    Just thought I would add, the honda repair manual states that before putting the gasket in the grove, you should apply a dab of gasket sealant to the cover at the four spots where the gasket bends at each side of the cam shaft semi circles. And like he said, do not use silicone.

      Let me correct what I said. .. Apply the sealant on the gasket AFTER placing the gasket on the cover.

    Just needed some quick assurance, as I’ve done this only once another time and also in the mechanic shops at one point as an apprentice. Mine went out and I already had the parts, gonna be doing this in a public apartment parking spot so it’ll be nice and done quickly. Have all of the tools to do it and gasket paste hehe thanks

    Just did mine...all when well except I found a few things...my car had 218k and this had never been done. I pried the spark plug seal out with a screw driver...it was easy! i put silicon paste on the new ones and just pushed them in with my hands...easy. the only issue I had was the bolt gaskets...I tried what another said to do...I put the grease on the ends and hit it with a hammer and tore some of the insides out. So dont use that method. and the torq spec is 86 Inch pounds on the cover bolts :)

    • @iamasmurf1122
      @iamasmurf1122 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No they are not these covers do not have torque settings as you do not torque then down those are stops that prevent the bolts from being bolted down ; you tighten the bolts up until you feel they are firm ; also you can smack those down With a hammer by putting a socket over them put you tap it gently until they push on

  • @Ottonic6
    @Ottonic6 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I haven't done the job yet, but it seems that these spark plug seals can be a bit of a problem. I am just going to see how the old ones are put in and compare them to the new ones to make sure they are the right way, assuming like Dan said, the old one were installed correctly. Would it hurt by putting a thin coat of oil on the seals to help from binding up on the cover? This shouldn't be that tough. Right? I will definitely get back after I do mine. I'm in no rush because the guy said I just have a small "seepage" and at some time it will need to be addressed, so I'd rather do it sooner than later. Thanks everyone for the info.

    You did in fact install the spark plug tube seals the wrong way. I did it that way my first time and the tubes filled up with oil. Rounded side of seal faces up when putting them in. When you bolt the cover back on, the side of the seal with the groove should be facing up and the rounded side should be facing down towards your valves.

    Question 1: what would be the most common reason why one of the tubes attached to the spark plug wire has a rusty looking texture.
    question 2: what is the most common reason why the spark plug wire boot isn't 100% flush when inserted back in

    4:38 of video I found a better way and easier to install grommet on bolt. Start screwing into it and when it gets stuck use a socket that fits over it onto the metal backing. I used a socket I remove lug nuts with. I put cardboard on top of my cement floor then with the socket I banged the bolt head on the cardboard a few times and it popped on. I did it on all three with no damage and it was less then 4 times banging it downward.

    I've gotta pretty decent oil leak from my lx will replacing the valve cover along with spark plug seals resolve most of this leak? I have gotten my gasket replaced so that's new.

    • @DantheFixitMan
      @DantheFixitMan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Frankie,
      It depends where your leak is coming from. Finding an oil leak can be a little tricky, but if you clean the engine really well first then run it around 2000 rpms for a few minutes you should be able to find it. You might also want to raise the vehicle and check underneath for leaks around the oil pan, or drain plug. Sometimes the oil filter can be the culprit if it's not installed correctly as well.
      Best of luck to you,
      Take care,

    • @paulsmallriver6066

      If it is burning that much oil then you have a problem requiring engine work. Valve cover gasket has nothing to do with the engine burning oil.

      Hi David,
      No, sorry about that. I can't edit out the music on this old video. It was made with TH-cam video editor, (no longer available). I don't have any music playing during my videos now, and I use a different editing software. The TH-cam Studio editor volume levels were sometimes way off... when I made this video, it didn't even sound like the music was noticeable. Lots of people have asked this same question on here, but sorry, I can't change it.

    • @DantheFixitMan
      @DantheFixitMan  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to get back to you so late on this. You may have already got this fixed, but if not, I would drive with the broken bolt, as needed until you can take the valve cover back off when you have time to replace the broken bolt. Just keep some oil handy to keep it full.
      Hopefully it didn't break off too far into the head that you can't easily back it out with some Vice Grips once you have the valve cover off. Sorry to hear that happened, but hope you were able to get it fixed without too much trouble.
      Take care,

    • @DantheFixitMan
      @DantheFixitMan  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      See Chris's comment above, you just have to take your time as you push the valve cover back on. Also, someone mentioned that I might have installed them upside down. I just tried to put them in the way that they were previously installed, (which may have been wrong), but they still went in ok and worked fine. Just make sure to go slowly and watch inside each tube to get them lined up before pushing down or tightening the valve cover bolts. Good luck to you.

      Yes, thank you for pointing that out. I read later that I should have added that to the key locations on the corners of the head and/or valve cover gasket before putting the new gasket back in. I took it off and added FIPG formed in place gasket material and it worked great. Thanks for watching!

    I know this video is pretty old. But I am replacing the spark plug gaskets on an accord that most likely had the factory gaskets in there. The old gaskets shred to pieces when trying to get them out and the metal ring on the old gaskets seems to be stuck (melted on) in place on the valve cover so the new gaskets will not fit. Is there any good way to potentially un-bond these gaskets? I have gotten most the rubber off but not the factory metal ring part of the gasket.

    • @DantheFixitMan
      @DantheFixitMan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Cody,
      A lot of times the spark plug tube seals will be stuck in the valve cover, but you should be able to get them out (including the metal ring) with a seal puller, or sometimes I just pry a small screwdriver carefully in there. I imagine a little heat wouldn't hurt either.
      Best of luck to you getting them out.

    I have a 98 Honda Accord and get past the spark plug tube to change the spark plugs, can you show or tell?

    • @DantheFixitMan
      @DantheFixitMan  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's fairly easy to change the spark plugs if that's what you are asking. You will just need a spark plug socket with the rubber inside to grip the plug. I don't have that vehicle here, but the next time I am working on it, I will try to make that video. There's a couple of videos here on TH-cam showing a 4 cyl and v6 hobda accord spark plug change. You will also need a socket extension. Good luck!

      first make sure you install them correctly on your valve cover, than lay the valve cover on the head and look at how the seals sit against the tubes, most likely you will need to use a couple of flat screwdrivers to get the seal to go around the pipe
