    A couple things I didn't mention in the video:
    (1) It might look like Mabel has diarrhea, but this is actually the normal poop consistency for a cow- they are always "loose". She likely pooped more than normal that day because she was a little annoyed and impatient. ;)
    (2) We are hoping to start selling milk locally, which is why we are super-picky about keeping things clean. We are currently getting our milk tested and working making sure the bacteria counts are low, which is important if we plan to sell milk to the public.

    • @ka6148
      @ka6148 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you are serious about selling your milk you may want to milk with the machine on top of the calves daily if there are adjustments in the schedule the bacteria count changes

    Ok.....my cow gets extra grain tonight. I hand milk my gal and I am so dang slow. Its her first year and mine. We are still learning. We don't even have to confine her though. She just stands there and lets me milk. If she has to poop she will just walk away to poop. then comes back and stands there sweet as can be. I thought she was naughty for hitting me with her tail and licking my back constantly......Mable just convinced me that my cow is an absolute angel.

      @erin m Milk cows should be milked daily and at the same time every day.

    • @notapplicable430
      @notapplicable430 3 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      @erin m Not sure if mine is a "good" routine lol. But routine is simply that...routine. Same time each day (very important), use the same procedures, same movements, same voice patterns...then lather, rinse, repeat. My cow knows exactly what is going to happen. She comes in sleepy eyed, relaxed. She poops while waiting for me to let her in, she pees immediately after being let out. Very rare for her to mess up the stanchion. I know exactly when she is going to let down her milk:-) It happens at a certain stage in cleaning her udder. This one little procedure causes a massive letdown. If I don't get it right ha! less cream for me!
      The results of a good routine is delicious, clean milk with a consistent cream line. And the milk will keep in the fridge for several weeks with very little quality loss.
      But, to be honest, milking a cow is a commitment not many folks actually have time for. And it took me years to figure some of this out. Thank you for inquiring. I hope this helps.

    • @dag118
      @dag118 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Very important they are milked at same time everyday. Skipping milking and switching babies on and off is not a routine. To put it in a way you might relate, let's say when you were nursing your babies, some days you just had your baby nurse and other days someone put the " milk pump " on you. Your body would not know how to react. Even with daylight savings time, you still milk at the time they were used to. Animals come before soccer games. They are a huge responsibility.

    • @mybusylife2158
      @mybusylife2158 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can support that. Basically any milking animal, be it cows or goats (not sure about camels though) enjoy the routine. Same time every day, same procedure, same order, same stand (if you have multiple). Be sure you have your stuff prepared but out of cow reach.

    This is the very best change I have made over the years in my milking routine. I get a large plastic tub, fill it with straw and ALWAYS keep it at the back of the cow when in her stanchion. Invariably one will pee or poop when I least expect it, and this way it always goes in the tub and does not splash because of the loose straw in the tub.

    As someone who milks on a fully robotic dairy. I love your setup it’s clean and I imagine once you setup milking everyday will be efficient for 4 cows. The poop is because you are stressing them out. Cows hate jets of water and you kept making it worse by spraying into her instead of away. And loose poop is normal with stress so I don’t see any issue with that

That adds a lot of stress and increases the chances of mastitis and increase SCC's. The CMT it's accurate at all. Visual inspection is more accurate than anything. But the cost of your operation is insane 😱

    I grew up on a grade B dairy, we had 86 of these gals. Jersey's too. Anyway, if you'd milk them at the same time every day, or twice a day preferably, let the kids bottle feed the calves . That give the kids a regular job, and puts your milkers on a schedule. No problem getting them to come in, they know they'll get relief so they're itching to be milked. I'd just step outside the barn and whistle, all 86 cows , who were already there, would come running. It the inconsistent milking times they don't appreciate. I was in the military and broke some bones in a fall, when I was x-rayed they counted hundreds of hairline fractures in my calves and feet, and they asked what that was. I said I didn't know how many times I've been kicked or stepped on by cows, horses and sheep during my teen years.

    I think the cows were pooping so much because they were stressed, which can happen if you don't milk them regularly because that can be painful for them in many cases, and it definitely doesn't feel good to have milk in there without any relief. I would say find a schedule, preferably one time in the morning and one time at night to milk these girls. That'll help them feel better and cooperate better, and they'll be happier. Our experience with our little Dexters, if they are milked at the same time everyday (I choose 6am), they will be standing at the gate. All you do is open it up and let them in. We share with the calves, separating them at 6pm, so only have to milk once per day, although getting calves separated is possibly more work than actual milking. .

    • @purpletoad352
      @purpletoad352 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is very similar to how we manage our 2 jerseys. The easiest way to separate is to get the cows to come to a small treat (grain, alfalfa, etc) when called. We use a bell. While the cows are eating, I feed the calves in the barn where they will be closed up for the night. Within a couple days, the cows will come running, bringing the calves right to the barn door for you. From there it is relatively easy to herd the calves to creep feed.

I think that the last ones may have pooped like once each in the milking stall, ever. I don't really know why, because they don't potty train very well. It may be that they are used to being in the milking stall, because they get milked everyday. I pull the calves and bottle feed them. I actually wonder if maybe she was in heat? I just bought a Brown Swiss two weeks ago who I haven't had an opportunity to milk yet but we are planning on getting a machine within the next month and I am so excited! If I may make a suggestion. Set your milker reservoir towards the cows front and rotate your milker so that the hose is coming up her middle to prevent her from kicking the milker off and it moves the reservoir away from her back end. With the clear milker I assume it plastic but those can still crack and break if they get kicked off a few times, the river mats you have dose help prevent that when it dose happen.

      Haha my S.O and I are in the process of building a homestead, and I am lactose intolerant and don’t like the taste of milk.
      My S.O said “you know that one cow you’re gonna breed every year for meat? Why don’t we just milk her a bit too?”
      And I was like... “That’s why we have milk goats?? I’m not touching that cows udder with a 10 foot pole.”
      So, good news, after watching this video, he is leaving the milk to the goats.

I have the original claw though, yours looks newer...maybe it’s different. The jetter washer system does work great for sanitizing and cleaning. Thanks for sharing!

I use horse web halters they work well. =) Thanks for sharing your experiences!

    Nice parlor! I’d be embarrassed to show mine here. Safe but nowhere near as nice as yours. Love the sinks right there!
    The cows tend to be super loose in spring and early summer when the grass is coming on fast here; always the messiest time of year. May be different in Wyoming.
    We always used plugs and then would pinch the tube hoses while attaching so no air (and germs) would get sucked in between unplugging and getting on the teat. Your parlor looks so clean so perhaps not as much of a concern for you.

    The P##p is the main reason that we put down straw and saw dust on the floors of the barn at the dairy that I worked at from 12 to 16 years old, a bit easier to clean up. By the way, I was almost 'hit' by that stream when a cow coughed and I was walking behind 'that'. And by the way, it doesn't rain but it pours.

    Just wanted to say how much I love learning from you but how WONDERFUL that positive uplifting attitude is when things go bad... Now I have to admit, I could not watch this whole thing... YUCK but I skipped through the middle... BRAVO... BRAVO to your little lady for knowing how to get breakfast done... Question: Would not setting that milker on top of the table until you were ready to put it on, stopped all the extra work? Seems like a lot of extra TLC, which I know needs done, to get this done right... Being out of harm's way, might have made this go smoother... I think I'll skip cows on my little farm especially since I drink fat free milk...

My cow lost her calf and I’ve been milking 2x a day for a couple of months…lately I have been having trouble with my pump losing suction and I can’t get the inflations to latch on! Please be careful with the iodine treatments, it can dry out the soft skin of the utters. I'd suggest getting an edible lotion for them, if you don't already.
    Hoof trimmers use it to suck the moisture out of compromised hooves to make a protective shell. So it is some pretty crazy stuff.
    Also please get a grate or something to cover the wells behind the milking stations. Cows tend to mess up their hooves when they have to twist, turn, and blindly step into dips. It is a leading cause is whiteline and many other issues.
    Anyways, twas a nice video aside all that. I hope you all enjoyed the soccer game.

    We get pooped on at face level. My cousin's milk in a pipeline parlor, so we stand in a pit. If they don't slap you in the face with a wet, crappy tail, they will poop or pee right when you are putting the cups on. Lol. It's just a milkers life. At least you're using a tie stall, and can avoid the messy part a little easier. 🐄🐄🐄 Ever notice the cows only try to use and abuse you when you're in a hurry, and have something to do??? Lol.

    ❤️ this brings back so many memories! 😂 that may sound like I’m in my 70’s but I’m not, I’m in my 20’s. I grew up on a small dairy we milked around 30 cows 10 at a time. Usually if things were pretty quiet we could get through a peaceful milking, but if something were to be out of the ordinary or if one cow were a little fussy they would all start pooping at once. 😂 I still romanticize having just one cow one day. 😂 My family milked cows till after the 2008 election when it became no longer profitable and ours and 4 others in our area had to close. Pretty sad.

    Thank you so much for such an informative video. I am looking at a 4 year old jersey cow now, she is in milk and has a calf on her BUT she was not bred back and it's been 6 months since she had her calf, I have heard that since around 5 months they are in peak production that it may be challenging to get her bred. My questions are #1 should I or CAN I dry her off before trying to get her bred? Or maybe just stop milking and leave the calf on her so maybe her production slows and she can cycle again? Also, after she is successfully bred does she come back into milk during her pregnancy? Or does she have to calve again in order for milk production to start back up? Thank you so much for your time!

    • @jg5755
      @jg5755 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as she's in good condition I'd get her bred as soon as possible but she must have a 2 month break where she is dried off before she has her next calf so she can start producing colostrum. She will likely continue to make a reasonable amount of milk until then, especially if you wean her calf (which will be noisy). Jerseys are persistent milkers. As long as she isn't either too skinny or too fat she should breed back just fine.
