I said that the .32 H&R Mag had a little less recoil from that revolver than the .380 ACP from the LCP. THEN I said that the cartridge itself the .380 ACP had/has less felt recoil BUT in a pistol that is small like the LCP, it's just a little more than the recoil of the .32 H&R Magnum in general because the revolver is a lot heavier to soak it up. If you don't understand this at this point, stop trying as it's going over your head.

      The thing with that is Critical Duty is only in a few calibers as where Critical Defense is in many. There's no .32 H&R or .380 ACP Critical Duty for instance. With the testing that I have done though, i'd say where there are calibers that overlap in both the Duty and Defense, the Duty seem to have performed better.

    Everything I have seen makes me conclude that JHPs are not a good idea unless you can get med heavy bullets running over 1Kfps. Better to use a flat point of some type.
    32H&R deserves more respect than it gets but I have seen a lot of poor penetration from Critical Defense and similar rounds in many calibers.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think actual velocity can sometimes be relatively slow and still get expansion, but only if the diameter and energy levels are high enough. Example would be a .38 Special at 800 FPS would not expand, but a .45 ACP at that velocity will expand as the hollow cavity and energy of a .45 ACP will overcome it's lack of velocity. Also you can get good expansion at low caliber and low energy but only if the bullet is designed right such as a semi jacketed hollow point in even standard pressure .38 Special from a snub will expand. But what I have seen in lets say ".35 caliber" 9mm/.38 SPL/.380 etc, is that you typically need to hit 900 FPS to get expansion, whether that bullet is 90 gr, 115 gr, 147 gr or even 158 gr. At .35 caliber 900 FPS seems to be the key number with ordinary average hollow points like Gold Dot or XTP. Once you go to .32 caliber though, that 900 FPS needs to become 1,000 FPS to insure expansion.

    • @mkshffr4936
      @mkshffr4936 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GunSam Quite right however penetration often suffers if there is not enough momentum due to the lower velocity or light bullets. Failure to expand can sometimes be an advantage. :)

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mkshffr4936 158 gr will often penetrate through soft material better than 90 gr for sure, even if the energy is the same. But then the hard barrier penetration can sometimes be lower with 158 gr if lets say the 158 gr is at 750 FPS (197 ft lbs) vs 90 gr at 994 FPS (197 ft lbs). However, I have also tested hard barrier penetration at old pots and pans at 25 yards, and even though the lighter faster round penetrates better up close, at 25 yards often the heavier bullet penetrates better than the lighter as the momentum of a heavy slug will keep that energy out further. This is why handgun ballistics is fun as the stuff people often forget to think about, and you prove the opposite of common thought is fun.
