Julia, I'm not a bass player, not a guitar player, not a musician, not a german-speaking person... but you're so a nice woman ! so a nice musician, so a nice person. Thank you very much for all your videos !
Interesting. I heard of foam, and gloves, but never Grandma's knitted socks as mutes. No mention of that in the Fender literature either. ;-) Awesome job as usual Julia.
Belfalor, make sure your string heights are even as well. Turn your bass sideways as if it is in playing position. Then measure the distance between the bottom of each strings and the 12th fret. Standard Fender specs are 6/64ths of an inch. Most players prefer 4.5 to 5/64ths. 2mm or thereabouts should get you in the ballpark. Just make sure that the height is the same for all of the strings. That is the key part here. If your string heights are uneven then trying to play with your thumb can be borderline impossible.
Simply awesome! I've now watched all the Q&A and have to say they are so inspiring to play more bass, and more often. The bass is a journey and not a destination, thump on :)
You have great knowledge of the bass, awesome, I know that edge of that Bootsy Collins bass guitar be cutting the fool out your leg! I would LOVE to learn to play bass
Hey Julia always a pleasure .. FYI Bootsie also wore some very uncomfortable looking ' Boot's ' & outfits But once seen never forgotten .. LOL Stay safe especially over the Holidays season .
I have the same problem with slapping, easy peasy on the E string but much harder on the others. I've tried many things, I just can't get it on a consistent way. Love your vidéos, and you're such and amazing bass player, if one day I play half as good as you I'll be happy !
I just got my first bass ever, I'm 61. Yeah I know. Played guitar since I was 16 but was recently listening to one of my favorite albums, Sting, " Brand new day " And for some reason the bass was jumping out at me, and everything I listened to after that , the same thing. Got given a bass three days latter. 80's Aria pro 2. Haven't put it down and have blisters on two fingers and a thumb. Gave my Telecaster to my son. He's happy too. Love your playing and vids. Ka kite ano, Maaka.
Okay. This was great. I mean REALLY great. You hit a lot of points for me (and hopefully others as well) in this video: First, I'm grateful for this Q&A video. It matters to aspiring bass players like myself. It's the fuel we need after everyday-life tries to beat the desire to be a better bass player out of me. So, please keep them coming. Next, from the moment I saw Bootsy's bass I thought it didn't look terribly comfortable. But Bootsy played it and then I simply didn't think about it much anymore. lol What you wrote about your different approaches to playing music matter SO MUCH! I'm someone not at all formally trained in music, but have loved the instrument for as far back as I can remember. Thankfully, I now have the time to invest in learning a bit more about music theory (specifically for bass players now that there's so much more education available out there!), and it's opening up things for me. That said, Your mentioning learning the song by ear made me feel SOOOOO much better. That's not an excuse for me to stop learning theory. Hardly! As I said, theory's opening things up for me. Besides, I'd like to know what the other musicians are talking about (lol). Back to the point, hearing what you said put me at ease for trying to learn songs by heart. And I also remember them longer that way. Lastly, the comment about your grandmas socks... Outstanding. Bonus points for letting us into that part of your life. That was stellar, and I'm grateful for it. Keep it up! I think you're doing such a great job. :)
Abella, since bass players are always in short supply, you have a better chance of ending up playing the music you like, and maybe even making some spare pocket change. Practice and get good!
Awesome, Julia! Thanks for answering my question. By the way, I've heard of Grandma's hands (by Bill Withers), but never Grandma's socks. Perhaps you should write the song!
Julia, Thank You 🙏 so much for ur advice and support, I’ve used to thump and slap like Lous Johnson! But I’ve had a Stroke!!😢😢 in 95’; but I can thump and slap 👋 some.. Any ideas for exercise??? I’m playing a 5 string Bongo Music man Sting Ray Music man, Steinberger stynapes 4 string
Dear Julia please do more of these... I have a question, do old bass strings get harder as they age? the strings on my bass are at least 20 years old...
I don't want to be annoying but I do not recommend any product of Huawei (and related as Xiaomi) because we know how China does not care about privacy. Anyway, I love your playing, is so smooth😊
I purchased a bass one year ago, because "slap bass" seemed interesting. Unfortunately, it is a cheap Fender Squier, which suffers from headstock diving. I kind of lost motivation for the bass guitar & found electric guitar better. Nice video by the way :]
I can confirm! I have this Bootsy Collins bass and it is the most unwieldy thing that I have ever owned. The SOUND is great! But, I rarely play it for more than one song....
@Julia I've noticed your fondness for old classic rock and pop songs. I started my musical journey as a kid buying heavy metal albums like back in black(ac/dc) and turbo lover(judas priest). In later years i discovered the British band "FREE". I can clearly remember how i felt hearing Andy Fraser's bass when watching th-cam.com/video/uyle6hZLxRc/w-d-xo.html WOW! That was something completely new to me. The bass style from Andy Fraser is in my mind very unique and well worthy it's own video comment from you. Andy Fraser's top five?
Hi Julia! Do you consider compression an essential part of shaping the sound? Do you use a compression effect during live gigs, or mainly on studio recordings?
Regarding stab protection - as with training wheels on a bike - for playing the Bootsy bass you need to childproof the pointy bits with corner guards before you reach that funk god like level of playing and then and only then you can take them off. Thankfully Julia already had the chops.
@@ThomannsGuitarsBasses Thank you for your response, your English is pretty awesome! Before I moved back to Canada I was involved in the music scene in Carinthia. Recording background vocals (Tonstudio Bernthaler) and editing lyrics for the band Naked Lunch. Good times. I enjoy your videos very much, watching your joy and enthusiasm. Stay safe!
@@ThomannsGuitarsBasses Hahhh, I just knew you were a Carinthian girl, it shows, definitely not Viennese ;-) I'm getting my first bass next week, thanks for the enthusiasm and showing that the bass is accessible.
amazing videos as always the thing i don't understand are the 2 not likes are they crazy or what your videos are always informative and really enjoyable. 2 more thumbs up too make up for the 2 dislikes
What you put into it is what you'll get out of it. That's the truth that was , is and always will be. If you want to be decent, you owe that bass about 500 hours of playing time. The great ones on the other hand are in the hundreds of thousands of hours put in to their instrument. The legends ... if you notice in pictures are never very far away from their instrument
I tried to learn Hells Bells the whole Song from a Tab. It is impossible for me to memorize all the Riff Changes and the Number of Repetitions. The Riff changes in every part of the Song. It has an Intro, Pre verse, Verse1, Bridge, Pre-Chorus, Verse 2 which is different than 1, Guitar Solo and the Ending. That´s where the Fun gets lost for me so i played easier Songs like Stuff from the Hives or Joy Division. For Hells Bells i have to figure out a different Approach. Like Julia said. I better should try to learn it by Ear. I train my Ears that Way as well.

Uncomfortable Bass Ever ??? Try a Warwick Darklord. It’s a Vampyre shape and weighs a ton. And while sitting the horns get deep in your thigh.

That star bass reminds of Björn Ulvaeus's star guitar from 1974.
Have you ever heard of Umbo Umschaden? Bassist from St. Veit/Glan, plays in Germany, studied in California.
