    Nice simplistic video.
    All is true, and I also have REVOLUT, MONESE, N26 and VIVID as well as WISE.
    Why do I have so many ????? Because basically I do not trust any Bank or similar institution not to suddenly awake one day and on the whim of some 'idiot afraid of his own shadow' block my account/monies, so in this way I can spread my monies around all of them.
    I am a Brit, who works in the Middle East (now more than 35 years) and has an EU wife and therefore a residence in Europe.
    I also work in partnership with an Italian company in the UK and in the Gulf.
    So now one might understand why I need to spread things around a little bit.

    I love the idea of Wise. I went ahead and got the card. But upon a Saturday arrival to my Italy destination (im from the USA) I need about $2,800 euros. This does not seem to be the way to do that - but what is? Revolut has a higher limit - but its still not enough.

    • @Monitodotcom
      @Monitodotcom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that's a tough one as $2,800 is a large amount of money to withdraw.
      Perhaps there is a US checking account with better limits? For example: www.capitalone.com/bank/checking-accounts/online-checking-account/ - Could you open a 360 CapitalOne account and deposit say $3,000 into it? According to this (www.capitalone.com/help-center/checking-savings/international-atm-fees/) there are no fees for 360 so that would technically be fee-free when withdrawing abroad. I also think you can withdraw up to $5,000 per day. Hope this will help. ^Jonny

    Hi, I currently have a Wise card and am travelling around Asia. Would you suggest opening different currency accounts for each county I’ll be visiting and add money from my British bank to Wise as I travel through different countries or do I load just GBP to Wise (0 fee) and use my card and let Wise do the conversion in real time? Many thanks

    • @Monitodotcom
      @Monitodotcom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Alan, So I would advise you to open up different currencies and covert money from your GBP account to the currency that's needed. As the local ATM's and shops could use their own process to convert and it costs a lot more. Also if you're trying to use an ATM and it offers you a conversion then please refuse as Wise will do it for you automatically and won't charge you any extra fees. Hope that helps and enjoy your travels, I'm very jealous! ^Jonny

    Is there a difference in overall fees between using the auto conversion feature and just holding your home currency in the Wise wallet? or is it better to hold the foreign currency before spending it in that foreign country. I am Australian and travelling to Scandinavia and with all the different currencies it will be a pain doing the conversions for estimated spending before I use the card and then being stuck with the stray balances after I leave. I know these can be converted back but this also carries more fees. If I withdraw from an ATM I will convert first to get the best cash tate but for normal electronic transactions should I just hold AUD in my Wise wallet? Thanks

    • @Monitodotcom
      @Monitodotcom  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Jeffrey, sorry for the slow response I've been away on holiday. So I reached out to Wise to check with them directly and they said that because the fees between auto convert and exchanging prior are so negligible, you may as well just use auto conversion.
      Yes exactly, just deposit AUD into your Wise account and use your card to spend while you're in Europe. You'll receive the mid-market rate and pay a very, very small fee.

    We are travelling to UK, France, Austria and Italy in March 2023 from Australia, is this the best option for holding some GBP, some Euro? Is the process to open the Wise account, add Australian dollars then move portions of that into GBP and Euro accounts, or can we only deposit directly to the different currencies from external sources? A step by step would be helpful. Also, will we be able to transfer the balance of the GBP into the Euro account when we leave England? Thanks

You can transfer back and fourth very easily although you will pay a tiny fee each time. Have you checked out Revolut? ^Jonny

I’m in the United States and it says that there is supposed to be a six digit code on the card but there is no six digit code to be found. There’s nothing on their website, their customer support seems to be really slow, and I can’t seem to find any information on the Internet. All the information I find is a few years old and it shows the card number and name on the front of the card but mine has all the information on the back of the card and no activation code. Unfortunately I thought that I activated the card so I seemed to have thrown away that piece of paper that it came with. I’m just wondering if anyone has any idea how to activate the card in the United States without the activation code.

      Hey FOD, it would be a good card - especially if you don't intend to withdraw over £200 per month. However, as you're from the UK may I suggest checking out Starling Bank. You could easily register for their personal account and use that card while you're abroad. There are no fees on international transactions and ATM withdrawals and you'll receive Mastercard's exchange rates which are more or less the same as Wise.

    Does it matter where the card was issued? As in, is there an advantage for the local currency for the country where it was issued?
    As an example, lets say there are 2 cards, 1 issued in the USA and the other one in the UK. Well the USA card have an advantage over the UK card on USA soil? And vice versa.
    Also , lets say you're buying on amazon or any online site. And you're paying in USD $. Will the USA-issued card have an advantage because you're paying in USD $? and vice versa.
    I hope you understand what im trying to say.
    And thanks.

    • @Monitodotcom
      @Monitodotcom  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Totally understood. No there wouldn’t be an advantage, regardless of where your card was issued - what will matter is the currencies that are deposited into the account.
      For example, if USD is held in your account and you purchase a product in USD (like Amazon US, as you mentioned) then you wouldn’t incur the very small exchange fee.
      If you don’t hold the currency of products you purchase then you’ll incur very small fees, but because Wise use the real, mid-market rate, even with these fees still the card is practically better than any other. Thanks and let me know if you have any more Q’s. ^Jonny

    • @Monitodotcom
      @Monitodotcom  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Junnie! So you could either exchange the money before you go or just top up with USD and hold it in the account. The card will automatically deduct from that account when you spend money.
      I've done both in the past and I find it's actually cheaper to exchange the money in advance and it can be quite a good budgeting tool as well.
      Have a think about how much money you want to spend in both countries, and exchange the USD before you go. Of course while you're there if you do run out of either currency then you can still use the card and Wise will deduct from your USD balance. If you do that though, MAKE SURE to decline the currency conversion at the ATM or card machine so Wise take care of the currency exchange.
      Hope this helps Junnie and safe travels :) ^Jonny

      @@Monitodotcom I'm in canada. The foriegn exchange fee at canadian banks is generally 2.5 percent, and the exchange rates that they offer are not very good as far as I have researched. • @Monitodotcom
      @Monitodotcom  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Dom, thanks for the detailed response. I had a quick look over what Canada had to offer and you're right there really isn't much that's worth it! Unfortunately, Revolut isn't available in Canada, leaving Wise the only real choice.
      That's not a bad thing though as when it comes to converting CAD > MXN in 10s of thousands - they're very competitive. www.monito.com/en/compare/transfer/ca/mx/cad/mxn/10000
      As you mentioned buying a house, I'm going to assume these will be big withdrawals. With Wise, your maximum withdrawal amount is 7000 CAD (monthly) and you'll be able to withdraw 350 CAD fee-free after which you will be charged 1.75%. This means you'll pay a rough total fee of 117.50 CAD (1.75% of 6650 CAD + 1.50 CAD fixed fee) when withdrawing 7000 CAD.
      Now if you can stomach that then Wise isn't a bad option. The question is, can you find somewhere cheaper to exchange the money or order the currency in Canada?

      Hey Elena! Very interesting question. As you would be in Turkey the transaction would be in liras, I imagine they present the prices in euros because that's a currency more internationally recognised.
      Your card will absolutely work though, even if it's loaded up with euros and the vendor charges you in lira. Definitely choose the local currency (liras) also when you go to pay and let Wise convert the money for you and not the vendor/payment provider as they'll likely give you a poor exchange rate. ^Jonny

I could be wrong though, but that's usually what happens.

      Sorry I thought you meant opening an entirely new Wise account. Basically if you visit your Wise portal and scroll across on the accounts carousel you should see an ‘Open’ button. Click that and find AUD. That will make the AUD account available, you can then convert your EUR to AUD and deposit into there.

      Hey Paul. Kamusta? The money you wish to spend in the Philippines could be held in your UK Wise account, although each time you make a transaction you will incur a very small fee for exchanging GBP to PHP. Surely you could still transfer money from the UK to the Philippines, even while living there. If it's money deposited into a UK bank account of yours then just transfer it to your UK Wise account?
      May I ask how long you will be living in the Philippines? ^Jonny

    Hi Jonny, I am traveling from Netherlands to UK. I plan to withdraw £200 one or two times which card would you recommend me ? Thank you

    • @Monitodotcom
      @Monitodotcom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Marina. That’s a good question! Both Revolut’s Standard account and Wise have a limit of £200/month. After that Revolut charge 2% and Wise 1.75%. Based on that Wise would be the better choice as once you exceed £200 and then say withdraw a further £200, you’d be charged £3.50 by W and £4 by Revolut.
      Revolut Premium comes with a greater fee-free monthly ATM withdrawal amount but I don’t think it’s worthwhile if it’s just for 1 month.
      I suggest in this case you grab the Wise card. Deposit euros into the account, ideally via bank transfer (cheapest method) and then exchange the euros to sterling in-app before you travel. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any more questions. ^Jonny

      Well you could face ATM FIXED fees at an airport, to avoid those look to withdraw money from a VISA ATM - www.visa.com/atmlocator/mobile/index.jsp

      Hey S! This is absolutely suitable and likely the best option! Best bet would be to invoice your clients with your Wise US account details and then once you receive the money exchange it with Wise to NZD, then transfer it to your NZ bank account. The only fee you'll pay will be exchanging the USD to NZD which with Wise should be very small. Let me know if you need any more help. ^Jonny
