    Which was your favorite type of tone control in this video?
    *Bluesbreaker style tone control
    *Big Muff style (types 1 and 2)
    *Tube screamer style

    • @kampfkustomer2343
      @kampfkustomer2343 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They all had a good quality to them tbh, the muff 1 and 2 seemed the biggest/ballsiest. The BB had a nice 'Marshall' thing going on too.

      I love these kinds of videos!
      My favorite is probably the Big Muff 1 & 2, but of course depends on what I'd be using it for.
      Zero boredom here. Looking forward to your new mod book, when it comes out.

      I like the tube screamer tone control but I think that's mainly just because I like tube screamers. I don't know that my ear is refined enough to fully grasp the distinction of the different tone controls... As an end user I really just tend to go with what sounds good to my ear lol

      I really liked the first and second variation of the Big Muff tone control.

    Thanks for this video. I’ve been helping my daughter with her major school project, making a dual boost/drive pedal, which has allowed me to gain some insight into effects circuits. I’m hooked, and your videos have really helped. What I’d really like to know is different ways to wire up 3PDT switches, to have each channel truly independent (for her pedal one runs into the other), how to make quiet circuits and how to achieve true bypass. We’re working on a breadboard test bed similar to yours! Thanks from the UK

    If this is the new content you are working on, this is the channel ive been looking for 15 years.(yeah before youtube).
    In 2005 I remember trying to do an overdrive from this spanish website that had some tips for creating your own tubescreamer and I was hooked but I wanted to know the ins and outs of the circuit. This is gold for people that want to go beyond the simple knowledge

    All pedals videos guys should nerd out more. I’ve learned so much watching videos

  • @trevordeke
    @trevordeke 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    My only complaint is that these videos are not nerdy enough! There is so much misinformation out there and it is really, really, REALLY great to see the truth.
    If you wanted to do a series of short videos on the individual parts of the circuit, I'd be absolutely ecstatic.
    Questions I can't find the answers to, but probably have simple answers:
    1) what is all that stuff in the power supply part of the circuit?
    2) what is the difference between an inverting/non-inverting circuit (other than phase)?
    3) why does everyone else sound awesome when they use a Rat, but when I use on the tone control is either way too bright or way too dark, with no happy medium? Is it because the slope of low pass filter is too extreme? Is there a way to mod it so it sounds more like the Bluesbreaker tone circuit?
    Thanks Brian. You are the best.

    It just blows me away how good you make a bread board circuit sound, but I live the vids, very informative and it is not boring mainly because you dont go too deep and you keep it short and to the point, one another note, i would like.to hear the third circuit with a slight mid boost, maybe you could make your bread board schematics available to us to be able.to experiment with and offer you a different take along the same subjects then feature one or two of them on the next video, I am gonna get me a couple bread boards and try to do this kind of stuff, I really want to know.more about how they work what values to use for different circuits, please.dont stop doing this I'm starting to look forward to it lol 😁

    I wish you would have shown the different tone controls on your own line of pedals. Very informative vid, but being a fan of your pedals it would be cool to know which one I'm thinking of picking up next. Sometimes, the pressure of testing a pedal in a guitar store can sometimes be distracting. The worst is passing up on a better pedal (like Wampler) just b/c you happen to tweak a pedal setting just the right way. Knowing the tone controls on your line would make it easier to get more adventurous and see what that little box can really do.
    Great and informative vid, though. I'd love to see more like this.

    How hard would it be to have an overdrive with a 3 position toggle switch and three tone controls labeled 1,2,3, so that all three of these types of tone control could be in one pedal?

    • @i_have_crippling._.depress4630
      @i_have_crippling._.depress4630 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's not hard to do it for the sake of just doing it, but you're gonna end up with a lot of extra components. The hard part is to optimize the design so you don't waste a lot in extra components and so you make the design profitable

    Got your book last year and its great, fyi I took it to my UPS store had the spine cut/trimmed off and punched for a three ring binder ($5, my FedEx will do the same w/ ring back for the same price.) so it lays flat on the bench on the pages I want to refer to. I've done the same with analog Mike's book and several others on amp construction and basics. Ruins whatever collector valve there is but makes using the books in the shop much easier.

    Absolutely love these videos. I’d put it like this: over the past several years my daughter dreaded science classes in school. I’d tell her “hey, science is great...you just need the right teacher.” She came home after the second week of middle school this year and said “oh my god, I really like chemistry...my teacher...she’s awesome!” That’s you, Brian. You’re really exceptional at communicating and teaching technical information and concepts to a broad and diverse audience. I really appreciate your willingness to take the time to do these “clinics.” Have a great weekend. Cheers!

    Thanks so much for taking the time to make these videos! My sons and I (13,14, 15years old) started building pedals in 2018 just for ourselves. A lot of that initial inspiration came from watching your channel and your videos. Now we are getting the hang of things and relying more on schematics than build instructions. As most parents are aware, sometimes kids learn best from someone other than a parent, and for aspiring pedal builders there's not much for them to glean outside what I show them. We are building two fuzz pedals this weekend and I'm going to dangle this video in front of them - and they'll bite!! You've helped me out a bunch and I just wanted you to know. Thanks, man!

  • @PatrickLewis88
    @PatrickLewis88 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am officially a student at Wampler University! Been learning to build pedals just bought 3 breadboards. My first schematic was the little brother of the big muff "Muff Fuzz"! Now I'm on to the big muff. The "big muff" tone control is quite clever. After a few more schematics I plan to build my own overdrive. Would have not been possible without these videos! Thanks again!

    Question: The Tunmus Deluxe has a wicked mids control that makes it really useful for changing your overall tone. Why do so few overdrives/distortions feature "Mids" controls? Is it tough to get right?

    • @DefconMaster
      @DefconMaster 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I'm hardly an expert, but it mostly seems to be a matter of added complexity. It's easy to add a high pass filter or a low pass filter with just a capacitor and a potentiometer to roll off frequencies above or below a certain point. Mid controls require the designer to control the frequencies within a certain range, which is more complicated and requires more components. For a simple overdrive or distortion, a mid control can add as many components as the rest of the circuit combined.

    Well I too like the nerdy videos. I'm going on 46 years old this year so I spent a lot of time as a guitar student not understanding pedals and stuff like that.. so I listen to these videos passively. I'm a big ol' geek. I love this kind of thing. If I'm honest I probably only understand about 50% of it, I wish I knew more, but I have built one DIY kit pedal, and just did my first pedal mod the other day. So I am learning, slowly. I studied mechanical and electrical engineering many years ago, but I struggled with the electronic side of it, and I was too young and daft, and easily distracted, so I dropped out after the first year, d'oh. I'm tempted to maybe try night classes or something, to see if I can get into it, now that I'm a bit older and wiser. So, yea, I'm up for more uploads like this. Cheers.

For too long I've been the victim of "modded pedals", from friends who thought they were doing me a favor, only to find that I had a problem on my hands that I needed to solve. Right now, it's a germanium transistor boost/fuzz, that's basically two in one, and needs some serious help. The friend who built it for me (who I paid $300 to do so), has no idea how or what he did to build it, so I'm entirely on my own if I want a useable $300 pedal. It's crazy, I know, but it's a good excuse to learn. Cheers, and thanks for the great content.

    Hi Brian, First of all thanks for all the work, and sharing your knowledge and intellect via here. My humble opinion, if anyone gets bored or feel not-so-entertained, they can go ahead and fast forward the videos. The whole concept of appealing to the mainstream, has been lowering the standards in terms of standards, on everything. you'll still have enough hits/views etc -if you care at all- on your vids, appreciated by people who have more than 30 second span of attention. Thank you, best regards.

    I truly appreciate the knowledge you share...In the late 70s, I took electronics classes in high school...Yes , we worked on tube tv's of the day...I always wanted to build a drive pedal early on....At the time , just didn't have the resources...I learn more on your videos...Again, thank you much!

    I just got my copy of How to Modify Guitar Pedals. It was $69 on amazon. Pretty expensive but the knowledge I expect to gain will be worth at least hundreds of dollars in pedals I will no longer need to buy. Thanks for all this, Brian!

    NERDS!!! Would be cool to rework that midboost Muff circuit into a passive tele tone control. Until then, at least we have EMG’s SPC control.
