It is important to watch the spark plug tube seals when installing the valve cover. If you cannot see the top of the spark plug tube all the way around then the seal is out of place. Gently lift the cover, recenter and wiggle the cover as you press down and the seal will go over the tube properly. I had two out of place and both tubes filled with oil.....thank you Sir for the video!
Thank you so much, I just performed this service on my Civic and you made it so easy, $17 for the gasket kit and an hour worth of work saved me a ton of money, thanks again!
Best repair video I've seen in a while, thanks! Sometimes, u might have to stop and explain something but do folk will be talking way more than working and fumbling around and this same video would be over 20 minutes so thanks for getting right to it but at the same time showing up close every single little step, great job
Great video. Super helpful. I had 3 of 4 tube seals Leaking causing misfires. This is the deepest I've gone in fixing my own car. Together we saved me a bunch of money!! Thanks a lot.
I had trouble getting new valve cover bolt gaskets/seals on the bolts (tore through 2 of them). I ended up boiling water in a mug, then dropping the seals in the hot water for a little bit of time to make them more pliable. Then I applied a little dish soap on the center. I put the bolt head in a vice so that the thread end was up and applied pressure to the gasket/seal, mostly to one side of the gasket/seal, to force it on at an angle and it was successful. - just offering another method if you can't get them on as easily as shown in the video.
I'm considering on trying this myself as I bought an 01 manual and is said that's all it needs done. Thanks for the information, you broke it down well for someone like me who has no experience on cars
Great video! Well explained and to the point with no distractions or getting off the subject like other ones. Very straight forward and quick as well. Thank you!
hardest part was trying to remove the spark plug seals. if they are dry rotted the easiest way to remove it is to use a screwdriver to lightly CHISEL it out. BUT NOT from the bottom backside you have to do it from the TOP side looking down
Thanks Sir!! well communicated and illustrated video!! Also, the supplies and tools used was most helpful as well. Thanks for sharing. Keep Up the Great Work!!
I put mine recently and it doesn't leak from the front but its leaking bad from the back and I cant see if its because I torqued it wrong or the gasket is not in place, do you suggest i take it off and try again?
Excellent video but not as easy as it appears in this video. I had trouble with a couple of things. First, were the washers on the bolts that hold down the valve cover. You're supposed to be able to pry out the rubber washer and take a side cutter nippers and clip off the the washer and then the washer will slide right off. NO WAY! I had to use tin snips and two pair of pliers to pry the washer off of the bolts. My second problem was with the spark plug seal gaskets. Mine where Hard Rock. They did not want to come out. Actually, I was a little worried because when I tried the method of using a screwdriver that you jam down in there and then pry it up, and it looked like I had bent some metal. Chalk it up to a novice. There is no ridge of metal that the gasket seals sit in. So keep that in mind and don't freak out like I did. Plan at least 4 hours for the job. Hopefully, you will not have the problems that I had and you can do it in far less time. Other than that this was an excellent video. Even better than 1A Auto's video on this job.
I replaced the gasket, torqued the bolts, put RTV on the round corners but it still leaks, small amounts but coats the engine, new gasket, do you recommend RTV around the entire area since it still leaks?
DO NOT put the wiring harness on before you install and tighten the valve cover bolts. You don't want anything that can pull the cover out of position before the bolts are tightened.
The first two acorn nuts on this cover snapped right off as I was unscrewing it. I was trying to go slow on the second one too. This looked so simple to do. Now the nuts flew who knows where. Will this be a problem in the long run?
wow, it seem pretty easy. I think I can do that myself. I kind of have all the tools. Only if I can find the valve cover kit I may be able to do it... outside.... in the cold... with no mirror xD
I went to take my tube seals out and they are completely rotted. It just broke into a few pieces. There is still rubber in the top rim in the grove and the entire circle in the middle along the walls. Any suggestions on how to remove? Tried using flathead and hammer even a box cutter blade to remove from the grove at least and nothing.
Mine were the same way. I tried cutting, tearing, scrapping but in the end I did exactly what he said and used a small flat head screw driver tapped it down with a hammer and pried them right out.
links for parts and tools are in the description

Thanks man, think I might have to do this with my daughter's car, the smell of oil when she's driving hard to pass etc.

It’s interesting, in 2025 the same gasket kid is 40, maybe you got a different one
One of the best DIY vids on the subject - no unnecessary talking, no unnecessary video, no unnecessary ugly face closeups.
Thanks Brian!

Spot on and very descriptive on every step
Great video. Is it basically the same for an 08? And do you need to let the silicone dry? Or can you drive right off?
Thanks Sir!! well communicated and illustrated video!! Also, the supplies and tools used was most helpful as well. Thanks for sharing. Keep Up the Great Work!!
Great video my good sir, made it a breeze job to do. Just subscribed. Thank you so much for posting.
Glad the video helped. Thank you for subscribing and watching!

Other than that this was an excellent video. Even better than 1A Auto's video on this job.
it always takes longer than the videos
4 hours? I can do a complete timing job in under 4 hours....
I had to take off the airbox too. The bracket that holds up the airbox hangs over the valve cover.
Great explanation
how deep are the spark plugs. I wanna know if my tool is good enough for this job cause I also have to change them all
wow was that motor clean! maintenance here no 7 k oil changes I use a little weather strip glue if the gasket doesn't fit snug
hi thanks for this video and i have question what's the benefits of the silicone
rashed alzahrani it’s only use in the corner to fill in the gap‘s that the gasket will not cover.
I replaced the gasket, torqued the bolts, put RTV on the round corners but it still leaks, small amounts but coats the engine, new gasket, do you recommend RTV around the entire area since it still leaks?
Is the silicone a priority or can I fix the gasket without with silicone? I don’t want to have the fix another oil leak if that the problem

Just in the corners of the arch where it goes over the cam...
Good
Steaven tuang thank you!
Just did that exact job on the same exact same car a couple of week ago.
Nice overall it’s a pretty easy job👍🏻 thank you for watching!
@@HowtoAutomotive It is, just have to watch the tube seals from rolling, other than that easy peasy.
Ok second cylinder coolant xF
You MESSED UP, buddy, you SKIPPED showing how you carefully press in the GASKET into the groove of the valve cover. THUMBS DOWN!!!
Where did u get the gasket…
Excellent
